AJ and the Queen (2020)
Literally everything.
AJ and the Queen is everything I hoped it would be and more. Rupaul is absolutely fabulous as Ruby. He is exactly like you would imagine if you are a fan of drag race. You also get to see another side of him, in front of the camera as a star, instead shining the light on his rising drag children. The proud mother of course showcases her daughters. Within the first 5 minutes you get to see Bianca, Vanjie, Valentina, and Eureka. There is catchy music, there are big wigs, beautiful gowns, a hilarious blind man that sounds like Monet X Change, a villain with an eye patch, and a super sweet little girl who you will fall deeply in love with. I watched the whole season in one day never stopped smiling.
Murder in the Bayou (2019)
Heart breaking, mind blowing, eye opening.
This documentary is so sad. I was affected by it right off the bat. The hurt and pain that the family of these girls feel hits you right away. The sadness is followed by anger. How could this continue to happen in this small town!? Why isn't anyone doing anything!? If you are just looking for an easy watching crime story, this is not it. It's uncomfortable. It's raw. It's a look into the divide between the rich and poor at its most tragic point. I didn't enjoy it, but I felt I had to hear the stories of these women.
Dark Tourist (2018)
Important look at travel and the human condition
I'm a huge fan of the non traditional travel shows like an idiot abroad, so when I saw this was on Netflix I was so excited to watch it. I was not disappointed at all! This one is totally not like an idiot aboard by any means though. It's not laugh out loud funny, it's not making fun of tourism, it's completely the opposite. It's exploring how mad we are in the developed world for wanting to travel to what may be considered horrible and dangerous places. It's hard to tell if the host is enjoying himself or not, but that's half the fun of watching it. I liked every episode of this and would recommend it to anybody who loves travel, but hates the standard travel show.
The Alienist (2018)
Peaky blinders meets true detective.
Just binged the whole 1st season of this. I love crime, especially European, but this one definitely holds up against all of those. It's dark, exciting, and the characters are fantastic. It's not HBO, but there is some adult material.
