Slander (1957)
Solid and serious
Solid look at the world of gossip magazines in the 50s. National Enquirer and the like. They didn't know what was coming with the internet and social media (tame by comparison to today's Slander). Van Morrison was a great actor and all the cast turned in good performances as a man's reputation is put on the line and created huge discord.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Forget the notion there are 28 plots in Hollywood films
This one is different, in a good way. DO NOT tell folks about the ending - it's one of those. But the notion that there are just 28 plots in all H'wood flicks, and that all the others are based on those, is just not true. Bravo to Quinton for breaking that 4th wall. A movie within a movie, then altering the course of world events. All with excellent acting by all principals AND smaller part folks? Awesome. One of the best films of recent history. Now I have to go watch Pulp Fiction again, as I was one of a very few who didn't appreciate it.
ReMastered: Devil at the Crossroads (2019)
Robert Johnson revealed
Finally a documentary by the Zybalists about Robert Johnson, a huge contributor to the blues. Only 2 photos of him exist. One of the great fathers of blues, Johnson heavily influenced the Stones, Hendrix, Eric Clapton and many others. Technically very good example of surround sound 5.1.
Dekigokoro (1933)
Delightful a look at the heart of Japanese people pre WWII
A look at pre WWII Japan and it's family cultural values. Who would guess in 30 years they'd industrialize with the introduction of the transistor radio and great affordable cars.
Perry Mason: The Case of the Two-Faced Turn-a-bout (1963)
Where's Perry?
This is not a review, as much as some observations. Some great location shots of an amusement park - wonder which one it was with the "Laff" ride - The Pike in Long Beach or the one in Santa Monica (when it had more rides). I'm surprised that Perry Mason (Raymond Burr) is not in this episode? The above review said he was home recovering from an operation. Wonder why they shot the episode without him - perhaps in the day the production schedule and b'cast schedule of shows required them to shoot one without the main actor? Interesting? These shows are gems, with some really great character actors, like the German guy who was also in The Great Escape, and/or Stalag 17.
