Chaos Walking (2021)
Good, but lacking depth
I found out recently that the movie is based on a trilogy of books. In the first book, there is a line that reads, "The Noise is a man unfiltered, and without a filter, a man is just chaos walking."
I really wish they could have portrayed it better in the movie.
They obviously can't since it would probably be a noise-filled mess, however people's minds are VERY loud, very fast, very full of thoughts, and the movie is pretty selective on when people's thoughts are heard and when they aren't. I understand there are a few who have mastered their thoughts, so to speak, but it still doesn't account for the overall unrealistic pauses and silences when there should be noise.
I think if it's a trilogy of books, they probably could have done a film trilogy as well. The characters lack depth and we don't spend much time getting to know anyone, or really becoming attached to anyone or anything at all in the film.
While it's pretty-looking, I find it was a bit empty and unmemorable overall.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
What I remember is great.
This is one of those movies that doesn't make sense until you're older.
I grew up with so many references and nods to Shawshank in pop-culture, that I thought I knew what it was all about, and never really bothered to sit down and watch it, until I was older & got into that weird 'watch all the most iconic films ever' phase.
The Library stuff was a shot to the heart, I was a library kid growing up, so it was really engaging as a storyline. The beers on the roof part was such good storytelling as well, it made the viewer feel the satisfaction of small victories, and simple pleasures after hard work....it reminded me of reading a book.
It was a poetic movie... old-school, but unmistakably classic... majestic writing....believable dialogue, heartfelt & eager acting from the people on-screen... the whole thing is just a really great culmination of Art Realized.
Girl Lost: A Hollywood Story (2020)
What was the Point?
I often go into these 'BEWARE THE SEX TRADE' movies with a heavy dose of salt, fully expecting them to be, not only downright insulting, but also extremely exploitative.
This film, not twenty minutes in, blew me away with the absolute, shockingly over-the top dialogue, the vapid nature of the script, the complete lack of realism or any sort of tact or grace for the subject matter, the absurdity & entire lack of respect, BY THE DIRECTOR, for the protagonists, or any of the other characters at all....I mean, really, I could go on and on.
I couldn't fully watch through, I fast-forwarded and skipped my way past moment after moment of tasteless, awkward, gaudy scenes....this film seems more like it was written to fulfill some sort of perverted nightmare....some dark, fetish-fueled cinematic thill...this seems like a film created in the middle of a suburban neighborhood... sexually-charged, deliberately provocative, dreamt up by insidious, creepy, strangely unnerving people.
It was icky.
It was not a good portrayal of ANYTHING remotely realistic.
Nothing but mongering and tropes.
Gave it a two because at least it's got decently nice-looking camera quality, and good lighting, I guess.
Natalie Palamides: Nate - A One Man Show (2020)
Raw, Unfiltered, Pure Comedy
I haven't been slapped in the face with this kind of comedy in years.
If you don't like Kaufman, you won't like this.
If you love the purist form of absurdist crap that leaves you uncomfortable, feeling sorry for the audience, and laughing till you soil yourself, then strap on in.
I need an entire series.
I want a collab with GWAR.
I can't wait to see more from N.P, because WHAT A GENIUS, HOLY MOLY.
Not only was this show hilarious, but it also has a pretty solid moral lesson for us all............just axe.
Unknown Visitor (2019)
not bad, pretty decent
I am really damn embarrassed at how loudly i screamed when that freakin eyeball-face showed up lordt god, havent screamed like that since the ring & blair witch lmao I was expecting this to be awful & to turn it off immediately, but I didn't and now I'm freaked out at everything right now hahah good job, would recommend if you like simple, easy horror.
