Midnight Mass (2021)
Not bad, just depressing
I just finished Midnight Mass, and there are few movies/shows that truly make me feel the way this one has. It's not bad by any means, the prosthetic/makeup work leaves a lot to be desired, which took me out a bit, but the story in and of itself has left me feeling anxious and depressed. It's not scary per se, of course we have the typical jump scares from time to time, but the monologues are far more affective than anything else. As someone who is pretty unbothered by a lot of horror films and can handle gore and grossness, this series left me with a lump in my throat, in tears, and just feeling despondent. The monologues were a bit long in my opinion, but maybe that's the point. The biggest fear I have is death, the finality of it. If you feel anxiety about death, do not watch this. The monologues in episode 4 made me turn it off. We all know what death involves, and sure as a society we hate talking about it, and try to run as much as possible from the idea of it. So much so we are afraid to grow old and accept that what we once were is so temporary. This show slaps you in the face with that reality in a poetic, gritty way. The town, buildings, everything in Crockett is deteriorating, it's cold, dark, and foreshadows the very themes. It's very immersive. I'm glad to have gotten through it, and I'll never watch it again. If the director was aiming to get this emotion from the audience, well done sir.
Killer Advice (2021)
Terrible acting, ending just overacted and ridiculous, even for Lifetime
I will say I didn't watch the entirety of the movie, probably the last 10 minutes or so. But I think I can safely say that those 10 minutes, which are supposed to be the climax, just fell flat.
The director should be ashamed for allowing these actresses to ridiculously overact. Everything was so over the top, it just wasn't believable. Normally you should feel completely engaged in the story, this ain't it sis.
The actresses should go back to acting class, or find some passion. But they acted like they learned their craft in a back alleyway by someone without the slightest clue about acting.
I've never left such a scathing review, but this was a special kind of terrible.
