Re Shang Leng Dian Xia (2018)
Whimsical, surprising, sweet
I don't have a lot of experience with romantic shows from China, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I hope there is a season 2! Many parts of the show seem predictable, but it takes many surprising turns. The main characters make you root for them, and the villains have a depth you don't expect. All-around entertaining and sweet.
Like Father (2018)
Kristin Bell and Kelsey Grammer are good, writing is flat at times and the blatant advertising is annoying
I liked Kristin Bell and Kelsey Grammer a lot, they were very believable and mostly likable. Some of the writing could have been a little more engaging - there wasn't a lot of buildup to the key turning point in the movie, so it was kind of "meh" when it happened. There could have been more intensity leading up until that point.
The ad for the cruise was blatant and kept taking me out of the movie, so thumbs down for that. Ironic that she's supposed to be so good at advertising/marketing/branding but that was such a "fail" throughout the movie.
Seth Rogan's character seemed to be kind of a distraction, as well. Did we really need to know that much about him for the part he played in the story? It didn't seem like it. Seemed like they were trying a bit hard to make his part substantial.
But overall I enjoyed the movie, would recommend with the appropriate expectations.
Hot Fuzz (2007)
Brilliant
The most brilliant movie I've seen all year. The humor is both subtle and outrageous, a la Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. The rapid-fire editing style moves the scenes along and the equally rapid writing is engaging and hysterical. The chemistry between Pegg and Frost is simultaneously touching and genius. This movie begs, borrows and steals from other movies in the "cop" genre without apology, and to great effect.
I am a big fan of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, but I do not want to compare Hot Fuzz to Shaun of the Dead and Spaced. Hot Fuzz is brilliantly funny, ironic, subtle and well-crafted in its own right. I am sorry for the limited release in the US, as this movie deserves a wider audience. Perhaps Hot Fuzz will receive the late buzz that Shaun of the Dead has received since its release on DVD and recent airings on Comedy Central.
