Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Experimental perfection
This film is a perfect example why cinema exists - it's a harmony in film making. The story, directing, editing, animation, voice acting, music... all flawless. It culminated in a mixture of moving drama and powerful action that captivates from the very first minutes of the film.
Every shot is perfectly composed and timed, tempo well adjusted to serve the dramatic purpose, character development is captivating, and animation glues viewers to the screen. It's multilayered, rich in detail, and subliminal, providing artistic yet fun play with multiverse concept. I was in awe during every second of the film.
I applaud the film makers for bringing the experimental film into the blockbuster arena.
Trek IT! (2021)
A sincere look at Star Trek fandom (unlike Trekkies documentary)
Trek IT offers down to Earth look at Star Trek fandom and what goes on behind keeping the fan club alive. It's not a sensationalistic take on fandom as high budget Trekkies 1 & 2, but even on a small budget the directors managed to make it sincere and passionate. When my wife and I watched it for the first time it brought tears to our eyes a few times.
It might be about Italian Star Trek fandom but it can easily resonate with all fans worldwide, even in outer space (the astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti is an Italian Trekker). The name of the documentary is well thought out and the poster is simply awesome (I've heard the haircut is genuine, only the colors were altered). It's a must-watch for a fan!
Sucker Punch (2011)
Complex girl power movie ahead of its time
It's a multilayered drama disguised as visually stunning action movie made way before girl power became a Hollywood trend. It's more complex than Nolan's Inception and way more relevant for women empowerment than Wonder Woman.
