The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: The Eye (2022)
Incredible episode, I actually clapped.
The last two episodes have been sublime.
Last week showed us they could do incredible stakes and not shy away from showing real darkness.
This week was a master class of moving character scenes that had been built on the foundations laid over the rest of the season. There were about 5 scenes it could have ended on, and still been a great episode, but they kept coming!
The scenes with Durin and his father, and Durin and Elrond, were particularly moving.
I just adore the Harfoots too. I was really skeptical of having "Hobbit's in the show, but they showed them in all the glorious courage and innocence that Tolkien invested them with.
It's looking to be my favourite show since the Battlestar Galactica reboot all those years ago, and potentially ecipse the Peter Jackson movies.
I have read LotR, the Silmirillion, and some of the history of Middle Earth books since I was a a teenager in the 90's, and I love the way they are developing this mythos. I like how it is not slavish to what little is known of the Second Age, and has included new aspects and real suprprises that fit in with the spirit of Tolkien's work. I want to be suprised by fiction, not see exactly what I alread know.
American Horror Story: Great Again (2017)
Great Satire
I thought this was a great ending to an excellent season. Ioved the melon killing training, can't believe they went there! I also liked that the ending was ambiguous rather than being purely feel good. Leaving you with another political conspiracy to worry about and then fading to black. Perfect.
This season as a whole has been a hilarious no holds barred satire of satire of American politics.
It sends up absolutely everyone with no mercy, taking the most distorted fears people have about their political opponents and running with them to degrees of sublime silliness.
I particularly loved the dude bro alt right secret army in matching pyjamas, the right on progressive mum who
becomes a murderer because her wife didn't vote for Hillary , and most of all the murderous cape wearing feminist conspirators with plans to wipe out all men.
I'm suprised people even mention this show being scary in a serious fashion, for me it's been primarily a genre bending comedy satire since season one. I'm not sure if that's the intention or because I'm British and have a different perspective. Although I will admit the clowns were quite creepy this year! Kai was brilliant. Evan's performance was perfectly captivating, switching from psychological intensity to pure comedy as needed. Especially when "manwidges" were concerned.
My favourite season. I think maybe even better than 2.
Unacknowledged (2017)
close but no cigar ( shaped UFO)
This doc had a lot to recommend it, the usual plethora of good witness evidence from astronauts, aviators, and intelligence officials, a filmic momentum and higher production values than most other "UFO docs" (thank you - no trip hop!). At 3/4 ,mark I was ready to recommend it to all my friends, but I feel the last 1/4 was a step to far, which would have damaged it's credibility in the end, at least for a general audience.
The suppression of free energy is enough of a swallow (even if true) for a lot of UFO enthusiasts, but to then leap to a segment on the military industrial complex using ARV's for false flag alien invasions was unnecessary. Especially when based mainly on second hand reporting of Von Braun and psi-ops maestro Doty. In my view, Dr Greer should have stuck more closely to the core phenomenon, or made two docs. It's too short a span of time, and adjustment, to go from the question "is there any evidence for UFO's" to "there is a global conspiracy" and "we can defeat it through love and created a new promised land" I'm positive this film would would loose most of the general public at this point.
I can't help but feel, at least for audiences outside America, or the UFO scene, it would have been impossible to swallow this at a sitting, especially given the somewhat cheesy music towards the end. That's not to disparage the wonderful work Dr Greer does, but alas, I feel it needed more input from people outside the UFO scene to ground it. I'm rating it a "7" because I think it's a step in the right direction and I commend the bravery of those involved.
