Miss Scarlet & the Duke (2020)
So much fun!
Fun escapism to victorian england. This show is creative, witty and and if you are into period peices + enjoy mystery with a dash of romance, you'll certainly enjoy this.
That is to say that the first season was the best and strongest in my opinion. Season 2 and 3 felt quite repititive and the will they won't they plot between the two main leads dragged on........ like...... ALOT!!
Season 3 does better as we get introduced to new charecters and the charecter development/depth starts taking a toll (which I think is what was lacking in season 2). As another reviewer already mentioned, the show would have done better adding on more layers to the charecters (as was seen in the first season with Eliza's greiving her father, introduction to romance with william etc.)
The romance is the main reason it feels like a drag but the first season was orginally superb. I like the introduction of Arabella/Nash. Ivy & Moses are fantastic & deserve honorable mentions <3.
Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Top Teir
- Mr. Darcy stares creepilyat Eliza in the first half of the show I dont even knwo what to make of it lol.
- I feel like Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy is still missing personality, in the book he very much has one.
- First proposal is missing chemistry somewhat. I heard that was the first scene they filmed so that makes sense. Shouldn't have been that way as they effect would have been tripled had it been filmed sequentially.
- Appeals well to modern audiance
- So much of it is from lizzie's perspective, plus I feel ike the actress smirks alot, sometimes rudely and sometimes she's too timid.
- Beautiful scenary
- It doesnt feel as if months have passed in between plots but I guess it felt that way when it was releasing.
- Lydia and Mrs. Benneet, and Mr. COLLINS are perfect lol
- Jane is so bland and boring
- In the scenes leading up to and after her 2nd proposla, scene Eliza's missing her bridal glow but Jane had it
- The tone of the book is captured so perfectly.
Mr. Malcolm's List (2022)
Leaning towards a 6.5, cozy film
I personally found this movie quite charming. Sure, I quite dislike how some aspects/plots in the regency era are somewhat limited, and frankly people have not been the most creative in this genre but this movie is refreshing. There is a mix of some originality and repetitiveness (refering to P&P 2005 obvious influence: opening scene proposal to Selene, ducks/geese walking around, the popular use of the word 'ardently', etc) which I wish directors would stop trying to copy and embrace their orginality, for the most part this film is.
The side charecters stole the show for me, especially Julia & Cassy! Compared to the main leads who were a bit bland but tolerable. I do enjoy diverse casting as it makes the movie somewhat more relatable but I am able to understand why other people do not, seeing as it casually erases all emphasis with respect to history and I would not want, say, a white man representing my culture as others have stated below. No racism, just consider the fact that a british guy leads the role of a chinese emperor in a historical adaptation, doesn't fit does it? Or an arab bedouin haha. But somehow with the HR genre becoming more popular, add bridgerton to the equation and the representation seems to be normalized....?
Prison Break (2005)
Gripping First Seasons...
The first season is spectacular which is why I kept my rating an 8. As most people have already said, I honestly wish they stopped after season 2. It's evident that they kept renewing the show's seasons just for money grab and popularity, or it was FOX that liked extending the story further when it obviously had nowhere to go after the first escape and the Vice President issue was solved. It got so repititive after what started out to be a gripping show that kept you at the edge of your seat every second! Just to give you an idea, when I first started watching, I was so excited I was sitting on the floor trying to concentrate (no kidding), by the later seasons I kept it on in the background as I browsed through my phone.
I hated how the writers desregareded huge aspects of the story whenever convenient (ex. Not a mention of LJ in S4 & S5 when he was the driving plot for the first 3 seasons?). Plus, the reccuring theme/blueprint became pretty obvious after season 3 (Micheal & Co planning escape, Assasin tries to kill them, assasin hired by an Evil person *slow eyeroll*).
Season Rated from Best to Worst:
Season 1 - (9/10)
Gripping, unexpected, fresh & exciting.
Season 2 - (7.8/10)
Great, not as good as 1 obviously but it still had that element of surprise that made you want to keep watching.
Season 5 - (6.6/10)
I liked this season, although it was a bit rushed and kind of felt like a fanfiction story of your favorite charecters. Naturally, there was much improvement in background and scripts than the seasons below.
(Honestly I would recommend not watching 3 & 4, they are pointless).
Season 3 - (6/10)
Useless season, picks up towards the end.
Season 4 - (4/10)
Needless, repititive and the conspiracy was so annoying. Literally a soap opera.
Charecter Developments:
1) Micheal - Everyone's favorite charecter and rightly so, however when they took the normalcy out of him and made him invincible and so smart it started becoming boring. I liked how chill and normal he was in the first 2 seasons. The story was so sweet in the beginning.
2) Linc - He became so cringey. A big buff macho man who is either threatening/punching someone, saying he misses his brother or just driving fast lol.
3) T-Bag - Best development out of all the charecters, props to the actor.
4) All others - the rest were good except for Don Self I really didn't like the charecter/actor. The difference in writing/script after S1 could have been much better.
Take my advice and only watch the first 2 seasons and season 5.
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016)
Been avoiding this for the longest time
But I was pleasantly surprised how fun this was to watch! This coming from an Austen purist and a person who doesn't enjoy action movies. I quite enjoyed the interpretation, granted that naturally the main morals of the story are diffused to the maximum, theres no use even pointing out the inaccuracies of the time period (however it bothered me how they kept some social etiquettes and ignored the other formalities which doesn't make sense). I also immensely disliked Mrs.Bennet's actress, however the creative direction the plot takes was really good.
Pride and Prejudice (1980)
Truest to the book
This version also in my opinion captures the natures of Elizabeth, Jane, Mr.Bennet and Mr.Bingley perfectly. Mr.Darcy was too stiff. Sure it still has its faults but I adore how it was portrayed, the dialogue is excellent. I particularly love how it is not romanticised like the other versions.
