Conspiracy film
25 August 2019
The narrative of this film is just full of contradictions. From the beginning until the end, it is pushed that the reason that this crime (and others) are unsolved is because the police do not care, because they are black. Yet, the film also pushes the narrative that the police want any reason to lock up black people. The film only spends one line talking about how witnesses and the community don't want to "snitch". The people who do eventually talk, all give conflicting information. Also, they try to claim the police could just look at cameras in the area and zoom in at the license plate. This was 2002. It isn't like every building has HD cameras like it does today. The film ends with the conclusion that police don't care about solving murders of black rappers, when just recently XXXTentacion and Nipsey Hussle's killers were caught. Too much assuming and conspiracy against the police department, and not much new information on who actually murdered Jam Master Jay.

From somebody with no political affiliation

I'm sure most people who watch this film already agree with what this film is set out to do. It only takes somebody aware of actual facts to immediately see that this film is a propaganda piece. An exaggerated one sided view which is extremely selective with what it allows in it. Don't expect opposing viewpoints. Don't expect any questioning of what is said. This film will most likely work well on converting Americans who are easily manipulated, can't catch hypocrisy, and have limited knowledge of how events actually went down over the course of history. For those who DO have that ability, you will find yourself wanting to scream at your TV and tell these people how things really are. I could sit here and pick apart many things in this film and try to do my best and let people have a better grasp on reality, but why would I? The facts are already out there. All they have to do is search with an open mind. I'm not saying voting democrat is the answer. They have their own issues as well. I've seen many propaganda films in my time, but this one will get any knowledgeable person really frustrated to know there are people out there eating this stuff up.

Hugs, Hearts, and Hysteria

I went into this film never having heard a Justin Bieber song and not knowing much about him. I knew he was a "big deal" and he seemed like a cocky little wigger. I wasn't a fan of his songs, but I will give credit where credit is due, and he is a very talented. I didn't know he could play the drums and guitar. It is interesting to see how he got his start. Regardless, he is still a cocky little wigger. This film documents the discovery and marketing of a teen pop star. You will also get to witness how scary females can be. Scenes like these are a step backward for womankind. Apparently, Justin Bieber also does not have any male fans.

It was nice to see fans made happy with free tickets and Bieber attention, but then I realized why they were so happy, it made me want to bury my head in my hands. Maybe one day, there will be something people can be happy and excited about, that isn't so completely ridiculous.

Philosophy of a Knife (2008 Video)
9/10
Even with it's flaws, it's still amazing.
25 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Just my opinions: First let me say I rate this film an 8.5 out of 10. Philosophy of a Knife is a film like no other. It has been said by other reviewers that it is like a giant music video. In some ways it is. That isn't a bad thing at all. Somebody really needs to contact Nine Inch Nails to get Andrey to do a video for them. The closest film I could even compare this to was the film "Goodbye Uncle Tom" (from the makers of Mondo Cane) only because it was part documentary, part reenactment, and part exploitation. Although Andrey probably didn't intend for this to be an modern day exploitation flick, it pretty much is. Although many people who made exploitation films probably weren't going for that at the time that they made their films. I found that the best way to watch this film is in 30 to 45 minute increments. I will admit at times it does drag on, but when you go away and come back it seems new, exciting, and fresh all over again. When I first heard rumors that the film might be cut down from 4 hours, I was passionate about letting the film remain in it's 4 hour entirety. Now after watching, I think it could have been knocked down to 3 and maybe even 2 hours. It would make it easier to recommend to people, because it takes quite a bit of dedication to get through the film. I don't have a short attention span, but let's just say Andrey has a exceptionally long attention span. Every scene should remain in the film, but many of the scenes contain many redundant shots. In some cases, the length of certain gore scenes make it lose it some of it's potency. However, I must say, the EFFECTS in this film are pretty much outstanding. Although, I wasn't a fan of the "old vintage film" effect used throughout the entire film (with the little lines and stuff). It wouldn't have been that big of deal if the effect wasn't still used on still-shots of photos or in the scenes with modern footage. It even used the effect on top of already "old vintage footage", making it "double vintage footage". I wish they had interviewed more people to give their opinions and views on Unit 731. For a documentary it's always nice to get many perspectives. Despite, the flaws I listed, this film is one of the best independent films to come out in years. The music done by Alexander Shevchenko in the film is top notch and can stand on it's own. It's good to buy the 2 Disc Special Edition so you can have all the music. Some of the most powerful scenes in my opinion were the "frost bite testing" when the guy is made to walk, and the scene towards the end with the Japanese solider letting the girl go. (very beautiful scene). It's a visual masterpiece. If you took all the best parts of this film, it would still be longer and better than all the "extreme" movies nowadays. If "extreme" was a genre, this would be one of it's crown jewels.
