Tár (2022)
A slow build for sure
I had no idea what to expect from this movie. I knew so little, that as the movie unfolded, I actually looked up Lydia Tar because I thought she was a real person! I thought Cate Blanchett was terrific in this role. With all of the classical music talk in the beginning, I felt like I was watching a movie in another language but with no subtitles. Cate sounded so natural speaking that lingo. She deserves the Oscar nomination for this role. The movie is definitely a slow build, it will move too slowly for some but I found it interesting. It definitely left me wanting more of what exactly transpired between Lydia & all the other women especially the one that committed suicide. It's a movie that is all about the character study of a powerful person... who is not what they appear to be at all. If you like that kind of movie, you'll like it. Cate Blanchett is a master in this role.
Elvis Presley: The Searcher (2018)
Great look at Elvis' career
I have never been some huge Elvis fan, I haven't known that much about him, other than the basic stuff we all know. I sat down & watched this documentary & it really opened my eyes to his talents as a true breakthrough history making musical artist. If you're looking for a deep dive into
Elvis's personal life, you won't get it here. This is more of an exploration of his career & how he got to where he did. I think it's a great film. I never realized how great a vocalist he was. I also never realized what a true artist he was. This documentary definitely shows how his terrible movie career in the 60s derailed him from being a bigger musical genius than he has ever gotten credit for. I found this film to be fascinating & eye-opening & I love all of the old footage & pics in the movie.
Elvis (2022)
Awful
This movie is horrible. It's like one big cliche... the dialogue is cliche, the scenes, the acting.., other than Austin Butler.
Other reviewers who have said it's like watching a cartoon are correct or the very old Batman TV series.... Correct. It's just an awful piece of filmmaking... like a bunch of disjointed scenes put together... interspersed in one big super long music videos. In fact, this movie is a disservice to music videos... I've seen better.
It's like the director wanted to put every part of Elvis' life in the movie so he did & it is a mish mash horrible film.
I will say, though, that Austin Butler is great... great! He could have been even better if this wasn't such a bad movie.
As for Tom Hanks... as good as Austin Butler is... Tom Hanks is that bad. His accent sounds like Dr. Now from My 600-lb Life. Horrible.
Skip this garbage.
The Godfather Part III (1990)
A bad movie killed by bad acting & writing
First off, we could probably all agree that there was no way this movie was going to live up to its predecessors... two of the greatest films in history. With that said, I wish it wasn't so bad.
The plot is actually pretty good... bottom line, the Corleone family is finally on the precipice of truly going "legitimate." But complications arise & of course, Michael's past ruthlessness & reputation also get in the way.
I think what really bothers me is some of the awful acting & dialogue. First of all, I still think Pacino is great as well as Keaton & Talia Shire. But what the heck happened to Joe Mantegna? He is such a bad Italian caricature in this film. He is a better actor than the amateur work he displays in this movie. Andy Garcia is not much better. & she was criticized then & rightly so... Sofia Coppola is just awful. Thank goodness she is now a fine director... she did the right thing & went behind the camera.
Of course, some of the dialogue may be the problem. Talk about amateurish & some just plain bad... it's a miracle anyone could do a good job acting with some of those lines.
The part that really bugs me.... The romance between first cousins... Michael's daughter & nephew... seriously??? I'm sorry but I come from a huge Italian extended family & first cousins don't have love affairs. Just stupid stupid stupid. & it means more of Sophia Coppola's horrid acting. & she & Andy Garcia might be the most terrible, most stiff, worst couples when they act together. It's like she makes him worse. Ugh, I despise their work & this plot line.
It could have been better... should have been better. But the movie that it is is not very good.
Staying Alive (1983)
Bad
If you're looking for great content, skip this putrid sequel to the classic, Saturday Night Fever. But if you'd like to drool over John Travolta in the 80's... the perfectly coiffed mullet, the perfect six o'clock shadow on his face, the great rockin' body he had, then you've come to the right place.
But the movie is just bad. The music is dated, the story is lame, acting is weak. Yes, the dancing is fun to watch but it can't carry this bad movie.
It seems laughable at times especially the scenes of the dance show at the end with its slow motion shots. Again, the only thing it's good for is to show off Travolta's stellar body.
Deep Water (2022)
Horrible.
This is one awful movie. I got so tired of nothing happening that maybe about 30 minutes in, I started fast forwarding to see if anything interesting happened. I don't know & I don't care.
I think Ben Affleck is a really good actor, better than he gets credit for. But starring in an awful flick like this gives no credibility as an scot or filmmaker in general.
It's a mystery to me as to why he even chose to star in this movie.
It's so bad that I didn't care at all what happened to any of these characters. They are not likable or sympathetic, they elicited no interest in me that made me care about what happened to them or to the plot... wait, what plot?
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Spielberg Should Be Embarrassed
I remember back in the day when they came out, I loved the Indians Jones movies. I still consider Raiders of the Lost Ark one of the all time great classics. I didn't remember much about this movie, Temple of Doom, except I remember it being very long & I remember not liking it.
Maybe I should have kept it in the past. I recently watched it again & it was worse than I remember. It's an awful awful movie. Horrible plot, terrible sidekicks in Kate Capshaw & the little kid that hangs with Indy. I mean, talk about bad acting from Kate... nothing but screeching stupidity.
I felt like I was watching a movie for kids... just bad bad bad.... Bad plot, bad acting & talk about long. It is insufferable how long it goes on & on & on! It felt longer than I remember. The only thing worth a crap in this movie is getting to see a young Harrison Ford shirtless. Other than that, don't bother with this.
Bullet Train (2022)
Loved it!
I loved this movie. Very Quentin Tarantino like but even though there is a lot of blood & violence, it didn't bother me. The movie has a fun tone to it, which is contradictory to say since it is so violent. But it's funny & I love the characters & I think it's a great story. Very fast paced. & Brad Pitt is at his most funny & most charming in this flick.
