I Am Another You (2017)
Well done, but ultimately deluded by the misperception of obvious mental illness
I have a nephew that suffers from the same exact mental illness. Call it what you will. The filmmaker and most in this movie want to characterize Dylan's perception of the world as an elevated way of being, a higher plain of existence. The sad truth is that his logic (and those like him) is an endless loop of inconsistent prattling that never leads to any certain conclusions. Always on the edge of brilliance, but never really reaching an epiphany of any kind. He is very much schizophrenic. That's the plain, simple, painful truth of it all that many want to write off as misunderstood. My Nephew with the same issues, walks the earth, damaging relationships, spending time in jail, walking the earth, hearing voices, getting into arguments, suppressing voices with drugs and alcohol, etc, etc, etc.
Is that misunderstood genius? Trust me, it's not. Seeing it first hand and watching a wonderful boy grow into a delusional man is a sad and painful experience, but it is what it is. Untreated schizophrenia.
Special Correspondents (2016)
Not horrible, but not great either. Same old thing....
At this point, Gervais (a comedic genius adept at live performances and excellent TV programs) has proven that he should avoid movies. Thus far everything that he's written and directed has contained phoned in performances and predictable scripts.
I was really pulling for this one as all of the actors involved are top notch, but once again it was lack luster all around. Not horrible, but just....boring. All the actors felt like they were 'acting', rather than inhabiting the role.
As for predictability, you can see the entirety of the script a mile a way. Also, Gervais has an annoying "crutch" that he uses in every movie by relying too much on musical montages. It felt like there were 3 or 4 music videos in the middle of the movie, then followed by that same......old......predictable.....last conversation between friends or lovers while the camera pulls up and out of the final scene. Ugh
I wouldn't say avoid it, but don't get your hopes up. You'll just be waiting for it to end.
Staying Alive (1983)
If you like this movie, there's no hope for you
Seriously. I get that some movies are so bad they're good. I get that most sequels are doomed before they start. I get that cheesy movies can be fun, but.....
This is a straight up abomination of a movie. EVERYTHING that was bad at that time period. Every cliché. Horrific, bubblegum music with no soul, little talent and played out lyrics. Flat, pointless dialogue. Soap opera characters.
So when I say there is no hope for you, I mean:
1. You don't understand good cinema (even when it's bad)
2. You don't know what good music is. Including all genres. This is the worst type of hack 'music'
3. You don't get how good dialogue or performance can elevate even a horrible movie.
Sorry to judge, but anyone giving this thing anything over 3 stars does not get movies and shouldn't be reviewing them.
Yeah, it's all subjective, I know, but this is an exception. This is easily in the top 3 of the worst movies ever made. Nothing redeeming and actually flat out disrespectful to its predecessor.
