Jurassic World Dominion (2022)
Just didn't work
I mean, I get how cool "dinosaurs in a car chase in a city" sounded but it just didn't work. There were a lot of places where I could tell the director thought I would be overjoyed with nostalgia but nothing felt earned. I thought Chris Pratt barely got the raptors he trained for years to stop with his magic had motion but suddenly it works in every dinosaur on planet earth?
The story was so weak I'm surprised anyone thought it was worth making. Oh wait, no I'm not, it seems like executives heard nostalgia and thought "nostalgia equals money and we love money." Well, I like good stories. Too bad you didn't try for that.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
I didn't leave the theater mad, but I left very disappointed
So I think alone this movie is good. You could probably chop this story up and make it three movies with a great rise fall and conclusion. But it's not a trilogy. It's the last movie in one. They embark on a movie that has a totally different plot and direction than the first two movies in the trilogy and just hope everyone loves it because it's Star Wars. Again, I thought this movie is fine. It felt like if you were watching the original trilogy and at the beginning of the ROTJ the crawl said "Darth Malak has returned and now Darth Vader and Luke hunt for answers" and instead of a conclusion to the story you were building up to you get another one that by all means sounds cool but wouldn't be as satisfying as the one that was planned. It seems like a hollow victory. Yay! We won but ... what did we win? The emperor came back, which was introduced in a commercial and then that was the plot for the entire movie. It felt like damage control, and as a person that HATES the Last Jedi, I felt disappointed. I'm glad they listened to the fans because whether you like it or not, those hardcore fans people love complaining about are the reason why Star Wars is still here. Their voices SHOULD be heard. But the problem was is that Disney let Rian Johnson change fundamental parts of the story they were going to tell and when JJ got his hands on it the only option was to embark on a new story. All in all, I didn't leave the theater mad, but I left very disappointed.
My Brother, My Brother and Me (2017)
I wish they'd make more
If you are a MBMBAM fan then you will love this. Aside from that, if you like slightly awkward comedy and some wholesome goofs then you'll like this as well. I wish they'd make more, I honestly laughed pretty damn hard when they got momentum going.
Ugly Delicious (2018)
Mixed message
I guess my complaint can be highlighted by two episodes:
The first is about pizza. It frames the series showing us what is perfect about pizza, what a risk taker can do with pizza, what a perfectionist can do with pizza and what a corporation can do with pizza. It shows how even the Americanized version Domino's makes has some value because of a connection to our childhood or maybe just events in our life. How some food can be ugly and delicious, there's value in all cuisine and you shouldn't look down your nose at something just because you can order it on an app.
The second is the episode about Chinese food. It is a celebration of Chinese food and Asian culture. It puts down, and puts down hard, American Chinese food and highlights the reason why Chinese food will never be big here: It has to be eaten by white mouths. They highlight why Chinese food is the way it is over here (a lot of oppression and immigration bans) and tells the tale of a ruined art. Now, I understand that there is anger there because Chinese food is delicious and they want it represented over here but it doesn't fit with the statement made in the first episode.
I guess I didn't like it because it didn't fit tonally. It turned into a celebration of Asian cuisine, which is awesome, but it strayed away from what I took as the message of the series: not all food has to be pretty, not all food has to be perfect. I think if it just wanted to be a show about Asian cuisine you should just call it Delicious and go nuts. I'd watch that show.
