All Production And No Soul
11 January 2024
STOP what you're doing, and go watch the original French Canadian (2003 & 2013) instead. This remake right here has absolutely nothing to offer, y eso que yo soy Latina.

Ok it's not that bad, right, only because the ORIGINAL is very good. This version is a dumbed down version. Superficial acting, the set looked like AI rendering I'm not kidding, the dialogue was simplified to the extreme. Everything felt off, and that's because it doesn't have spirit, it is just a movie made to fill the Netflix daily quota of "new" content- meaningless, insubstantial content at that.

The 2013 movie with Brendan Gleeson felt more real because they filmed in a real island, with real homes. The story was more credible, it didn't look like a fever dream fairytale.

Lame, Contrived Plot With Zero Believable Dynamic Between The Leads
10 January 2024
My oh my. Well, it had potential, at least.

Mild spoilers ahead.

I think that it was a bad call to let people know from the beginning that we're on earth, because as soon as the reveal happens there is not one single interesting thing left in the movie.

It's honestly baffling why they casted a 16 year old to make the parts of a supposedly 9 year old child, she has a teenager face so it's not "adorable vulnerable child" anymore, it's weird, because he was supposed to be her father figure and viceversa, and even though Adam Driver has the age to be the father of a 16 year old (real age of the actress), he looks like he's in his 30s so it didn't add up at all. The connection they're supposed to have, nope, no chemistry, not viable in terms of the story.

The plot points that supposedly delayed their plan and made them "race even more against time" were contrived and stupid. The kid whining for nothing not one, but TWO times. Just lazy writing.

Repetitive Material is Getting Old and Uninspired
8 January 2024
It managed to get a few chuckles from me, and I honestly agree with the subject matter, but Ricky really needs to take a break and think of new material and new angles to what he's already saying.

This was like SuperNature but with different words and much less incisive. Although I have to admit, as soon as I saw this one nominated for the Golden Globes I knew it had to be tamed material so not much of a surprise there.

What he said in the end is true "if you speak out, you can change any outcome" you just have to speak out for whatever it is you genuinely believe to be true. After the 2020 Golden Globes he won my respect for telling the truth, I just hope he always keeps his work fresh and genuine.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)

Loud, Overscored and Soulless
8 January 2024
It's a shame this film was criminally overscored, it threw me off almost every scene because the music was so overpowering, especially when you DON'T need it if you have great acting.

The music in the first act was too cheeky and inspirational. When Oppenheimer was recruiting the scientists it honestly felt like the Avengers were assembling.

Big, loud and expensive is not a synonym of good storytelling either, particularly when they deviate the focus from the very disturbing weapon they're creating and decide to dwell on the defamation case against Mr. Oppenheimer. More than 200,000 people lost their lives instantly, I think it's safe to assume that having Strauss holding a grudge against Oppenheimer as the central point is very disappointing and superficial.

Cinematically, all throughout the movie it seemed like everything was SO GRAND, everything was the next big thing. WE know the Avengers scientist team are going to invent the holy grail of destruction, THEY don't know that, so why act like they're changing history already.

Ultimately, it's not a bad film but I resent the fact that the subject matter was not treated with the seriousness it deserves. The film almost feels like a light hearted feel good movie about a nuclear BOMB.

A Tale of Friendship, Respect and Hard Work
16 July 2023
I was absolutely delighted and enchanted by the simple, peaceful, uneventful and beautiful everyday life of these characters. Sure, nothing big happens, and isn't life that way for a regular citizen in any part of the world? Nonetheless, our boy did learn quite a few life lessons- *SPOILERS* by the end of day he was respecting the elders and committed to studying and working on his free days in the workshop.

Whenever we think of Africa, it is rare to think about stories that do not involve wars, poverty and tragedies; not to say that it doesn't happen, but Africa is much more than that: a continent with 54 countries inhabited by people filled with life and emotions, people who have everyday jobs, enjoy barbecues, stream Netflix and somewhere in there, in some place in Nigeria, there's a bunch of mechanics talking passionately about The Premier League.

I was blessed with the experience of watching this tale of love, friendship, camaraderie and hard work.
