Dark Passage (1947)
Most underrated Bogart film and Best Bogey & Bacall pairing
This has to be the most underappreciated Bogart movie. Other than Casablanca, I really can't think of a film that I like better.
As for these 2 as a team, I again think that this is their best. Key Largo was probably my 2nd with the delightfully confusing The Big Sleep coming in 3rd. Bacall is off the charts sexy in To Have and Have Not, but the movie itself was pretty mediocre. All the Bogie & Bacall movies are excellent, but this one is the best combo of story, suspense, atmosphere, romance and most of all acting.
EVERYONE is great in it.
Of course the 2 stars display their usual chemistry, but the supporting cast is incredible.
Starting with "The Pest" Agnes Moorehead, the incredibly slimy Clifton Young (who out-Dan Duryea's Duryea himself) and the always steady Bruce Bennett. Even the bit-players are perfect in their casting and performance: Tom D'Andrea as the helpful cabbie, Housely Stevenson as the plastic, to even Doug Kennedy as the detective, Tom Faddan as the Diner counter-guy and Len Breman as the Bus Station clerk.
As for Bacall, while I have seen her look as good if not better in other films, check out the shots of her tearfully saying "goodbye" to Bogart on the phone as they plan to someday meet in South America. She's so stunningly beautiful in that shot that it hurts.
I read the David Goodis novel as well, and it was excellent. As a matter of fact you can't read the book without imagining anyone else in most of the roles. Bogart and Bacall (oddly enough) yes, but the supporting cast? You just can't read the book a 'see' anyone else in your mind's eye than that cast!
Saints and Soldiers: The Void (2014)
Good Flix; Clearly low budget, but worth seeing--- even if you pay $3.99
I do agree that it's on the "preachy" side though, not over the top.
BTW: I know that it's an old post (2014) but the review by agedapocolypse... or whatever his name is, is preposterous.
The 1903 Springfield was hardly known outside of the Marines past 1943 and this film took place in last days of the ETO -- April 1945. The 1903 would have only be used as a snipers rifle by then.
As for the Panther comment, this guy's again shows that he's a legend in his own mind in the this is not a Panther (Mk V) old PZKW III and was rightly explained as being from a tank school since Panzer Mk III were removed from front-line service or converted to other vehicles (SPG's, Stug's or panzerjagers) by 1944)
The movie is correct is this explanation.
