The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Exquisite start to a long-awaited Chronicle!
I grew up on the books and cartoon version of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. So, when i heard that they were making a live-action version of the film, I was very excited. I went to see the movie and was not disappointed. The costumes, special effects, acting, directing, casting, and screenplay all come together to make a phenomenal and exquisite start to one of the greatest Fantasy Chronicles ever written.
My only complaints are that Disney's family-friendly no-blood approach to the otherwise well done battle scenes takes away from the realism of the movie. although I follow their logic (wanting to make it family friendly and all) I can't help but think that Professor Lewis would be screaming "They're not bloody bleedin'!" if he saw the film. Furthermore I didn't find Queen Jadis to be nearly as terrifying as I found her to be when reading the books. I mean, she killed an entire world!! (The Magician's Nephew)
Kids in America (2005)
This film did very little for me.
Although this film did have a few laughs, I feel that most of these moments were forced. The film as a whole, although a novel attempt to show the dwindling freedom of speech rights and hypocrisy in American High Schools, felt extremely watered down and cliché filled. If you enjoy seeing a movie that challenges your way of thinking, makes you smile, and is rich in substance and thought, than this is NOT your movie.
Filled with editing work that rivals only the work of middle schoolers, and a watered down cliché storyline the only GOOD thing about this film is that Stephanie Sherrin is VERY pleasing to the eye. I could look at her all day...
