Black Adam (2022)

Forget origin flicks
21 October 2022
This was nothing but a monument to Dwayne's massive roided up ego. No one wants PG13 Black Adam. The Rock is waaaaaayyyyyyy to old. Nothing will come from this bloated, repetitive, bad cgi wannabe popcorn flick that utterly fails. You think the new heard of WB is gonna do another one? Think again. He's there "trim the fat" & reboot ALL of the DCEU. IOW cheap stars & flicks and as many eyeballs on them as possible...creativity & stars will take a backseat. I'd make a joke here that Mark Wahlberg will be the next Superman & battle Rock Adam, but they can't afford Wahlberg once let alone Johnson twice.

If Instagram produced a movie.
26 September 2022
I put this Hulu flick on at 1 in the afternoon while doing laundry and packing for an upcoming work trip. All I could think of while watching thus movie was Instagram "stories". I had just watched Shiloh Hernandez (even his name is Instagrammable!) in a movie on Tubi with the actress from Gone Girl and I Care A Lot. Like this, it too was a bad flick but that actress (I don't know her name, she never became an A-lister) is so great she elevates her films if given enough creative license to do her thing. I cannot believe how difficult it is to try and come up with six hundred characters to fill the gap. Cringe & thirsty.

Jeffrey Dahmer is the sub plot
26 September 2022
Just. Wow. I'm still shook. It took several days to watch this. If you can't/don't "disconnect" from the internet fir the roughly 10 hours this spans, then just watch Jeremy Renner or My Friend Dahmer & you'll get that part of the story. Taken in as a full 10 hours this became, for me, less than just about Jeffrey & more of an epic composition of stories of different people all of whom became caught up in the ensuing cat-5 this story would become. It becomes a commentary of humans & humanity. Of guilt vs shame vs apathy vs blame. Of religion and how humans view religion, regardless of affiliation, and use it in their own individual way to gain their perspective of their own world...of which, like it or mot, we are all a part of. My grand takeaway from this was rather...restrained? Dim? Hopeful? That time only ever moves forward as it creates and then erases mountains and that we are really just "dust in the wind" as time moves on & that good & well-intentioned people get tossed by the wayside in humanity's ever survival-of-the-fittest. I'm going to go hug my dog and cat now after a long, hot shower. If this doesn't sweep every major award category come award season, and not just for Peters (I cannot fathom how one falls into such a role so completely without carrying some if that funk with you for life) but the also the brilliant Niecy Nash then there truly is no redemption for us.

Leave your expectations at the door
21 September 2022
I must admit I do get a genuine kick out of people giving films like this a serious review like they're Siskel & Ebert. I watched it on Tubi. It's EXACTLY what Tubi is for. And I was entertained for 90 min. I give it a solid 5, tho I never was bored or took my eyes off the screen & the 5 stars are for the beyond humanly beautiful lead actor. This movie could have been twice as long and I'd watch it just because he really is that darn gorgeous. Malcolm? Well, you always know he is going to bring it in any role regardless of how stinky the film is. There's a tawdry bit of pleasure seeing him perform as if it's Shakespeare & not the direct to dvd dreck that it is. After a couple glasses of.wine and a Napien I'd easily watch this again.

What's not to love?
15 September 2022
Like Ragnarok, this Thor outing is yet again the comic book come to life on the silver screen. It's cheesy, it's corny, it's colorful, it's lighthearted & completely over the top...hey, it's Thor, baby. You want an Oscar caliber movie then go see The Dark Knight. This hits all the right notes. Chris as Thor is more jacked than ever. Jane as lady-Thor surprisingly worked for me. Christian did all he could w/a lame, generic villain. Tessa stole every scene she was in. So, Thor has 4 solo movies now...I better see Enchantress AND Beta Ray Bill next time! No excuses! Oh, great music choices as well.

It's a fun film
23 August 2022
IMDB never ceases to entertain me with people "critiquing" movies as if they are seasoned students of film working for Roger Ebert reviewing Academy Award nominated films;/ aka 'serious films'. Lighten up. This movie checks all the Netflix cinematography boxes. All of their big budget films pay huge salaries up front to get a-list stars because they will not get a % of ticket sales. So, they have to cut $ from production & the end result is very bright color saturation, cheap sets & even cheaper cgi effects. The movie reminded me of a beloved 80's movie of mine, Return Of the Living Dead. It's equal comedy & camp as it is horror & gore. Jamie & Dave do what they do best. It's nowhere near award level stuff but it is highly entertaining if you like this kind of genre. It's not the type if movie you critique however. Jeez louise.

It's pure fun thanks to mega-watt star power
2 August 2022
People seriously "reviewing" this are so absurd

From the opening it catches you and it's literally a fun 2 hour roller coaster ride. Ryan Gosling & Chris Evans show off their mega-watt star power albeit totally different ways, a 180 apart from one another. And plz...anyone w/a functional brain should know they are having fun with these roles. They are very aware this is pure entertainment. The story? Minimal to mon-existent and who cares?

I'm so beyond burned out on both DC (all over the place) & Marvel doing the same world ending, universe/multiverse chaos, too much craptastic CGI films over & over....only the culture changes. While it's great to have representation the movies are the same brightly colored film over & over. The Eternals dared to be different & I told myself "you'll hate it" boy was I wrong. The "villains" were generic cgi per usual but the diversity & the cinematography were original and a visual feast, w/Angelina being the weakest character. It wasn't Endgame but I also never checked my watch. The new Thor? Muscle Jane? Ugh. Give me Beta Ray Bill & Enchantress already! It's 4 films in already, more than any other MCEU stand alone character & still no Enchantress. You're lucky the public took to Cate as favorite comic villain Hela brought to life albeit a watered down version of her that Cate was able to elevate.

Back to Gray Man, here our nemesis assassins battle royale spans around the globe, Ryan does all the grunt work while Evans gets underlings to do his dirty work & the cinematography is beautiful and thankfully no Matrix-style fighting, we're pleasantly back to very well choreographed fight scenes.

When fun & movie star power come together for mindless but heckuva entertaining 2 hours. Save your heavy critique for Thor, Guardians Of the Galaxy, Aquaman 2 or Fast And Furious 27.

The Gray Man is if Tom Cruise and MI19 didn't take itself so seriously like it had a "you know what" shoved "you know where"

Blumhouse goes for Stranger Things & he struck out.
20 July 2022
Could not wait to see this. We haven't had a child serial killer movie since Nightmare On Elm St. I kept my expectations low...it's Blumhouse after all. Glad I did. The story was completely different than advertised and not in a good way. I have no idea who or what or why for Ethan Hawke's character. And his brither? WYH? Glad I watched it free on streaming.

Beauty (2022)
7/10
This is not about Whitney
30 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Put Whitney Houston far out of your mind...if you can.

A fantastic 90 minute film about the dynamics of a late 70's/early 80's working middle class Black family & how everyone in this family tries to find their way forward riding on the coattails as well as depending on the future success of their youngest child, Beauty, who seems to have it all, stunning beauty as well as drop dead in your tracks singing abilities. We never hear her sing & the creative team made a wise choice here because the story is very clearly based on Whitney Houston and...well, you cannot find anyone on earth to be able to match that voice. Take note there are no names for the principal characters. The mother who is immensely talented but who was denied a successful singing career & is both wary of the business and a little jealous at what her daughter is about to step into. She demands credit that Beauty only exists because of her. She also demands her children be on their best behavior, when she herself is clearly no saint (there's an excellent very subtle scene that has the minister of the family's church giving Mother the "look if lust " & she gives it right back...all while Father is silently noticing this exchange. The father, a domineering overbearing "man of the house" who often pits his 2 children with his wife's first child by another man. He's all front as he is as sleazy and as greedy as any hustler. A narcissist whose word is law and is the king of his castle lording over his subjects, his family. Then we have Jazz "Jazmine" Beauty's best friend & lover, her 'safe space' where she can be herself, which she doesn't even know what (or who) she is yet. By the end of the film Beauty is ready to explore her sexuality and sensually and Jazz is left waiting on the lonely sidelines. Finally we have perfectly cast Sharon Stone as the Colonizer, a powerful White record exec who can get Beauty on her label fast enough and only on her terms...meaning she wants her to be the next Diana Ross, but bigger. A Black female singer who appeals to everyone, meaning the Black community come second.

Everything was a feast to the eyes. The sets & decor, the cars and the clothing were gorgeous and sumptuous.

A fantastic representation of so many POC as well as Black lesbians, who, in this world being a Black woman is hard enough but to be a Black lesbian is, as we hear many times in the film "evil".

Further proof that humanity truly has no low that is too low
13 April 2022
8 hours of "peaked in high school pretty people" (some are genuinelly GL and some are far from it & r clueless, u can decide who is who on yer own) believing the lie that they tell themselves that they are adults who are having deep and profound conversations. IOW people who are too old to to be hammered 24/7 having "conversations" about "feelings". Reminded me of college days 18, 19, 20 tops when I'd be hammered and skiing high and thought I was so profound. How do these empty people pull this off with a straight face? This show makes The Bachelor look like Citizen Kane by comparison. A slow as a snail car crash that took itself seriously. The 2 nobody hosts aren't worth mentioning. Sorry not sorry.

Wait for the next series....
4 March 2022
....cuz this ain't the one. After reading several articles about Anna several years ago I was so excited for this show. I love the actress who plays Anna, Julia Garner, from her role on Ozark, the best dysfunctional family crime drama since Breaking Bad but Netflix is an iffy role of the dice. Sadly this was a bad roll and bad role. I saw Shondaland & I immediately felt my heart drop. Full disclosure: I cannot watch legacy network prime time any longer. Those are broadcast networks & w/all their rules & regulations & the fact that they have to please as many people as they can....along with we've come full circle and game shows and battle of the network stars/American gladiator types shows dominate. Just not my cup of tea. Bridgerton, like Grey's has never interested me. Her shows, just like Ryan Murthy's shows all have their own formula. Ryan mostly hits but does miss some. Even the miss shows I can watch. Shonda is the opposite. All of her shows are "lite" or "diet", they remind me of cheap (but camera sanitized clean & sparkly for the camera) productions. I DO NOT mind representation in the least. I do LOVE the fact that everyone gets to see themselves in the cast of Bridgerton and the people are pretty and the costumes lavish (but clearly made in-house on the cheap, same with the cheap "jewels"....) but it's still Suave shampoo pretending to be Nexxus...there are never wide, arcing shots or massive lavish filmed on location shots. Inventing Anna follows this same mold. Julia falls in and out of her Ozark accent & doesn't seem to notice, tho the director should. We have a shot of Paris and the Eiffel Tower and DUMBO Brooklyn, but we're clearly shooting in Canada. Bridgerton (tho I love the open sexuality and who cares about the color of a Duke's skin, it's not real & theyre actors) it still comes off cheap, poorly written & about as deep as a puddle on a sidewalk after a quickly passing summer rain cloud. It's Instagram TV. So is Ryan Murphy, I just happen to like his themes, horror, pulling the curtain back on Hollywood 2 reveal the Wizard is just a man, bringing EPIC actresses to really go full throttle on their scenes, think Jessica Lange, Angela Bassett, Kathy Bates & don't get me started on all the transgender actresses he hires...cuz they slay every part they're in. Inventing Anna, like all Shonda's shows is like a creamy peanut butter and wal-mart brand grape jelly on wal mart white sandwich bread. Now, a social media "influencer" can work that shizz into something fierce....for a PICTURE, not a tv show. For this story I was hoping for a Miami Cuban panini....or NYC cart sausage & peppers on a bun. No luck.

Revenge is so much sweeter when served cold
26 January 2022
Had never heard of this film until it popped up as a Netflix recommendation. I love Spike Lee & Josh Brolin so I went with it

The opening few minutes were immediately attention grabbing, watching Josh Brolin really bring this character alive. What a fu**ing performance. Brolin swing for the fences & hit a home run as we meet his character. Then...it did a hard right & was a different movie entirely. I mean a REALLY different movie. I had to stop it & read a little about it. It's a successful Korean film remade for American audiences by Lee. That gave me perspective & I stuck with it. Good thing.

Great story w/so many twists & turns. The critics hated it & I guess if u blinked in 2013 u missed the film, hence I never heard of it. It disappeared that fast. Don't watch it to "review" it. It requires suspension of disbelief....sometimes really stretching that suspension. But it's hella fun. Think if Saw and Kill Bill had a baby it might be this. The ending? It's worthy of Se7en. I gave nothing away with that, btw.

The less u know, the better. Just shut up & watch it.

If you thought it had aged badly before....
28 December 2021
In its day, SATC was just silly fun. Looking back now it has not stood the test of time. We now look back and see all of the god awful things these characters did and just wince at their actions. All In the Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons, 227, Maude, Golden Girls were all ahead of their time and are still watchable classic comedy shows. And just like that SJP & HBOmax give us a masterclass on how NOT to do 'woke' (a good thing) tv. How they lied & misled us. Carrie has not evolved at all, she is still as big a narcissist as ever, each scene is a standout for her to treat as a 90's supermodel 'cat-walk' (reminds me of Melanie Trump who was always more interested in the failed. Non-existent supermodel career her husband tries to convince us the hooker had. Miranda, my god, they are just dragging her character thru the NYC gutter sludge. Charlotte is still the same. The only one who has improved is Samantha Jones because she made the (very wise) move of staying away from this crap-tastic show. I'm only 24 minutes into the premiere & I know the spoilers. It's so bad and so cringe-worthy I can't NOT watch it. Every scene is a car crash moment that makes you cringe and wanna scream "noooooooo". It's like one gigantic "SNL does SATC in the 2020 era". No, it's not camp like, say Grease 2 (my always go-to camp classic that is bad but still over the top hella fun). The blame for this mess? SJP. Sorry gurl, you're the face of the show & your character is still acting like it's 1998 and as narcissistic as she ever was in all her tacky splendor. SATC was a zeitgeist moment, and you do not want to go back to that. Even Candace Bushnell, on whom the original show was based, was incredulous that HBOmax was doing this, basically saying she doesn't get why the facsination w/that show in this day and age. You want great, inclusive 'woke' show, watch Insecure, and just like that this show will go to it's grave.

Not every concentration camp movie has to be Schindler's List
27 December 2021
Found this on a streaming site & decided to give it a go. Thank god I did. It's a "small" film that tells a big story set in Auschwitz. I was hooked from the opening scene and sat spellbound for 90 minutes. The acting, directing, cinematography, set design are all spot on. I went in thinking this is a fictional story set in a real place, but at the end it says the events of the film are true. IDK if they are or aren't or the exact details are true or not. What I know is this is a moving film, with a simple story set within the confines of a literal he** on Earth. Proof you can tell a great story in 90 minutes. If you're looking at it & wondering if you should watch it....don't think, clear your mind, stay away from social media and for an hour and a half you will be witness to a powerful film.

Dramatization not a Documentary
21 December 2021
This is a dramatization factionalized story that is based around real events. You want facts, go watch the documentaries, there are several great ones.

This is a fantastic tale on American "capitalism". Great story, great acting & direction.

Again, this is fiction inspired by true events. If you can't separate the 2, this is not for you.

A movie that will be a classic in 20 years....Best film of 2021?
17 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I had low expectations for this film, as I, having grown up with the original movie having defined a genre that still runs runs full steam today.

I won't bother with you with meaningless personal comments. Everyone with a keyboard and internet access is a Roger Ebert these days. You know the old saying "Opinions are like....", IMDB is living proof.

Halloween Kills is finally the worthy and.needed sequel to the OG original. And just like the original it has redefined the genre. The easter eggs are everywhere, you will need 3-4 viewings to spot them all. Every film in the franchise is represented here. Even Halloween III, Season of the Witch, an overlooked suspense mystery that people wrote off because there was no Michael Myers. And therein lies the mistake after the first film. Hint: 1978's film was not about Michael Myers. That name & story is irrelevant. Hence he is listed in the credits as The Shape. The white mask, the shadows & dim-lighting, the sound of breathing, the unmasking of the killer after the opening murder...that horror lives everywhere, yes even in our small close knit communities where we leave our doors unlocked (then) and sleep safely in our beds with windows opening and curtains billowing and the more it is hidden the more it grows and the more chaos it can cause. Which leads us to Halloween Kills

Evil, hatred, anger, rage...and racism have been hiding in the shadows festering for decades with it's blank, faceless identity, much like a KKK hood is white and is without an identity, for far too long and it is back....bigger and badder and more destructive than ever. Almost like what is happening here and now in America and many other parts of the globe. Anger and hatred and racism and violence is now on a global scale. Personally, I have no problem with giving the film 10 stars. In a couple years we will see how right on the money this insta-classic slice of grand guignol was...just like it's elder brother.

This film will grow into something so much more that what 90% of the viewers saw. This is The Last House On the Left...Evil Dead...The Texas Chainsaw Massacre were & then became years down the road. I'll say the originals because in this day and age common sense & critical thinking are desperately starving.

P. S. Kyle Richards steals the film. Little Lindsey Wallace is back and she is ready to fight.

Jake makes the movie.
6 October 2021
The movie is really good; a simple taught thriller. I have not seen the original people compare it to & reading many reviews I almost wasn't going to watch this. I'm glad I ignored the reviews and went with my gut. Jake Gyllenhall (& Ryan Gosling) is an actor who is so great he elevates anything he is in. Plot? Good. Direction? Nice & tight. Voice actors do a great job. And Jake is an actor/movie star you can always count on to bring his A-game. It's a quick thriller that deserves your time.

For those who gave a low review because they don't believe...
22 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
You have read plenty of reviews and synopsis' of the film. I'm just here to add that those with questions, do you know how an internet search works? I too had lots of questions because the filmmaker chose to put a laser focus on the twins' story. Never did I not believe them, but, like most who viewed the film I too had questions. It took one Joogle search to find soooooo much more that completed the story. More about their actual financial situation, learning disabilities, their "father", lots more insight regarding the mother as well as 2 unmentioned younger siblings. I appreciate the style the filmmaker used here, but it does leave out necessary information for the viewer to get a complete picture. After reading what I found I was relieved (this still makes me uncomfortable) that the Lewis twins are telling the truth & that my confidence in Marcus opening up and revealing what happened wasn't misplaced. A brutally painful picture that society needs to be more open to. 4 children had their lives forever traumatized. Idk about the siblings, but it seems as if the Lewis men have made a nice life for themselves and their own families. That brought some solace to the sorrow I felt about them. I hope the younger 2 are doing as well as Alex & Marcus.

Oh, and regarding the reviewer who said a child alone in the 70's riding a subway (tube) would attract attention....that person has never been on a subway. He questions why a conductor wouldn't have seen them. No subway on Earth has a conductor. Just the driver, who is locked safe in a steel cage. I mean, a conductor!? On a subway!? Seriously? And I'll add, living in NYC, you go into subway mode when you go down to the platform, it's an automatic defense mechanism (apathy sadly). You don't look around, you don't make eye contact, you mind your business. No one (if there was even another rider in his car) would have spoken out. Children in large cities know how to use public transport alone. Do you think NYC has buses? No, most kids have a free student pass and take public transport to school.

The Djinn AKA The Monkey's Paw
22 May 2021
Beware what you wish for, it just might come true.

The drama queens are all over this. What do they expect, Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, Lawrence of Arabia.... The Exorcist? Unless you have the education of a potato you should know walking into this fun little flick what it's all about. There is really nothing to complain about here. It is what it is.

I don't need every movie to be 2 hours long. It's essentially 2 characters carrying the movie, I won't spill anymore. They are both set up well in the first 10 minutes. Of course we find out there is more to the story as time passes waiting for the last hour of the day. This isn't the kind of film that needs character development (just like Halloween didn't in 1978. It's fun but no it's not THAT good ). The young boy is fantastic, with a very expressive face (he needs it as he is a mute). It's a fun little cat & mouse game for an hour and a half of your time.

Watch for Georgia & the adults storyline. The kids? Cringeworthy. It's like a bunch of 30-something Hollywood white people got together and tried (way too hard) to write woke teen culture. Completely off the mark & utterly condescending. You want to see kids' culture today, watch Euphoria. I will say the show is entertaining....if all bright colors & fluff.

Review for seasons 1-3 only
13 April 2021
Just stop at after season 3. All the reviews are correct.

I found this show really late. I never thought it would appeal to me (yes, I'm more Marvel) but I decided to watch this after watching Zak Snyder's cut of Justice League & loved what Zak did with Cyborg & Flash (Snyder had a perfect cast...they still need to work on villains). This show did not disappoint!! Season one was INCREDIBLE. For a network show? Brilliant. I'd even dare say possibly the best ever comic tv show adaptation at its premiere. Now? I loved WandaVusion. Tho I don't think a network would have the guts to do that & Im waiting to binge Falcon &. Winter Soldier. But The Flash was solidly epic thru season 3. Stop there. Season for it's an off the rails runaway train heading for a cliff.

Lovecraft meets Lolita
10 April 2021
I feel like I need a shower. Terrible acting but the script is so god awful it makes SyFy or Hallmark movies look like Citizen Kane by comparison. Mena's acting skills & experience help her as much as they can. The guy is super sexy eye-candy but about as shallow as a mud puddle. There were far too many scenes of a handsome adult man and a teenage-looking actress with lots of implied sexual tension between the two. This movie was truly god awful but Netflix & their algorithms have convinced the public this "movie" is something worth watching. It isn't. And I'm a raging liberal. It takes A LOT to shock me, this movie had me feeling like I need a good long hot scrub with Comet cleanser. Just YUK!!!

Is A Disaster Movie With No Disasters Still A Disaster Movie?
2 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Produced by Gerard Butler explains a lot.

I LOVE bad disaster movies, running back to my childhood, from Earthquake to the Airport movies, Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, The Day After thru the 90's/2000's flicks Deep Impact, Armageddon, The Day After Tomorrow, 2012....I'd even argue Independence Day is a great disaster flick. This movie has none of what made those movies such fun, mindless entertainment. Basic premise is a comet is going to collide with Earth. Before the Big Bang itself, we're given a bunch of debris from the oncoming comet hitting the planet wrecking havoc. There are no epic scenes of global monuments being decimated. It's just asteroids hitting houses, cars & such. Even after Clarke, the comet, hits the planet we see nothing. We're in the bunkers with the survivors. A black screen. Seriously, the Earth is getting pummeled while we see a BLACK SCREEN!!!! Quick flashes of London, Rome, Paris, are flashed, blink & u will miss them. Just a very quick picture to show us, no film. Monuments wrecked but in tact enough we can still recognize them.

The film is about a family of three, b-grade Russell Crowe stand in Gerard Butler, as fat and haggard as ever. Seriously, he has partied hard. For comparison see him in this vs Timeline 20 yrs ago when he was as handsome and charismatic as Paul Walker. Booze, drugs and a Johnny Depp lifestyle have ruined him. Of course his wife (Deadpool's gf/wife) is stunning & gorgeous. Thin, not a line on her face, even with the planet being space bombed she could walk a NY fashion show runway, and her son. The 3 are mysteriously chosen by the government to be saved, we're never told why the people chosen are deemed worthy to live. The movie is then a road flick as they get separated and fight to get back to one another in the hope of catching a civilian flight from Canada to Greenland & the bunkers.

Hey, I love a mindless movie of fun images to massive tsunami's, aliens blowing up the Empire State Bldg & White House, cruise ships overturned, etc....this has nothing close to that.

So overhyped
29 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I wanted to love this like I did the first one. This one was a total turkey. Cheetah? Lame. Max Lord even worse. Wonder Woman is a demigod, she can go toe to toe with Superman & her Golden armor makes her even more powerful, yet she's lassoing thugs in a mall like spider man. 2020 has been such a terrible year, but make no mistake, this film is a miss being marketed as THE feel good film we all need. Oh Diana Prince, u deserved SO much better. The cameo at the end was definitely the best thing in this.

I figured I was gonna like it but it was even better than I was expecting. When Lil Dicky busts that flow at the end of ep 1, I was NOT prepared for that. I slept on Ramy til I saw he got a Golden Globe. That show blew me away so I was not gonna miss Dave, which'll tie me over til Ramy season 2. Now, I just need Atlanta back. The golden era of TV continues while cinema continues to circle the drain.
