Pathfinder (2007)
Not all that bad, worth seeing it for Karl Urban
This movie is not as bad as some say. Yes, the editing is rubbish, the scenes have no flow and sometimes is confusing. Yes, the seasons are crazy, in one scene it's snowing, the next one is not, then snow again, then not...And yes, the script isn't great either, very poor. The Vikings are shown as killing machines with no purpose and the Indians afraid of those new weapons the vikings carry: swords.
At the beginning of the movie it is stated that it is a legend and so it's shown as such. Do not expect a great story, just a simple one with some good fights, a big gore and a lot of running. I also thought some scenes were very dark and so can't really see who's killing who.
But all in all, it isn't that bad, especially if you like Karl Urban, showing muscular chest and gorgeous face. He is one of those actors who people don't really talk about, but he is one of the most handsome. His acting is not bad, just has a bad script. He does make you feel kind of sorry for him at times. So I give it 6/10, as it contains some good photography and action packed scenes.
Tapas (2005)
Great vision of Spanish people
I came across this movie as there was nothing else on TV. I missed the beginning, but I kept on watching as I found it really interesting. I'm from Barcelona myself and live, at the moment, in one of the suburbs here. The characters in this film couldn't be more Spanish, or should I say "Barcelonians"? The movie follows the lives of normal people, with normal jobs, as common as they could be: a bar owner (there's at least one bar in every street here), as stall owner (there are lots of markets as well) and an old couple struggling to survive (as it happens, pensioners don't have a lot of money also) Their lives intertwine magnificently and you really feel sorrow and happiness for them. The lives they live could be the ones from my neighbours next door, if you know what I mean. The two young guys that work in the shop just remind me to some of my friends; their language, expressions and their whole life styles. The bar man is exactly the way some bar men are here: sexist, ignorant, fat,... I mean, if you come to Barcelona all you'll see is Sagrada Familia, Ramblas, the beach...and will eat a lot of overpriced tapas. If you really want to know our life style, get the Metro to a place like the one in the film (which actually is Mercat Nou) such as Hospitalet or, where I live, Nou Barris. You'd actually meet some real people like the ones in the movie, plus eat well for a reasonable price as we do. I know, maybe I got a bit carried away, I'm supposed to talk about the movie, but I just loved it and thought it was better than all that Almodovar stuff as they're always about sex, transvestites or whores. Don't mean to offend anyone, but real Spanish people are pictured in "Tapas", not in an Almodovar film!
Melody Time (1948)
A great enjoyment for the little ones
I have seen this movie dozens of times and can't get tired of watching it. It's a great movie for small children, like my son and nephew, who are just 9 and 20 months, respectively. They're great entertainment, beautiful songs, nice stories of love, respect for others and nature and fun. For me the best are Pecos Bill and Little Toot. You just have to admire Disney's cartoonist for all the wonderful work they did as you cannot forget that this was made in 1948 thus all hand drawn! This is a great way of introducing kids into cartoon and animation movies, as other Disney movies, such as Lion King, Finding Nemo etc are for when they're a bit grown up. Once again, thumbs up for this, just as The three caballeros, Fantasia and Make mine music. There's just way too much violence and sex on TV for small kids to watch it, so stick to this magical movies and keep their innocence and imagination alive.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
It could have been better
I was rather disappointed about this movie. I had heard so much about it and it left me almost like after I watched Lost in translation! Waiting for something to happen! Maybe I missed the point of it all, again like in LiT, but I thought the characters were poor, boring and the whole movie just slow and not romantic at all! Ennis is so serious and doesn't display any affection for anyone, Jack seems a bit more interested! I thought this was a love story about the two lads but seems more like the just want to shag each other from time to time and I don't see much feelings into it! I was disappointed with the end of the movie too, we don't know if Jack was killed or what really happened to him, and the only sign of love was when Ennis cries at the end looking at the shirt that Jack had kept all those years. I don't know if anyone shares this opinion with me or can explain a bit what I have missed, maybe I should watch it again, as I've only seen it once.
