How to Plan an Orgy in a Small Town (2015)
Not Funny
This movie is just not funny. I am not sure what else to say since I don't think this movie has anything else going for it at all either. I was very disappointed.
The two main actresses in this are actually very good in most other things I have seen them in. The main reason we watched this were because these actresses were in it but the movie was just awful. I don't know if they just turned in an unusually bad performance or if they were just coasting or in it for a quick pay check, or if they just had nothing to work with as far as a script and director went, or some combination of these things? But it was just a very bad, boring, unfunny movie. Also very unoriginal and predictable, and most of the other actors were just plain bad. Highly recommend skipping it.
Sliders (1995)
Started Great
I thought this show started great so I'm giving it a (very generous) rating of 9 out of 10. At first it was an incredibly unique premise (about people sucked into a vortex who then have to travel from world to world (or dimension to dimension actually), hoping to one day "slide" back home, to their original planet earth.
The effects were also very good for their time, although now they are pretty dated and even funny.
The cast was good. John Rhys Davies was amazing as the Professor, and Sabrina Lloyd was a favourite of ours too. After he left the show really jumped the shark, and after she left the show it was pretty much completely unwatchable. I didn't mind the actress who replaced her as much as other reviewers here but the show just wasn't the same. Remy was also great and Jerry O'Connell was good, though in the last half of the series he seemed to be on auto-pilot and didn't really care. His brother was just awful.
I would recommend just watching until the original characters start to leave. After that the show really loses itself and is no longer very good.
Citizen Kane (1941)
Love This Old Movie
I don't like a lot of old movies. I love all of Alfred Hitchcock's classic suspense films and I had heard very mixed things about Citizen Kane when I borrowed it from the library. It seems like it must be a very polarizing movie because most of the comments and reviews here, plus all of the "word of mouth" I have gotten over the years, seems to put people either at one extreme or the other, saying that this is the greatest film of all time or that it's the most overrated piece of garbage movie that's ever been made in the history of film.
I was pretty surprised when I watched it to find out that I am in the "loved it!" camp. The acting, writing, cinematography and direction are all absolutely top notch in my mind, especially when you consider this film was made in 1941.
Is it the greatest film ever? I don't think so. But it definitely was at the time, and look at it this way - ever since then every single great movie had to aspire to be better than this film. They've got more groundbreaking cinematography, etc, but a lot of that is built on what this film had done and therefore owes a lot to it. Also we have to remember there have been great advances in equipment, etc, so people after this era could do more and could do so easier. Even just camera movements would have been a lot more difficult back then. They hadn't even had audio in films for that long at the time! I think a lot of people who hate this movie really are just disliking the fact it is slow and old and in black and white, but if you watch it for what it is this is still a masterpiece and one of the greatest films of all time.
