Hilarious

Shameless plug for the Glossary of Broken Dreams, which I saw last night. Deleuze, Latour, Marx, Foucault and loads more but my favorite was the scene where the American President explains the Global Economy and Labour Economics with green slime.

Wonderful doc

Unbiased direction and yet very strong statements being made here. This doc helps illustrate how extreme religion can get without necessarily being violent. This mentality is not only prevalent in my area, but causes turmoil even amongst religious groups.

A fish and the world
25 April 2017
The Nile Perch, a voracious predator, extinguished almost the entire stock of the native fish species. However, the new fish multiplied so fast, that its white fillets are today exported all around the world. Huge (ex-)Soviet cargo planes come daily to collect the latest catch in exchange for their southbound cargo: Kalashnikovs and ammunition for the uncounted wars in the dark center of the continent.

A grim (must-see) portrait of globalization.

Monsanto?
22 April 2017
As detailed in the film, Monsanto has long been steeped in controversy. During its earliest incarnation at the start of the twentieth century, the company manufactured a series of products which were eventually deemed unacceptably toxic in their applications, including the DDT insecticide, Agent Orange and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB).

Monsanto produced the latter in the town of Anniston, Alabama for nearly four decades. When Anniston residents began to link the chemical to increased incidents of cancer, retardation and a variety of other chronic illnesses and abnormalities, they successfully sued the company to the tune of 700 million dollars.

The film spends much effort in exploring the dangers of Monsanto's most profitable product - Roundup, a herbicide that has proved enormously popular in both homes and agricultural communities for its ability to kill weeds. The filmmakers discover that the company was reprimanded twice for false advertising in claiming the product was biodegradable and friendly to the environment. Many concerns persist regarding its potential long-term effects on the environment and human health as proper testing has never been officially sanctioned.

Drive me to your leader!
22 April 2017
A captivating documentary, not only about nerds, but the human condition: obsession, longing, hubris, greatness. Grenzfurthner introduces himself as a tour guide through nerdvana, very ironic and self-aware, but also deeply honest about his upbringing, his interests and his political views. Some of the places, subjects and people are bizarre, some insightful and some politically and socially challenging, but always fun. That is the brilliance of Traceroute.

Sultry, seductive and almost completely trashy
18 April 2017
This big-haired adaptation of John Updike's feminist text stars Cher and I found it to surpass the novel. It is impeccably cast with Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer as a trio of divorcees and spinsters wronged by almost every man in their life unwittingly conjure Jack Nicholson, - the perfect man - who is revealed as the living Devil, after a conversation at night over several glasses of wine. Nicholson gives a career-defining performance as a comically insane seductor. Its less about witchcraft and more about loneliness and boredom in mid-life suburbia. Veronica Cartwright is also incredible.
