Susan Slade (1961)
Delightfully bad
I can't believe I'm seeing "Susan Slade" again after all these years on Turner Classic Movies. Warner Bros cranked out these formula films with the same contract players for years. From "A Summer Place" to "Parrish," the exquisite music of Max Steiner and deft directing of Delmar Daves against a picturesque backdrop combined to create a certain screen magic for a naive early 60s generation. Troy Donohue was the handsome, brooding good guy, played with all the charisma of a turnip. Connie Stevens, not exactly Academy Award material her own self, was the naughty nubile. A supporting cast of fine older actors (Lloyd Nolan, Dorothy McGuire) helped with credibility, but couldn't overcome this sappy script. The names of the young characters rivaled the Elvis movies for creative crud (Con White, Hoyt Becker). Still, I watched and remembered. And it was 1961 all over again.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Like wine...ND gets better with time
My daughter turned me on to Napoleon Dynamite. She's 24 and a first year 6th grade teacher. Almost every kid in her class is wearing a "Pedro for President" t-shirt or moon boots. The kids quote the movie and drop "Napoleonisms" into every conversation. The guy almost single-handedly made geek groovy. I'm in my 50s and find Napoleon Dynamite the most entertaining movie I've seen in years. The Hess brothers did a great job casting this film. Their Idaho hometown provides the perfect small town backdrop for this dry, off-beat comedy. But don't dismiss it with one viewing. Like wine...ND gets better with time. Napoleon is quickly challenging Seinfeld re-runs for my pathetic multiple viewing habits. The soundtrack has revived the careers of 80s acts Cyndi Lauper, Alphaville and When In Rome. Sweet! Are you guys having a killer time? If not, flip on your cable or satellite 'cause Napoleon is kickin' out the jams on a premium channel near you. See him again...for the first time.
