The Night Manager (2016)
A very cliché story of the solitary hero against the bad guys
A very lavish production like The Night Manager should have done a serious effort and try to go beyond the usual Bondesque hero-vs.-ruthless-baddie and rescue-the-girl story. The beautiful cinematography and the exotic locations don't save the show from sounding so untrue for most of the time. It is a pity that a great actor like Hugh Laurie ends up with such a cliché villain. And Tom Hiddleston's character is particularly unconvincing, I'm afraid, though he tries his best to make it appealing. It would have been a great show in 1965.
The Crown (2016)
Period drama at its best
The Crown is a real pleasure to watch. A production with such a refined attention to details and with such a perfect cast is almost unique. It is not particularly lavish, but it really succeeds in creating the atmosphere of the time. The characters sounds true, though we all know there is much fiction in the show together with real facts and events, but everything makes a sense. It is not a documentary, it is period drama at its best, beautifully made and really entertaining.
The Shape of Water (2017)
A beautiful poetic story
The Shape of Water is a film that needs time to fascinate you. I kept asking myself whether I liked it or not for about one third of its length. I loved the cinematography, I was fascinated by the main character, though she reminded me a bit too much of Amélie, I liked some supporting actors very much. But I was not sure I loved the whole. But yes, in the end the story is beautiful and poetically told. And some scenes of this film will stay in my memory forever.
McMafia (2018)
TV show at its best
A GREAT tv show! The plot is obviously complex, but absolutely intriguing and well developed, with a large number of themes connected to the most topical reality. The choice of casting great actors from many countries, all speaking their native languages, makes the whole production sound so true - no weird accents, the best international talents reunited in one show! The two main rival characters, Alex and Vadim, are so interesting and out of every cliché, both nuanced and morally ambiguous: there is no hero and no villain here, only the complicated and ruthless relationships between finance and crime in a globalised world. For me, McMafia is one of the most interesting shows I have seen in the last years.
