Vdova (2020)
Soviet history a real horror
Since concerned citizens are still finding mass burial sites from Stalin's reign (when not beatened or threatened by Soviet romanticists) I figured this movie was going to involve ghosts of zeks or Article 58er's. No such luck but this film did manage to make me forget my status quo for about 80 minutes and enjoyed the dark atmospherics of a remote boreal forest still lost in the past. Recommended viewing, watch it......slava!
Kolyma. Trilogiya (1991)
long before the stalag there were the gulag....
Think sepia, you'll come close to the hue of this epic documentary. Produced during the USSR's last gasp it remains a memorial to unspeakable torment and deprivation. Glossy productions were done in the West about the gulag decades, from the BBC to ARTE collaborations but none touch a nerve like this raw Russian project. For all its faults the Yeltsin era permitted the space in which this was made. Surely such a candid endeavor, in spoken English, would be shelved by Putin's censors. So watch this while available at Internet Archives. Unforgettable.
