Small Engine Repair (2021)
Toxic machismo
This film immediately raised my brow when I saw the trailer since I was born & raised in the Merrimack Valley of MA/NH. Unfortunately that's also where I really should've ended my curiosity.
John Pollono's Small Engine Repair is no doubt a passion project. And it is commendable, but unfortunately it is severely flawed. There is a lot of backstory I guess I kinda wanted but never got, missing character development, overacting, strange humor, no suspension of disbelief, etc...
Where a story of blue collar revenge could have navigated wound up being a PSA about the dangers of social media and with an ending that felt settled & made up on the spot. A pretty disappointing film.
Mean Man: The Story of Chris Holmes (2021)
Nothing Gained, Everything Lost...
Sub-average Doc on a man who's more infamous for chugging a bottle of vodka in a swimming pool during the 'Decline of Western Civilization Part II - The Metal Years' than he is for playing guitar in W. A. S. P..
At one time, documentaries were more about the stories that deserved them and not as a marketing tool of sympathy for those who signed bad deals, have personal demons, didn't have the staying power or basically screwed it up themselves. These docs are a dime-a-dozen these days since the success of 'Anvil: The Story of Anvil' with copious artists & bands jumping on the bandwagon. Alcohol and drug problems, 6 DUI's, relocating to a foreign country where you & your wife move in with her parents, not even attempting to learn the language and "singing" & playing because you are forced to do it doesn't exactly document a story of success.
Stunt Rock (1978)
Sorcery!
Wow! What a find! The BEST/WORST, MOST AWESOMEST FILM EVER! Where else could you combine stunts with the power of ROCK? A fantastic, perfect for a "late night weekend" flick. Intentionally hilarious in so many ways.
Donald Cried (2016)
Cringeworthy...
Highly enjoyable, hilarious & extremely uncomfortable film at times. Jesse Wakeman and ESPECIALLY Kris Avedisian (aka, writer/director/Donald/old classmate of my drummer's) absolutely knock it out of the park. A new New England gem. Bravo!
