Life After Beth (2014)
It's weird and I like it!
The cast list is impressive and quirky and full of people I like so it's cool to see them all together! You *think* you know where it's going, but then it takes a turn in a different turn. There's darkness and comedy all at once. The weight of the subject is suspended by these strange but not uncomfortable moments of brevity and wit. That's such a slippery slope to navigate gracefully, and they do it well. Not an unfamiliar story of resurrection. Whether it was Pet Semetary, 6th Sense or Godsend, each generation has their cautionary tale; The bargaining stage of grief will never work out. I appreciate the smooth jazz approach to this subject ;)
The VVitch: A New-England Folktale (2015)
Crucible fans
Great script, beautifully filmed with amazing child actors! I grew up on The Crucible and related content so I had expectations and I'm not disappointed! Harvey Scrimshaw as Caleb turns in the *MOST* incredible performance and his mastery of Olde English is positively riveting, I look forward to seeing more of him in the future! The subtle inclusion of lore and imagery helps to move the story forward without giving away too much. But brace yourself for the pecking crow, you'll cringe regardless of how steely you believe yourself to be. Also, Black Phillip isn't a sweater wearing yoga goat so it's okay if you don't want to cuddle him.
Elvis (2022)
It was...... weird
From the blue eyeshadow, heavy liner and false eyelashes on a 20 something Elvis, to the uncomfortable, awkward and questionable allusion to an inappropriate relationship with his Mother, to the Old Meets New musical mashup.....I just can't. It felt so....weird and...forced. The generation who is familiar with the legacy will find this movie unrelateable. The generation after will be confused by the false narrative. And the generation who recognizes any cast member besides Hanks will walk away with a warped view of things that likely never actually happened. This is a #supercalifragilisticaxspualudocious version of Elvis.
Paris, Texas (1984)
Nothing happens
Slow and mopey and whispery and sulky and sullen and so boring I might never recover. I can't believe people find this entertaining. I'm legitimately mad that I wasted NYE sitting through this dull movie.
Selena: The Series (2020)
It's the Abraham Show!
If they had accurately titled this series "Abraham: How A Man Built An Empire On The Backs of His Children" I wouldn't be disappointed because I'd have known what to expect. This isn't about Selena, it's about her Dad and brother. And though I really like Christian Serratos, she just isn't working as Selena. She seems uncomfortable in the role and what minimal screen time she does have, just sees her giggle and lip sync. Poorly.
As stated before, her wigs are hilariously awful so be prepared for that! I honestly don't think I'll watch any future seasons because it's been pretty boring thus far.
