Color Out of Space (2019)
Fairly good adaption
Yes, I liked it. Not the best "lovecraftian" movie or "cosmic horror" movie. Whuch may sound weird, since it is just that - an adaption of a Lovecraft story.
But out of the cosmic horror movies that is based on a Lovecraft movie, this is definitly one of the better.
Nicolas Cage steals the show. When he drop the guard on his otherwise over-the-top acting, we get something interesting. We get a family man who is doing the best to keep his family together and safe, while he slowly descends into madness. And it works fine.
The story works, even though I understand some of the critics when they say the story doesnt do HP Lovecraft justice. But it is nonetheless a pretty good horror movie.
There are of course a few marks on the bad side. Some of the effects feels a bit sloppy. Somewhere between a descent budget movie and a well made TV movie. The scene in which he kills the mishmash-alpacka-monster made me flat out cringe. It was suppose to be intense, with an awful looking monster getting killed in a river of blood and Nicolas Cage screaming and waving his gun (allmost, but not really, overacting). I could almost hear him think "what am I doing, this is so stupid".
Some of the dialougs could have been better written, sometimes it feels a bit stiff. But the actors are making the best out of what they got, so I'm still impressed.
Overall some pretty good scares, some good atmospheres, some good visual scenes, overall an entertaining popcorn movie.
Vivarium (2019)
Fascinating
I really really wanted to like this movie. There's a fascinating idea, a descent budget, a couple of well known actors. The production feels and look crisp.
The frame story is as follows. A young couple is looking for a home, a house, to spend their lives in. I'm not sure how, but they end up at a brokerage firm, run by this absolutely bizarre character. The guy is not creepy, sleazy or vile in any way. On the contrary, he is so over professional, he becomes a.caricature of every broker you've ever met. A genuin oddball.
Together, they visit this seemingly new built neighborhood named Yonder. Row after row of houses, that looks exactly the same. Every. House. Is. Identical. Period. Every house look like they are on display rather than being for sale. Even the paintings in the houses depicts - the room the painting happen to exist in.
The thing is, this could have been an excellent satire on the world we live in; a mass produces society, where everything looks the same but is empty on soul. I've heard others complain about the lack of ideas and substance, how this would have been better of as a short film. That's the main flaw of the film. In the end, it's an okay film. But it could have been better. Watch it if you like, I aint gonna "warn" you. The movie is ... okay. But dont expect a masterpiece.
Fear Clinic (2014)
Enjoyable, but forgetable
I bought this at Ginza, one of the bigger web-based discshops in Sweden. I found it in the outlet-section, I think it cost me 10 kronor (about an American dollar). It was worth every krona, hehe.
Robert Englund is good, as in most his films. It sets the mood quite early. Then it pases of a bit, before taking some dark turns. Unfortunately, the good parts are few and far between. It feels like they had a great idea, but didnt followed through. They had the budget, so the overall feeling is crisp, but that's about it.
This is more the kind of film you put on if you got a date and dont want anything too complicated to watch. You can have it on in the background. Hopefully your date will jump in your lap a couple of times.
Dont know what to say more. It's an okay little flick, not more than that.
American Graffiti (1973)
An American classic that became a part of Swedish heritage
There is a part of the Swedish culture that is commonly known as the "raggare" culture. I suppose the closest translation to English would be "greasers". This subculture consists of car born rockers in general, and a romantic image of the American fifties in particular. Classic American cars and rockabilly (and in some extent country music) is the center of this culture. There are variations, though not worth mention here.
As a part of the common "raggare" heritage, there are a few highlights or trademarks. The music of Elvis, the face of Marilyn Monroe and the movies of James Dean, are some of them.
When it comes to movies, this is one of the biggest classics. The cars, the soundtrack and the atmosphere. Everything is the way we want things to be. Love it.
47 Meters Down (2017)
Pretty good - intense! claustrophobic!
I just watched the Movie, and was surprised to read the faltering Reviews on this one. At its best, it got sixes and sevens out of ten, while other considered it flat out bad.
However, I really liked it! If you expect a masterpiece in the line of "Citizen Kane" and "Godfather", dont waste your time. If you are in for a good thrill and fun with a film down the line of such flicks as "Snakes on a plane", you've got 90 minutes of a good ride to look forward to.
The special effects are pretty good, despite what people say. Of course you can tell that some of the Sharks aren't real. Of course great whites are usually not that aggressive. We know, but that's not the point.
The acting is a bit so-so, but at least the main actresses makes us believe in the panic. Some scenes are claustrophobic. Other scenes gave me a dizziness close to when you stand in front of the edge of a height.
A few jump scare effects, which is legitimate in this kind of film.
All and all, a pretty good movie.
Jönssonligan - Den perfekta stöten (2015)
Not as bad as everyone says, though darker and less of a comedy
I've seen some pretty mixed reviews on this one, some of them good, but some of them unjustly negative.
Here's why.
I think most negative comments on this films are based in the fact that the classic lineup of our favorite criminal gang consists of Björn Gustafsson as Dynamite Harry, Gösta Ekman as Charles Ingvar and Ulf Brunberg as Ragnar 'Vanheden' from the 80s and 90s. That's the way we want to remember them. As the times are, we live in a time of sequels, prequels and reboots. That's just the currents on the Movie market. Deal with it. This movie was made, it was filmed and released. That's the way it is. The movie exists. Accept it.
The fact that they once decided to make a reboot on "Jönssons gang" franchise made most of the fans skeptical, including me. How could they ever capture that old feeling of those ingenious heist stories and slapstic relief? By making something totally new, of course!
First thing first, Everything we remember from the original franchise has made its transition into the 2100 Century. Modern technology, modern cars, more contemporary gadgets, Vanheden is more of a "brat" than a "player". Times change, so does the circumstances around which the movie's story takes place.
Second, the characters back stories feel more trustworthy, or at least deeper. In the early movies, Harry just happened to be a guy who enjoyed blow things up an have an occassional beer afterward. Here he is an ex miner who drinks because he's depressed. In the early movies, Charles Ingvar is just a grumpy old goof. Here he can be bitter, sometimes flat out grim, mostly due to the murder of his uncle and the loss of his ex.
Third, and this is the overall and most important element of how to turn the old classics into a new type of success; this movie is to be considered more as a thriller or a crime story than a flat out Comedy. Of course, there are some pretty funny scenes, but the overall tone is way darked than we remember from the classic franchise. Don't be fooled now, this is not a Bergman movie or "Silence of the Lambs" type of story. Only, darker compared to the old slapstick franchise.
There are plenty of scenes that makes you think of classic action Movies such as "Oceans 11", the James Bond Movies, "Gone in sixty seconds" and others.
Don't know what more to say. I liked it. It had some funny moments, a lot of thrill. It really made its way into the 2100 Century. Looking forward to a sequel, Believe it or not!
