Travel Man: 48 Hours in... (2015)
We watched it, but should we have?
A few minutes into watching Travel Man I dismissed it as yet another travel show hosted by a pretentious Brit, but after 10-15 minutes I realized, wait, this is something different. As much as I love travel (who doesn't) I typically find myself bored with travel shows. Here, I actually appreciate Richard's dry sense of humor, quirkiness, and deep trove of facts. And although some celebrity guests are better than others I found myself binge watching the entire series. It's not the best TV, but certainly not the worst ... give it shot, you might be surprised.
The Serpent (2021)
The Slug
When I first heard about The Serpent, I was pumped. The story and look and feel had me expecting something along the lines of a typical Tarantino or Scorsese flick, but instead I found myself watching a movie that felt flat, and lacked emotion and excitement. I thought The Serpent would be fast-paced, instead I get The Slug - slow and boring.
There's so much flip flopping between timelines it's hard to keep up unless you really pay attention, and I'm guessing it was done to make the story interesting. This movie would've been much better as a documentary as the main character's story is rather interesting.
21 Bridges (2019)
Not bad, just not great
Imagine a mash-up of a DC movie (but with no super hero) and a true crime drama like The Town. Although very good, there was something about the cinematography that made me think the Batman's Tumbler was going to jump into the chase scenes, maybe because it was filmed in NYC in the dark or the many overhead shots, I'm not sure.
The movie as a whole was incredibly predictable, and the idea of a one super cop taking down not only the criminals, but the corrupt PD has been done far too many times. Taking down all the bad guys seemed about as quick and easy as eating a donut. As for the characters, Bozeman and Simmons were both great, but I found Miller's character to be dreadful and unnecessary. Too bad the two guys with the BMW didn't have larger roles, they were the most interesting of the bunch with their back story, which just fizzled away.
Lastly the movie is quite short, maybe a good thing, but probably because there was nothing else to work with story-wise. Not a bad movie to watch once, but once is enough.
Fair Game (2010)
As bad as the "other" Fair Game
Naomi Watts, surrounded by a cast of overacting individuals - Penn included - was the only reason I hung in there for 30 minutes, but her strong character wasn't enough. Was that nonsensical debate in the beginning about hockey between Watts and the obnoxious guy eating those nuts supposed to pull a viewer in? Must've been, because nothing else piqued my interest except the location shots, which fizzled too as characters seemingly jumped from one country to the other so quickly it was obvious the film crew was not in all those locations.
Midsommar (2019)
Crazy and Weird
While watching the movie I kept thinking "this is disturbing as it is slow and I can't wait until it's over." However, once the movie finished my opinion changed, I began to appreciate what I had seen which was a movie perhaps created to give you the feeling of what it would actually be like to witness a cult gathering, which of course would be horrifying. Although the movie was predictable in parts, I did appreciate the angle used of having people with issues (Dani and her boyfriend) being prime candidates for a cult. I also appreciated how a movie filmed in the daylight could be so dark. While it wasn't the worst movie I've seen I can't say I'd want to watch it a second time either.
