Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001)
Mark Linn-Baker gives a stunning performance
As Wally Stevens in this episode of Criminal Intent. Not to take away from Kathryn Erbe or Vincent D'Onofrio, but they're just slow pitching to Mark in this episode. He really deserved an Emmy (at least a nomination!) for his work as an insurance executive who has Asberger's and who is helping the detectives with their case. His acting at the end is jaw-dropping, sad and beautiful.
Pennyworth (2019)
A Worthy Addition to canon
This show is awesome. Like most British crime dramas it has a great look, solid writing, excellent acting. A compelling set of plots that are set up in the first three episodes. I'm on the free month and I'm terrified that my family is going to find out I've subscribed to yet another service. EPIX, you've got me. I love this show. And it's exacting the way one would imagine Alfred to be as a young man, sweet, courageous, capable and clever. A former SAS soldier with two classic type war buddies and go are great characters too. DC should be proud.
Miss Sloane (2016)
A buried classic!
This movie got lost in the financial problems of its parent company, Europa, which is also Luc Besson's production company. That's why it never got a proper US release. Which is a great shame because it would have cleaned up at the Academy Awards. Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture, Best Screenplay. It would have cleaned up. And Jessica Chastain's performance will be studied by acting students for a generation at least. She is magnificent as Miss Sloane. Mark Strong is excellent as her boss, Sam Waterson (Law and Order) does a great job as her lobbyist adversary.
I won't divulge the script except to say that the gun people have it wrong railing against the "liberal Hollywood types" making a case against gun ownership. First, it's only about mandatory background checks, nothing more. And second, it's a DAMN MOVIE. Calm down. They used guns as a plot point because it's dramatic. That's all. If it had been rice cakes that was the subject, nobody would watch it. Not that rice cakes aren't kind of dramatic but not enough to fund a movie over their sale and use. Can't hunt with a rice cake.
I'm not anti gun. I used to be but I lost my passion for it after Charlottesville. A world full of alt-right loonies and white supremacists, makes concealed carry mandatory.
But this movie isn't about Charlottesville or any other real life incident. Nevertheless it's brutally effective in making its point.
One of the best performances I've seen in many years. A terrific script too. Directed by a veteran film director. Great supporting cast. What's not to like?
It's a 10, without reservation.
