3 Body Problem (2024)
the UK-version of "Friends" is fighting an alien invasion
I love the books.
This show - sadly not at all.
The un-necessary & wrong decision in the change of the character-setting is just ridiculous. Splitting the main character(s) of the books up into a diverse UK-ish circle of friends (with partly bad actors and partly unlikable characters) is turning the exceptional and credible story-line of the books into a cheap implausible soap opera.
What remains is in the end simply riding on the massive wave of the excellent books. Anytime the producers decide to go off-track of the original story with their own "ideas", the show declines massively.
In short:
The (tragically known) producers did it again. Turning another person's outstanding story with wrong decisions and a big budget into a mediocre trivial TV show.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
a decent overhyped movie
The movie has great shots, a dark atmosphere, a dramatic sound setting and surely great effects and action.
The storyline though is not consistent and just not catchy and elaborated enough to make it an actual great movie to remember.
Compared to the original book it is based on, the story has been misused a lot. Large parts of the movie have been added to the actual story just for unnecessary further dramatical effects and further action.
So in the end, a movie to watch once. And to forget fast.
The past has proven many times, that the Oscars can be wrong. It looks likes they just did it again. On a decent movie, nevertheless.
Love, Death & Robots: Jibaro (2022)
how it feels to be bemused by a sirene
I have never felt so highly uncomfortable but yet so completely fascinated at the same time.
It is horror, it is beautiful, it is art.
The aprubt changes in speed, color, audio & story are hypnotizing but yet so gut-wrenching.
This one surely will stuck, together with the Fincher Episode the absolute highlights of the 3rd season.
Kudos to the makers.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
DC > Marvel
Surely a comparison many won't agree with.
This massive movie gave me just so much more pure & better entertainment then any Marvel movie before though.
Already during the movie I was looking forward to rewatching the movie.
It is of course missing the humorous and colourful setting of Marvel, which is just obviously shaped for a wider scope of viewers.
These 4-hours were worth every second for me. The darker and more violent setting of DC movies just feels way more authentic to me then the family-style of Marvel.
It is a small cinematic tradegy we will never see the initally planned full trilogy of Justice League. The explosive setting with many open cliffhangers at the end of Justice League 1, including many known and new faces, just feels like a punch into the stomache now.
The Last Duel (2021)
at last, a movie to impress in so many ways
Did not expect too much but was surprised in the best way
the setting is cinematic but authentic as it can be
the acting is formidable
the story sticks close to the true historic background and is actually a great mirror to our past and although to many current issues we have as people and as society in general
and the actual duel in the end is a highlight of it's own - exceeding even the duels in Gladiator by far. Haven't felt this kind of tension in a movie scene for a very long time.
Army of Thieves (2021)
movie tries hard to be smart & funny - fails completely
The main actor and character already did not impress in "Army of the Dead". Now this actor additionally turned into director and turns the whole movie into a mess. They used the prequel label just for marketing purpose but without any actual logical connection to "Army of the Dead". But logic is missing in the storyline completely anyway.
I actually skipped forward several parts of the movie after watching the first half as I realized there will be no actual new or exciting plot - and I never skip movies usually.
Also the characters in the movie are just as obvious and cheap as the story.
And most exhausting is the way how hopelessly hard the movie tries to be funny and smart.
Short: Save yourself the time and the disappointment.
Wir sind die Welle (2019)
bad actors + miserable writting = not worth my time
Taking current german society issues as story guideline based on the successful german classic "the wave" may be a good but easy idea to set up a potential show. mixing it with the style and words of today's youth may also be a understandable and reliable ingredient.
Nevertheless, this show just fails completely, as the makers obviously and only relied on the things mentioned above and totally ignored good acting or writing. the story jumps from one logical flaw to the other, from one stupid scene to the next.
the topics may be relevant and potentially profound, the storyline still remains a big and meaningless disappointment.
Joker (2019)
a masterpiece - the Joker is real
From the first minute to the last, the Jo(a)ker catches you and keeps you entertained, tensed up and mesmerized. Joaquin Phoenix shows a one of a kind performance with a huge but easy to be missed character development on such a constant extreme "crazy" level, it just makes the resulting Joker frightening real. There may have been bad, good and grand Joker interpretations. This one is the real deal.
