Nueve reinas (2000)
A very Argentinian variation of "The Sting".
The premise is simple enough: in 2000's Argentina, two con-men meet by chance and have the opportunity of a lifetime to make it big. If only it were so easy. A very believable and relevant setting for those of us who come from countries where economic turmoil is the norm. Where the subsequent uncertainty, fear, desperation, and good-old greed entices the individual to behave amorally, in order to get ahead of his equals.
El esqueleto de la señora Morales (1960)
Extremly well made and original piece of Mexican cinema.
It's a very nice example of Mexican black humor. The story is shocking as it is original and relatable, which makes the viewer reflect on the moral dilemma presented.
Even if you're not interested in Mexican cinema this is a must see.
Du bi quan wang da po xue di zi (1976)
Unique.
This has all the elements to have become a B-movie classic due to it's silliness. However, it's creativity and more than competent production quality elevates it to be a legitimately entertaining kung-fu film. It just works.
Triumph des Willens (1935)
You've already seen this before.
If you're into Nazis, WW2 and all that jazz you've probably already seen many of clips of this movie before. The film is well made, and it's made to look like an spectacle. Problem for me was that it just doesn't end. Parade after parade and speech after speech gets tiring after the first hour. They're trying to impress the viewer, I get it, but given that we're siting in "TodayLand" one is able to see through it's message without difficulty.
It's a "must see" if you're into totalitarian propaganda films like me, so I'm glad I've finally seen it.
Moolaadé (2003)
Good film
I was very surprised by this film. Everything felt natural and it made me feel I was part of this isolated community. It made me envy their simpler way of life. Many of us have been in the position of staying true to our convictions and getting shunned for it.
My only complain was the subtitles. With the English subtitles I had available, I felt I was getting lost in translation. Since most of the film is in Bambara, I understand the difficulty to make subs for a wider international audience. However, I feel I could understand what the characters were trying to express and the subtitle going for a more "general" word instead.
Other than that the film it's worth its run time.
