Den blomstertid nu kommer (2018)
When war came to Sweden with Russian fear in the movie world
This Swedish film is about a potental war coming to a country like Sweden, with no history of actual war for a long time. So now suddenly one day people wake up to a situation of war. What happens to you when war comes to your country? What about all the unresolved issues you had before the war started, what does it do to you? Do you seek revenge, or do you become a samaritian to people with all unresolved issues? This film investigates what can happen to people. What parts or our personalities shine threw? It also shows us how the state ignores warnings and that they understand too late that something is happening and suddenly the country is at war with fearless Russians, clouded by greed.
It is a bit simplified that they took Russia as the enemy. Somehow there is a critic in that choice, that perhaps we should be coorperative with Russians, because they do have the power? Or is it simply a propaganda-film for those that are pro-army? Either way, both angels are found in this movie.
So jump on a story about Östergötland and Stockholm and what happens to the people in a modern society that suddenly are caught in a war scenario... what do you do?
The story tries to get a lot of angels and my companion at the movies thought it spoils part of the red thread in the movie. I think the many angels make it interesting, but of course, focus is somewhat lost on detours, you have to keep the story inside your own thoughts... Well, it is a movie well worth seeing and I give it a passing grade.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Maze runner Death Cure - mixes genders and ethnicity
This time the Maze runner crew wants to break into the city behind big walls. The team is still consistent of mostly young beautiful people, of different etnic looks and genders, yet a middle age man makes his way there too. The age groups are not that diversified in the team that lives outside the city amoung the main characters.
This time we get to see how the group wants to free some that have been captured. They want the person free. They do a semi successful prison transport break, but they get the wrong individual, therfore the quest to break into the city sets off. We get to follow their way there. We get to see zoombies and the apocalypse feel is there. As usual it is with the element of mad scientist's and high tech & people clouded by greed.
I found the film good when seeing it, but when trying to do a review I really don't see how. It is a prison break movie really, set in the fictive future of a dystopia. They tried to make it gender equal, but not age equal, even though there are "older" people, but the beautiful young people are many and in focus most of the time, compared to some middle age people. So who does this film attract? Maybe people that like Maze Runner type of films. People who like science fiction and dystopia that takes place on Earth.
Well, see it, it kept me the edge the whole hours it ran. It most likely doesn't bore the audience, since the pace is rapid. Expect death, failiure and other things to, not everything is golden, after all this episode is named Maze Runner Death Cure... see it if you must.
Black Panther (2018)
African star wars
I did do a twitter campaign one year and it seems that now some film makers are doing what I had hoped for, merged Africa with Hollywood. Black Panther integrates effectively the African continent into the science fiction genre. We get a version of the African star wars.
The manuscript has integrated values and feministic critic towards ideals about females and how to dress, actually they give another point of view of what not to wear, so in fact this is lovely, since the Hollywood stereotypes need some critic. We are more values than one on this planet and it is fresh to see that other values can be given space in a movie. Also the females are strong African women, they are also diversified, since there are different versions of their personalities. A princess a little bit rebellious, technological and scientific, which is awesome. Females in other roles than the regular. Breaking new frontiers, just as Star trek. So perhaps my header is wrong... maybe this is more of a African Star Trek, than an African Star Wars? Well, I wouldn't say that, but they do the same with norm critic as the Next generation Start trek does. But this is a fighting movie, with cool ships, advanced technology and such, which is more like Star wars.
The designs in this movie feel like a modern Africa, so give new technology to Africa and this is a possible outcome really. So the designs feel really African and somehow the old traditions are integrated into this movie, just as old traditions also have merged into Star Wars. Therefor this movie has more common ground with Star Wars than Star Trek really. This is indeed the African version. Also Western history and present is in question in this movie, we get some norm critic integrated into the movie. Some norm critic where really punches to the people that placed people in races, whites vs. black's in history, even today.
Africa is no longer a third world country in this movie, they are more advanced, but their traditions hinder them from taking over the world, they want to have better values, so they simply hide their possibilities from the rest of the world. Indirect his could be a allergory for African culture having so much good values, like being kind, loving and close to nature in many ways, and people don't really see it. The values are given space in this film. Which I think is good and we are given a perspective for a bad guys life experiences, so that we better can understand why the person ended up hateful. Of course the message in the end is to give love. That the solution is to communicate and love each other.
If you like science fiction, in the Star wars category, then this is the film for you. They make bad jokes, just as the real Star wars. But it is all twisted up in other values really. You'll understand once you see the movie. So enjoy Africas step up in Hollywood, from the stereotype roles as poor and full of primitive ideas to the advanced plattform of science fiction. No more blood thirsty pirates from African continent, not a first glampse anyway... can't say more than that without spoiling the movie. So enjoy African science fiction, dear reader.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Investigate humanities ego-tripping psyche in a zombie movie
I believe this is the best zombie film I've seen so far. It is not overdone, like so many of the big screen zombie films are. There is some kind of outbreak at a facility and people are evacuated. During the outbreak day a girl is going to visit her mother in another place. To reach the destination she has to take the train to Busan. This trip turns out differently than expected. During their trip there is a outbreak of a zombie sickness. People simply turn into zombies and try to eat non infected people. This outbreak also happens on the train. How will they handle it? Is there any way to survive this train trip and reach the destination? There is a lot of blood and splatter and if you are a sensitive person this is not a film for you. But if you adore zombie movies, this is one of the better ones. It is not overcooked, no this production is just right. It is enough of everything. Somehow this movie also investigates how far you are willing to go for your self interests. Are you willing to help other's on your way? Or are you ego, just doing what benefits you, even if that means other people dying? Somehow this is about how we people turn on each other in crises. So who are you, the good samaritan or the self-centered asshole? Well, I guess Train to Busan just puts all these things on display. You might even learn something about humanity watching this zombie movie. Interesting right? It's well worth seeing this movie. Sit down, be on the edge for a while. The grade is a grade set where I compare it with other zombie movies.
Colossal (2016)
A film that investigates the ripple affect of your own actions in a sci-fi mode
A movie about the kinetic abilities in question. Imagine going innocently into a playground – doing some moves and realizing a monster on the other side of the ocean does the same moves as you? Freaky? Perhaps. This is what a girl realizes. She connects her moves to a monster appearing on the news in another country and she set out to investigate
how is this even possible? The movie investigates the kinetic world, about the things we cannot explain. What would you do if you had abilities above the known? Surrender or try to change the outcome? Well. Take a journey into your own personality and see where it takes you. This movie somehow touches the things we have to do to set things right. Sometimes those decisions are not the easiest to make. What if, what you do, here and now, has an outcome somewhere else? What would it take for you to take those steps to find out? Well. This is a light sci-fi, set right here on Earth. It is a light film and I don't think it's scary, so it works for the allowed age groups just fine. It's a nice entertainment film, perfect for a night home.
War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
There are Apes, humans, apes fighting with humans & primitive humans... that perhaps have gotten some of the merciful apes within
I wasn't planning on seeing this movie, so I didn't expect anything in advance. I've seen the two other episodes. Well. The movie starts of with a war scene, where the humans attack the apes. Many apes die, as well as humans. The scene is like a reference to the Vietnam war, that the Americans are the ones that attack
but just as the Viet Cong
the apes got off the battle, but lost too many. If you have seen the other two episodes you will recognize the scenes, they are pretty much similar.
Something happens. That changes Ceasar, the apes leader, he changes from merciful to be blinded by hate by forces of nature, but at the same time he still has some mercy left inside. The movie continues. Now we jump a bit into the movie, there I saw the references to Nazi-Germany and a charismatic leader, even the North Korean leader Kim came into my mind when the Colonel stood up there on the balcony. The flags hanging, just as Nazi Germany, but it was the American version. So they didn't say "Heil" but they could as likely have done that. Colonel was then portrayed as a ISIS-leader, but as a Nazi-leader, ruthless to his own kind for his purpose. Killing for what he believes a good cause. Then the apes. They are portrayed as the slaved black people, as well as the people in concentration camps during world war 2, but this time as smart as the Viet Cong, but no better than the slaves ISIS are keeping really. So with the feeling of the black people as apes, of course there must be a black Nelson Mandela reference in it all. A slogan in style with "Apes together strong", holding their fist's above their heads. They changed Nelson's famous portrait where he holds his fist above his head to two fists above their head. Since I don't wanna spoil the rest of the movie, I let it be here.
This movie reminds me of Apartheid regime, of species wanting to look at the world with "we and them". So what was the point of this movie? That ISIS is not better than Nazis? Isn't it strange, felt like I already wrote that at one point about a Swedish television series once
Well. Anyway, the movie gives a hint that perhaps we need to be more primitive in a way so we don't want war
and have more heart and mercy for each other? Who knows? I have no idea. But the script seems to have looked at history and present time and made those stories to apes and humans
of different kind.
I give the movie a passing grade. It's not the best movie on this planet of humans, since the stranger sitting next to me kept on watching at his bright annoying watch a couple of times
every now and then, until I suggested he shouldn't be so stressed. With that said, perhaps some think the movie is a bit slow and perhaps they could cut out some more to make it less "slow". But it is a entertaining movie for others, so see it if you must. See history and present time in allegory and try to find the Prison break references yourself...
En man som heter Ove (2015)
A special man with his own personality
This is a funny movie, perhaps it is tragic comedy somehow. The story is about a man that has a life full of bad events outside his control. When he is really young his mother dies and he is left alone with his father. So he grows up with his father. It seems as they only talk cars and not much more, but his father says that it is the only thing he needs to know in order to get by. In a way that seems more right, considering the outcome of his life events. You will understand it, when you see the film. Anyway, this movie really starts off when Ove is a older man living on his own. He looses his job and his life takes another turn. But on this way we get to see flashbacks to the life Ove has lived. The flashbacks make us understand Ove a bit more. I would consider it as Ove had a hard life, but he seems to have adapted to circumstances. He has also been good in accomplishments, when he has set a goal. You will understand that too, if you see the movie. I laughed a lot in this film, then at times it was tragic and there was nothing to really laugh about. It is about life, both joy and sadness and how you as a person can handle it. We are all different. Ove has his routines and we could say he likes routines. Every week he visits his wife's grave and talks to her. He tells her what is going on, as if she was still alive. I consider Ove a simple man, he likes his routines. Who doesn't? Ove is no different from other's that like routines. But then a new family moves in to the neighboring house and Ove's routines are changed. So what happens when Ove's routines change? Is it changing differently than all other strange events in his life? Well Ove is a interesting man. I would say a strong man, a man that adapts to the circumstances given. I like this routine-like movie with comedy and sorrow. It is a about a possible life, a life that someone could have. Ove is a unique person, who dares to be himself. I wish you do too. If you want to enjoy a good story in happiness and tears, then perhaps A man named Ove could help you with that? The part of Ove is well played, the actor seems like he is Ove himself. He makes laughter and convinces the viewer he is "Ove", even though it is all just fiction. It is not an action, it is not a drama, even though this tragedy contains drama too. It has a melancholic feel to it, but yet enjoyable with the possibility to bring laughter to those small moments of joy.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Ghost in a Shell takes us to a city with Bladerunner feel spiced with the Borg ideas, all wrapped up in anime legacy
I expected a sci-fi sitting down in that chair at the movies. I didn't know the anime heritage, until after the movie, when the person, next in the seat to me, told me that the movie was based on a anime with the same name. The person recommended that I see the anime. I haven't, but here is the review. The film has some Bladerunner feel to the design of the city they are in. The city has the same colors, the same darkness and the same technological noise and flickering really. There is also one Borg moment for the Star Trek fans, when the Major hibernates in Major's apartment. The Major is the lead character, played by Scarlett Johansson. Also Alan Walker's video "Sing me to sleep" has the same feel as the whole movie design set really. In the music video the environments fade and so they do in this movie to. The hacker in the movie also wears a hoodie, so stereotype for a hackers "image". So this movie doesn't deliver something new in the design department, but since i happen to think the references to the design are great, so is this movie. The designs are interesting and beautiful, but not new. Scarlett Johansson plays the lead role as Major. Someone ripped her brain out and placed it inside a robot body. The Major hasn't much memory of the past, so Major lives in the present. Major is a expensive machine, just like Robocop, out fighting for the Japanese government with the help of a private company named Hanka Robotics. This brain in a robot body is just as the Borg queen in the Star Trek Next Generation series, the Borg queen has her spine still though. But just as the Borg queen has access to the Hive, so does the Major, the Major can talk "telepathically" with the team(with the help of technology of course). Either anime was first, or this movie has a lot of references to Star Trek. However, even though Star Trek also takes up the ethical surrounding the Borg hive and individuality, so does this "Ghost in a shell", but still this movie doesn't feel as the "Borg", it has the feel of "Irobot", but since the Major is a human, Major doesn't phase the same issue of not being considered human. Major is the next step in evolution of humanity. So what is the story really? Well, some earlier reviews said the story is shallow, but I happen to disagree. It is about finding out what really matters for you and what you could do for your beliefs when you do. So with that said, this is a sci-fi movie, that isn't boring in any way. It has a artistic feel to it and in the end we get to know the Major just a little bit more, enough to want more episodes of this film, even without action and murder. Just to explore the cyber human, that most likely will be possible, due to the more artificial stuff we invent. So is this the future? Cyber humans? With body parts of technology? So are the new threat the hackers in this universe? Those that can hack into the cyber humans technology? What happens to free will, if your mind is hacked? I think this movie addresses some of the fears hidden inside the development of cyber humans. The Major has no privacy, since all her thoughts can be read. So is this a possible further step for mankind? Are we gonna be connected to hives, in a neural network? This movie doesn't tell us what it would be like. This movie seems to be pro for cyber humans. It seems to be anti-hackers, but at the same time glorifies and demonizes them. Major has a special walking style through the film, so it doesn't come off as a human body in fully. I think Scarlet does it well. I actually like this film and in the genre of sci-fi I would like to give the movie a strong grade. This movie might disappoint anime watchers, since it didn't feel anime to me in the designs. It is a very Japanese movie, with feelings of Japanese designs all over it. I wasn't bored at any time and time flew fast. There is no sex in this film, so if you like love scenes you are going to be disappointed.
Lion (2016)
One interesting journey and a true story
A little boy stays behind to sleep at the train station, while his older brother goes off to night shift. When he wakes up all alone he starts wondering around, looking for his brother, finds a safe place in a empty train. There he falls a sleep and when he wakes up the train is moving. He's locked in for a few days, in a totally empty train wagon. How does he survive? One day he arrives at Calcutta, a city with 15 million people. They speak another language, Bengali and he speaks Hindi. He is five years old, all alone in a big city, not being able to communicate with a majority of the residents, far away from home. How will he manage there? How will he find food, who can he trust? Can he get help to get back home? The audience is taken on a little boy's journey and we get to see how he handles life, all alone. He is a smart little resourceful boy and he manages in this dangerous place. Many dangers lure around the corners and we are kept on the edge, since we do not know if good or bad will come from every experience. There are bad people in this film, as well as good people. The name of a person that handles adoptions and investigations is very much like a real person that I know. First I thought it could be her, but I didn't know. I later on got confirmation the character portrayd was her. My world shrunk. The story is based on a true story, a real boy's adoption history and his search for his biological family. Every year children in India go missing. Some are abducted, other's perhaps have been in accidents, others have wondered away, just like this boy. There are many stories out there, this is just one of them. The movie really shows us the life in Calcutta and India. It has a real feel to it and the people are believable. The main character, played by Dev Patel, does it with good acting. I think he surely makes the audience feel the agony and the despair of this persons faith. The movie seems to have caught the feeling of agony, despair, as well as hope and love. So will he find his birth place, or is he forever lost? For that you have to go on a journey with tears, joy, exploration and new experiences. To know, you have to go on a journey with this boy and see yet another interesting journey and faith of a person. The movie really keeps you in the characters feelings, you feel all up and downs and so on. Perhaps you might even learn a thing or two. This movie is a good entertaining drama.
Hundraettåringen som smet från notan och försvann (2016)
A strange 101 year old takes us on an adventure
We get to once more see Robert in the lead role, this time the old man has turned 101-years-old. The story starts at a luxury resort in some exotic place. In storage they find some old beverage in the old man's stuff. They share the beverage and it's the best beverage ever invented. Of course there is a very strange story behind this beverage and how it came to exist. After they have the only soda, the other's want more of it, but the old man doesn't have the formula, he believes it is in Berlin. He says it's said that he has the formula, he thinks it might be in Berlin, so of course they set off to Berlin in a haste. They skip the hotel's invoice at the hotel by luring their way through it all, as always. This starts a hilarious journey with three bad guys that don't care about the rules. They smuggle apes and so on. We also get a lesson in how the cold war works in an allegory of soda. You will understand when you see the film. They make fiction out of history, which is a good way to not upset either Russians or Americans, but still give a pretty good view of how the cold war worked. This old man is really a bad guy, he does whatever, plays both sides so to speak, he is neutral, he works with Swedes, Russians and Americans as a spy. That also makes him connected all over the world. It is a very funny movie and me and my friend laughed all the way through the whole movie. I think it is overall a funny movie. They talk Russian, Swedish, English and who knows what else? I happen to think it was worth seeing. You get to see different places and cultures.
