We Own This City (2022)
Can't lace The Wire's boots.
In an attempt to squeeze in some real life narratives, they've ignored the plot, a story that has potential and could've been on par with other HBO hits. Going into details seems trivial when the show runners themselves couldn't be bothered, but one thing that is glaringly obvious is what could've been ground breaking television quite like The Wire was in its day, will just be another benign blob of hot garbage that will get lost in time amongst all the other narrative pushing shows that seemingly come out every other day.
Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two (2021)
Not as good as the first part but still satisfies.
The conclusion to The Long Halloween is more of a narration of events already in motion unlike the fresh, intriguing piece where you see a systemic unfolding of the plot in the first one. It's still true to the atmosphere set beforehand and keeps a hold of the strings for most part.
The pacing is a little haywire in parts but barely noticeable if we look at the grand scheme of things. The movie masks or at least tries to mask the 'twist' pretty well and offers sufficient thrill along the way. A few subplots were introduced half heartedly however with little to no time spent on their development and getting them to a quick conclusion.
It almost has an air of realism to it, when you think about it, a reveal is only valuable till the moment it is brought to light. I can't complaint though, would love to watch Batman and his more grounded/detective work.
Nice post-credit snippet.
Black Sails: XXVIII. (2016)
Sorry for being late to the party.
I wonder why nobody talks about this show. I understand why it wouldn't be adjacent to the normal taste but boy did this finale pay off. All the strings from far far back converge at this point. Normally I'd hate watching a character like Captain Flint bowing out and making way but it isn't the case here. From the scenic metaphors to the blend of battle and dialogue. If good acting wasn't enough the writers have outdone themselves and more with this episode. Incredible doesn't begin to describe the story. Now back to hating the world because up comes the final season. Sigh.
Perry Mason (2020)
Don't buy into the criticism.
A brilliantly written, beautifully shot, well acted show with great background music and cinematography that builds atmosphere unlike most other shows/movies. It's gritty, it's powerful, raw and yet sublime in its presentation.
This show checks all boxes, from representation to racism, the religious cults to the madness of media, the taboos of society and the 'mistreatment' of women. Now some shows can get over indulgent with checking all these boxes and forget the core of cinema, not this one.
It concentrates on the plot heavily, let's it breathe, there's no rush and it's a story told well enough to make viewers feel intelligent. There's a bit to follow and it would take a little more attention but it's done so well that it feels rewarding to watch the story unfold. It also has a much more realistic Perry Mason at helm who's had his own demons from life.
As for the criticism, it's mostly from the book reading snobs that want exactly what they read. Might as well have a re-read you folks. ✌🏻 All in all, nobody does gripping shows better than HBO.
Line of Duty: In the Shadow of the Truth (2017)
8.7? You're all kidding me.
I've watched the previous 3 seasons over a span of 6 months, on and off and never have I felt this show miss a beat, until today. I'm yet to watch the next episodes but this one has to be the worst of the lot so far. Nothing compelling, the plot seems thin, the writing inconsistent but most of all, the strongest point of this show, the acting. Every new face has been a let down and yes, I mean even the high profile new faces.
From the small screen time police staff to the MIGHTY SIO, they've all acted awfully. What seemed like a good plot point in the Forensics Expert revealing much important evidence was also acted amateurishly. Besides, DS Arnott and Superintendent Hastings are well shelled out characters that haven't pulled the weight this time. They looked uninterested. Only Kate Fleming seems to be taking this show seriously.
The whole plot point of Fleming's promotion and Arnott's jealousy seems forced and idiotic. The final nail in the coffin was the awkward push that led to the SIO ending up on the floor. Oh my, it was just as awful as Kevin Spacey's push through the stairs on House of Cards. I won't forgive the creators if this is the beginning of the end and this beloved show goes to trash too.
Watchmen (2019)
Its only the first flippin' episode!
Too many people on here finding horrendous reasons to rate the show low. No character development? No story? Not close to Watchmen? Its only the first episode people! Maybe these people are hurt because they fear the show will scrutinize the exact same entitled behavior these reviewers exhibit. So here is my 10/10, in an attempt to balance the scales, one step at a time.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Same old, same old.
Another bag of messy ingredients stuffed and tossed up to serve, insulting the audience's intelligence, just because they blindly trust the fanbase. Marvel's loyal fans deserve better and original content with actors bursting with happiness just to be a part of such an accomplished franchise.
Brie Larsen not only brought all the negativity and toxicity from her advert campaign to the screen, she managed to act bored and forced to play the most powerful Marvel Superhero. So what if its a character that was under dispute and actual comic book fans will never approve of the 'copied' character but there was plenty they could have done to make it a success, instead they play safe and bring us another 'been there, done that' movie. Viewers and critics alike are to blame because they keep making movies like Black Panther, Thor: Ragnarok and other mediocre Marvel movies a success.
Keep the studios on their toes so that they can deliver another Ironman, Captain America: Winter Soldier and Avengers: Infinity war level of content.
If its your first Marvel movie, you just might like it, but if you're a true fan who has witnessed good movies, its a massive disappointment.
