Impulse (2018)
If you're looking for action, you'll be disappointed...
I finished watching Season 1 and I finally understand what's bugging me about this series. Sure, there are more "pros" than "cons". On the "pro" side there's a lot of "production value", you can see the investment in sets and FX, but on the "con" side there are a lot of silences, moody pauses, dreams and nightmares which IMHO seem like trying to extend scenes past their true length for the sake of more episodes.
What really bugs me are the actors' reactions - or in some cases - lack of reaction and real emotions. OK, I get it, Henri is a troubled teen who didn't have a great life growing up, she learned to trust herself and not make friends; but that doesn't explain her lack of reaction (unless using the "F" word for everything counts as a reaction). I mean, at the end of Season 1 she gets teleported to India with Bill Boone's arm (!) and then teleports back home to find Nikolai dissolving the rest of Boone in acid, and her she's just VERY QUIET! She even hands him a shovel, for cryingoutloud! Real people would be hopping about hysterically wanting to know what's going on. Why isn't she all over him with questions?!
So OK, I understand that Season 1 was all about building up the characters and stories - and there are a lot of stories and subplots going on. But can we get some real emotions here and not just moody stares?
Wolkenbruchs wunderliche Reise in die Arme einer Schickse (2018)
Oy gevald...
Although funny at times, and touching in a cringy kind of way, the producers should have put a little more effort into research.
There's no way that a religious Jew would bring his cellphone to the table on Friday night, not to mention pull it out and start tapping away on the screen near his parents. Not even a guy like Motti, who's trying to carve his own path in the world, despite his overbearing mother. The entire scene where his friend Yossi leaves the room to call him on his phone, on the sabbath, is totally unrealistic.
The next day, Motti wakes up in the arms of his "shiksa" girlfriend and says his mother has been calling him since 11. Now this should be Saturday morning, a day of rest for observing Jews, so why is everyone using their phones?!
And then to make things worse, Motti and Laura go to his parents (should be around noon time already), and his parents say "we should be going to the synagogue...". No way!
And I know this is "only a movie" but how many guys who look like Motti - nerdy and insecure - actually score with so many good looking girls, just like that! The guy is a walking babe magnet!
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (2016)
Sloppy directing and casting
The book wasn't bad at all, but the movie was a total waste of time. Looks as if the adaptation of the novel was done in a hurry, moving the story along at breakneck pace for no reason.
If you think Keanu Reeves acts wooden, wait till you see Asa Butterfield. Amazing things happen right in front of his eyes, but his expression stays almost the same - expressionless.
