Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them (2024)
Does Yolanda's Truth Matter
This documentary regurgitates all the facts from the case. Yolanda was accused of stealing from the Selena Fan Club. Why wasn't she charged? She wasn't charged because she was being given a chance to clear the mess up. Yolanda was given every chance to clear her name. She didn't because she couldn't. She killed Selena because Selena knew the truth. The why was always irrelevant because Yolanda killed Selena. I think Yolanda was obsessed with Selena and she was more afraid of losing Selena's friendship than being accused of the stealing. I believe Yolanda is sorry, but she's not innocent. This documentary is just an extended parole interview in preparation for Yolanda's parole hearing in 2025. Shameful.
Matriarch (2022)
No idea
I have no idea what I just watched. This is a very different horror movie. Disturbing, creepy, fascinating, horrifying and sad. I'm honestly not sure what to make of it so that's why I gave it such a low rating. In the end there were no answers only more questions. I'm not really sure why she left home in the first place other than the town is creepy and her mother is creepy and like she says, she needed to escape. The entire town is in on this secret. Which is...everlasting youth? Which doesn't make sense to me because no one looks particularly great. I'm confused. Maybe I'll watch it again and revise my review if I'm less confused. 🤣
The Last of Us (2023)
Underwhelming
I watched the first episode and I was underwhelmed. With one exception I didn't care about the characters and the story line has been done. Zombie-like creatures and a post apocalyptic world after a virus (gasp). There is nothing fresh, nothing surprising. I like Pedro Pascal and enjoy his work. His character's relationship with his daughter is sweet and her sudden death during the chaos is heartbreaking. Flash forward 20 years and we're in a 2023 post apocalyptic world. Political turmoil ensues and Pedro's character Joel, a hard working man, is very bitter and gets involved with some shady stuff. I was not familiar with the game. If I was maybe I'd care? I just don't feel the need to continue watching but I might if I get bored.
And Just Like That... (2021)
Trying Too Hard To Relevant
Ok without giving away anything here it goes. This is a different show. Different is good because people are not the same in their 50s as they were in their 30s. I enjoy nostalgia though, so seeing these characters again is fun. Like Carrie says towards the end of the first episode "we can't stay who we were." However, this shows tries way too hard to be relevant. We've got Covid, we've got racism, we've got aging, parenting issues, we've got podcasts, we've got sexual identity issues and I can go on and on. I squirmed through the first two episodes because I was embarrassed for the characters. The 3rd episode was better, but still full of clichés. The best addition to the series is Nicole Ari Parker. I'd love to see more of her character, LTW, and her family. The series writers have a lot to say, but maybe they should dial it back a bit. Extend the series and let the story lines evolve instead of hitting us with everything up front.
Malignant (2021)
Messed Up Head Trip
I almost gave up during the first 10 minutes. The film was giving off a major B movie vibe but the promise of a twisty ending kept me watching. This is some f'd up $hi! I admit I didn't pay too much attention to the plot. The plot is disjointed, but it has some unique and interesting moments. However, I doubt Malignant will ever become a horror classic.
A Christmas Carol (2019)
Slow
Far too much chatter in this modern adaptation of A Christmas Carol. Mr. Scrooge wouldn't waste his breath or his time chattering away at Bob Cratchet. And this Bob Cratchet is far more confrontational and unsympathetic than he's been depicted in any past adaption or in the novel. And what the heck is this trip through purgatory with Marley? I hardly think this is necessary. I'm so annoyed by it that I turned it off. Not appreciating this adaptation at all.
