The Quiet (2005)
A quietly, powerful film
When i first looked at the title on this film , it interested me. With a title like "The Quiet" it had to be about something dark. I watched the film and was left feeling...well quiet. I was struck by it. Having nobody watched it but me, i had no one to explain to what had just happened. I think it was the simplicity of the story, and how it turned into something very complicated. a deaf, mute girl(dot) realizes she cant hide from the world, because the world is there, in all its dark, sick and mysterious beauty. The main plot device, which happens to be something not normally dealt with in many films that young people are willing to see, is incest. Not stupid things like mainstream movies about people trying to get laid. Incest, direct and in your face. It was oddly enough, Pauls character that made me think the most, what had happen to this man to make him need his daughter that much?
Walking and Talking (1996)
everybody can relate to this really cool flick
Amelia has what everyone thinks they need, a job, a apartment, a cat, a best friend, a date (even though hes ugly) and she is even close friends with her ex. But then, things start slid to fast from under her feet, her cat gets cancer, her best friend, Laura, is getting married, and Bill(her ugly date), hasn't talked to her in two weeks.. All this time, she keeps up the appearance, while helping Laura pick out a place for the wedding, giving Andrew advice about his relationship with a girl in California, treating her cats cancer, and trying to win over Bill. this is one of those films that everyone (apart from small children) can have something in common. whether they have commitment issues, as Laura has with Frank , or you still like your ex, like Andrew does Amelia, or you feel like the third wheel, just like Amelia does with Laura, or you feel very distant from your partner, as Frank does with Laura. we all connect one of these characters to ourselves or someone we know. Everyone feels like Frank sometimes, walking on eggshells, not having any say in anything anymore. Everyone feels like Laura sometimes, like everything is going to fast, and you want to go back and enjoy life as it was before. Everyone feels like Andrew sometimes, we get so close to getting back with an ex, and being rejected nicely. And Everyone feels like Amelia sometimes, when nothing is going is your way, and nobody is listening.
The Omen (1976)
a story behind the story
For all those who wish to know more about the birth of Damien: Everything was ready, timed to perfection, the child would be born of the 6th of June at 6am. They knew Thorn would except the child, he do anything for his wife, to keep her happy and content. all they needed was a man who would kill without mercy, without thinking twice. Brennen, the priest who had come to them so long ago in his time of need, they had given him freedom, and life without sorrow. His time had come to prove himself to the dark lord. Spiletto told him of the message that had been sent from Satan. A child, his only son, would be born of a jackal on the date of 6th of June at 6am. it was their responsibility to put the boy in good hands and keep him there til such a time when he would rise to take what his father would give to him. Thorn's wife, she had wanted a child more then anything, and Thorn knew it. They had had two of their hopes gone, and now she was pregnant again and it had lasted the full nine months. She was ready for a child and would be shattered if this one left her also. B'aalock, a fellow satanist, would take care of the jackal through pregnancy and would present the child to Thorn as they had planned. Baylock, B'aalock's sister. would take care of the child when they felt his powers were starting to show. As for Brennan, he would have the hardest job of all. The killing of The boys mother and Thorn's child. Spiletto was sure he would do it, Brennan had proved that many times. The unholy night finally came and the Jackel's howls were unheard from the basement of the hospital, while Thorn's wife cried out with pain above. They called Thorn half way through the birth, to be sure he would reach them at the right moment. The children were born at the same time, both healthy. Thorn's wife, exhausted form the ordeal, fell into a deep sleep before she knew if he son was alive. she would never see her son again, at least to her knowledge. B'aalock took the child silently from the room and down to the basement, handing it to Brennan. Brennan slowly placed the child of the table beside the jackal, who was resting. Then, taking up a sharp, heavy rock, he struck at the jackal to the head, killing it. Then, one again raising the rock, aimed it at Thorns son. He struck the boy to the head, it cried out then moved no more. Brennan quickly dumped the jackals corpse in a crate, nailing it shut. Then did the same with Thorn's son, he hadn't even be named yet. Above, Thorn was jogging down a corridor to find a lone priest waiting for him, grief in his eyes. The priest told Thorn that his son was dead, his wife well, but had no knowledge of the death. He convinced Thorn, that if he loved his wife, he would take a false as his own. Thorn requested to see the boy. B'aalock was carefully preparing the boy, cleaning him, wrapping him in a blanket, checking under his jet black hair for the birthmark. She left the basement as Brennan moved the crate containing the boy's corpse towards the back door. Suddenly, he heard a cry from inside the crate. Opening it, he saw the child, still alive, crying in pain. He quickly took up the Rock again and hit the child again. After a moment, he quickly closed the crate, breathing heavily. it was over. the child was dead.
The Omen (2006)
my first scare from Omen 06.06.06
it was late in the afternoon of April, i was home alone and i decided to check out what new horror movie trailers were on demand. i went down the page and stopped on "Omen". i had never heard of "Omen" before so i decided to click on it. the camera faded in to a dog, sitting in a kids old playground, the camera zoomed to a little boy, in a red suit, going back and forth on a swing. what got me was the lack of music, yet the squeaking of the swing seemed to be much more creepy. as the camera finally stopped on the boy. i felt as if something should happen, so i waited...and waited...and wai--BAM! the kid suddenly turned his cold staring eyes at the camera, making me jump about a foot in the air. Thats when i knew i had to see this movie.
Pillow Talk (1959)
A Sexy, funny, and plain old good film
If Rock Hudson were still here with us, i sure he would say this was his favorite film he made, who wouldn't love to be involved with this film. who doesn't love this film, even my 19 year old brother(hard core punk) sat down with me to watch it and he loved it.
the story starts out with these two flat mates, Brad and Jan who hate each other before they've even seen each others faces. but when Brad sees Jan for the first time, he wants her and he hits upon a scheme. To get her likings, he pretends to be the gracious, teddy bear like, southern accented, Rex. But of course with any scheme, something is bound to go wrong. they fall in love, and before Brad can have his happy ending, Jan finds out who he really is, the playboy who lives upstairs.
The bedroom humor is that even the most independent, modest, feminist and the most womanizing, sly, playboy can find happiness in each other; leaves you feeling like this stuff happens everyday. the funny thing is...it does and it can happen to you.
Damien: Omen II (1978)
coming of age
although not as good as the original Omen, It's a pretty good job. I imagine it gets pretty hard not to turn the story of an teenage becoming Antichrist into a soap opera.
It basically starts with an 12-13 year old(round about the same age Jesus was when he found out he was the son of god) Damien Thorn alive ab=nd always well. Although he knows that he is a very gifted boy, he has no idea just how important he is. He continues to believe that his father desire to kill him was a result of pure madness from the death of his mother. He attends a military school and is top in everything, but is not in competition with his cousin, Mark, who he is very found of. Mark is in fact the only person who doesn't think of Damien as anything evil. When a new CO(commanding officer)comes to the school, strange accidents start accruing that results in peoples death. Damien soon learns to read his bible and finds out why his father seeked to kill him. Then, after accepting what he is and he is going to do, he starts to recruit and destroy. His biggest ordeal was the death of Mark, Mark had refused to join him. But in the end, again, He remains the only survivor, apart from his Commanding officer, who is revealed to be a messenger of Satan.
Sometimes you think that Damien will defy his father, but like Jesus, he accepts his fate and, unlike Jesus, uses it to his advantage.
The Evil Dead (1981)
Evil dead: one great low-budget ride
The evil dead, one of the great low-budget horror films, proves that everyone can do something in a film, that little too no money shouldn't stop you from achieving your goals, and people who don't have sex in horror films can die.
Ash(Bruce Campbell) is camping out with his friends in an old creepy cabin when they find a tape recorder and a ugly-looking book(book of the dead). the voice on the recorder reads out a spell that brings out the demons of another world. Ash is now made almost the antihero when he becomes the last person alive from the horrible ordeal.
This film wasn't always smooth sailing(as if any low-budget film is), the movie in whole took 5 years to make because of lack of funding. You can see Bruce age from age 21 to age 26, you also see him sustain real injuries and many of the cuts on his face during the film are real. Also many of the actors left the film during filming, so many locals were called to finished the characters role, including Sam Raimi(director) and his brother Ted(who is in almost everyone of his brothers films).
Unlike other horror films, there is no sex,("there's no hanky-panky in this film, kids!"-Bruce Campbell). Which makes the film more professional, But Sam still flashed a girl topless just for laughs. Sam tried to capture what real teenagers would do in a cabin miles from the nearest town, But when Bruce inhaled real marijuana smoke in front of the camera for a scene, he was totally senseless(he'd never done drugs before). But still the totally untrained actors tried there best to do every stunt, every emotion, everything that Sam threw at them for as little pay as $100 a week. One of the hardest scene to shoot was the last. How are we to end this film with a good kick? how about...The "Force" running through the house and into Ash. True non-acting locals were called in to do the sequence of doors, noises and Sam himself was behind the camera. He started at a shot of a leaf on the ground, then started running through the woods, through the back door, through the closed doors of the house, out the front door and straight into Bruce. Although there was a rumor that Sam did the whole scene on a motorbike because of the speed the camera seems to be going. The Evil Dead, a real start for Bruce Campbell and for Sam Raimi(who directed Spiderman+Spiderman 2), a true masterpiece for low-budget film history.
Scream 2 (1997)
a plot outlook *Spoiler*
alright, this movie didn't surpass the first, but it sure put some sequel writers in there place. The movie is constantly saying that when your pushing the tenth movie in a horror series(Jason for example), maybe you should think where you going.
Sidney, now in college, has a new best friend, Boyfriend, and and life all round. Though she is still friends with all the survivors, Randy, Dewey and Gale(well sort of). Then her life is turned, once again, upside-down by the new movie release of "Stab", a movie based on the the novel "The Woodboros Murders" By Gale weathers. During the opening night of the film, a couple is brutally murdered.
Sidney sees the news of the two murders, paranoia starts to take over. Randy, at the same college, tells her not to worry in between arguments with Mickey, a friend, that sequels ruin originals. Gale, to Sidneys shock brings out Cotton Weary(the man originally accused of Sidney's mother's murder), Cotton, unlike Sidney, wants the spotlight and his 15 minutes of fame that he thinks he deserves. Sidney refuses to talk to Cotton on camera and hits Gale(again). Gale is then asks a lot of questions by Debbie Salt, a press reporter.
Soon after, Cici, a sorority girl, is murdered and Sidney comes close to being killed. Derek is attacked, but survives. Derek is asked by Sidney to keep his distance until they find the killer. Gale arrives and is told by Debbie that a girl was just murdered. the next day, while Randy, Dewey and Gale are discussing who could be the murderer could be, The killer calls Gales cell phone, Randy answers and says that the killer can see them. Dewey and Gale look around for the killer while Randy keeps him talking on the cellphone. Randy is then pulled into Gales van from behind and stabbed to death.
Meanwhile Sidney, receives an instant message from the killer saying that she is going to die that night. While the two bodyguards search the library. Sidney stands near the stairway. Cotton corners her and asks her about an interview that they could do, then gets rather angry at her when she refuses, and when he yells at her in the library he's arrested and all of them go to the police station. Sidney finds out about Randy's death, and Cotton is released from lack of evidence against him.
Sidney and her best friend,Hallie, are told that they will be moved to a safe location until the killer is found. Derek says that he will wait for Sidney, then when Sidney is out of sight the phat boys take him to the theater because Derek gave Sidney his "letters".they tie him to a prop, have a small party around him and then leave him there. Sidney regrets having to leave, but thinks it'd be better. But then the killer shows up crashes the car, kills the two detectives and then while trying to escape kills Hallie. Sidney runs back to the college.
Dewey and Gale are attacked while looking for evidence of the killer identity, Dewey is attacked and the killer, unable to reach gale, runs off. Gale timidly goes out looking for help when she runs into Cotton. Then she starts to back away as she sees the blood all over his hands. Cotton frantically tries to tell her that he found Dewey and tried to help him. She runs out of the building and up to a pay phone that Debbie salt is talking on and calls the police telling them the murderer is Cotton.
Sidney runs into the theater and onto the stage looking for someone. Then The set starts moving, and Derek is revealed still tied to the prop, drunk and out cold. Then as she begins to untie him, The killer steps onto the stage and pulls off his mask. Its Mickey, he pulls out a gun and says that without Derek there, hes been having to do all the killing that night. Sidney stops untieing Derek, Derek shouts that he not the killer and while swearing at Mickey, Mickey shoots him dead. As Mickey is explaining that he intends on blaming the movie for his actions, Gale walks in Followed by Debbie Salt who is holding a gun at her. Debbie salt tells them that she is Billy's mother. She then shoots Mickey down, Mickey shoots Gale, who falls into a large gap between the stage and the stairs leading to the audience's seats.
Sidney runs away backstage and starts making the sets and props fall on Debbie, who is trying to shoot her. Then Debbie tackles her and puts a knife to her throat. They hear a gunshot during their fight, they look and see Cotton(who has Mickeys discarded gun). He is aiming it at Debbie. Sidney explains that Debbie is Billys mother and that the dead guy on the floor is the other killer. Debbie says that if Cotton lets her kill Sidney, then he'll be the one in the spotlight. Cotton tells Sidney that Debbie does have a point. Sidney looks unbelievably at him. Then he says that the interview is looking pretty good right now. Sidney says to consider it done. Cotton shoots Debbie in the lung. Then as Sidney and Cotton are looking at Debbie, Gale appears and it helped out of the Gap by Cotton while Sidney picks up the other gun. Mickey springs up and Gale and Sidney finish him with a couple of bullets, then Sidney shoots Debbie in the forehead. "just to make sure".
In the morning Dewey, who is found alive to Gale happiness, is taken to the hospital. Cotton finally gets his spotlight for being the hero and Sidney walks out in the press waiting for her.
all in all this movie is pretty cool. It tells us that it's not always wise to make a sequel, by making a sequel.
A Walk on the Moon (1999)
Fireworks, but no sound
A film of understandment of each other, thats how i see this film.
When we enter the lives of a Jewish middle class family in the summer of 1969, we see a semi happy family. The mother, Pearl, is a content housewife, convince that she should be happy with what she has. The daughter, Alison, a teenager who is convince she knows whats good for her. The father, Marty, believing that what he gave up in his youth was worth it.
Pearl, who discovers that she can make her husband any other then what he is, get caught up in an affair with the blouse man, Walker. During the affair, Pearl constantly seeks her old feelings that she use to have with her husband, that she now shares with Walker.
Alison, also tries to grasps life for all she get out of it, boys, concerts, rebelling against the man. But soon she sees that her mother is also trying to seeks all of life riches, again.
Without a doubt, My fave scene. Marty confronts Pearl, struggling to believe that she would do that after all he gave up. Like any man when this happens, rage takes over and a want to make the other person feel like they do.
Alison finally grows up and sees her birth as almost a reason why this all happened. Her birth was the result of a uncontrollable attraction between her mother and father in their teens. Her father convinced her that what happened between them was love at first sight, and he would not have had it any other way. Alison accepts this, but still shows how young she is by not seeing why they can't make their marriage work.
In the end, you sense that although Marty will never fully forgive Pearl for what she did, that they love each other, and Marty was willing to do anything to stay with her, even if it means dancing to her beat.
Everyone can connect with someone in this movie, Pearl, Marty, Alison, even Daniel the little brother. Every parent only wants there children to have what they didn't, even if it's as simple as a childhood. Everyone wants a bit more then what they have. Everyone questions what they must of done in their to end up where they are now.And Everyone never really lets go of their child/teen-hood.
Hamlet (2000)
a great Hamlet in it's own way
Why should you see this?
When you are modernizing a Shakespeare, You have to be Careful and Thoughtful. You can't just rush through it without giving it some descent thought. How should they dress? How far can we take this? a sword or a gun? Can this scene even be modernized?
The cast; A new look, yet still giving the image of the characters Shakespeare had in mind. Ethen Hawke, showing a totally new Hamlet, one with more physical showings of his emotions rather then with nothing but dialog. Julia Stiles, also giving new light to her character, rather then portraying a little, shy girl in her madness, she is loud and tear-jerking. See the scene set in the Guggenheim. Liev Schreiber; of course, giving a great performance as Laertes. Giving his character the rage and misdirection that it needed. In the sense that the death of his father, and the madness of his sweet sister leading to her tragic death, drove him to go to any lengths to avenge them both. Bill Murray giving a very believable Polonius, with the showing of his characters love for his children by constantly babying them both.
The cast, the time setting, the sets themselves reflect what modernizing is. A job that only a perfectionists could pull off. This Hamlet is worth watching, simply for the kick it gives on the one of the most famous stories of all time.
