American Made (2017)

Feels incomplete, but fun.

The first half is enjoyable ride. Tom Cruise carries this movie. The movie falters in the last half hour. Direction is choppy and patched together. Editing is all over the place. The story falters towards the end, almost as if the director didn't know how to end it well. Could've been better if they had dived deeper into the the actual story of Barry Seal and the Cartel/CIA connection.

NIce ambiance, nice characters, dodgy ending.

I loved the natural scenery, the people and the main characters. They seem so natural and authentic, it makes you feel you are in there and are washed through and through by the ambiance of the sacred mountains. The dramatic tension between the families of the lead characters feels a little under-cooked, and end sequences with the flood leaves much to be desired, both with regards to vfx as well and dramatic tension. However I loved the first half of the movie. The actors did well. The cinematography was gorgeous. With a better story, this one could have been gold. Nevertheless I was not disappointed.

Well directed, well acted period piece
4 June 2020
It's an intriguing second world war story about a medic who saves the lives of many soldiers without even firing a single bullet. Saturated with Christian themes of goodness and morality, it's an emotionally evocative take on the battle of Okinawa, the last Japanese stronghold before the fall of Japan. Director Mel Gibson succeeds in framing dynamic battle sequences at a rapid pace that keeps you glued to the screen, with slow-mo effects sprinkled over, not carelessly for the sake of style, but eloquently to elucidate pivotal moments in the thick of the battle.

When I first heard the premise, I thought it was gimmicky, but knowing it was based on a true story, my perspective was shifted profoundly. It's a movie the succeeds in shedding light on the best of humanity at the worst of times. With deft handling by the veteran director with fan heart-wrenching performance by the lead Andrew Garfield, this is truly a well-made movie.

A calm and meditative look at the suburban life
3 June 2020
This movie tells the story of a white suburban housewife dissatisfied with her life and looking for a way to escape the monotony. She finds her calling when she gets a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and realizes she has a natural talent for it. The spark, however, ignites more than just her passion for the game; It restructures her entire world. By the end of the movie she ends up being someone else entirely, almost like a butterfly breaking out of its cucoon and flying away. The cucoon is her husband and the structure of control that he subjects upon her.

It's a good movie flavored by the engaging performances by the lead actors Kelly MacDonald and Irrfan Khan. It further benefits from a balanced screenplay that manages to inject humor in places where you would least expect it. It also reflects on life and meaning of choices, which makes you think and that is what sticks with you long after the credits roll. Though the ending is almost predictable (almost!), it leaves you satisfied for having watched a well-made movie.

Interesting plot, well acted
31 May 2020
It has an interesting plot that does away with the typical time travel trope and keeps the sci-fi element to a minimum. Instead it focuses on its well structured and fleshed-out plot which is more unpredictable than predictable. The acting by the lead characters is superb. The story hooks you till the end. I am glad I came across this movie and didn't mind watching it with subtitles.
