Without spoiling anything, I will say the first 1/3 of the movie was fantastic. (I can't help but notice how similar it appears to Gosling's other performance in 'Drive' with the super talented stunt driver turning to a trashy mechanic and a life of crime in order to take care of a girl and her son. ) The tension and characters really had me interested and Luke's character was beautifully created.
Then we get to the second half of the movie and the entire thing fell flat. I felt like my movie was interrupted by a commercial break. You slowly gain sympathy for the characters and situation but everything is much more drawn out and not completely necessary.
Moving towards the end of the movie, we start to pick up some momentum and the plot becomes interesting again but the ending scene falls flat to me and I wish there was a bit more spark.
I really feel like Gosling's performance carried this movie, but hats off to production and Cianfrance for taking some creative risks with this story. I definitely was not expecting the major plot twist but I think things went downhill after that. Even with that, there is still heart, especially if you have your mind on family.
Not a movie i'll probably watch again, but one I will be thinking about for awhile.
