Be Cool (2005)
You'll enjoy it because the cast did
When you look at the average score and then at mine you'll probably think I din't know what I'm talking about, but just hear me out. First off, this is by no means a serious movie, and anyone expecting a serious movie will definitely be disappointed. That being said, this movie is hilarious. I have no doubts that on paper it seemed like a bad idea, but all the actors have so much fun with it and really bring the quirkiness of their characters to life. Its also great to see guys like The Rock and Andre 3000 have, as other people have noted, real comedy potential and can make you laugh in every scene they're in. I was also pleasantly surprised by Vaughn- this is the only role I can recall in which he doesn't seem asleep or just plain bored in every scene. The best part about this movie is the willing, and funny, self-deprecation of guys such as Steven Tyler, as well as the clever jabs at Hollywood and the recording industry. The WMDs certainly bring to mind a certain rap-group out there today. No, this movie won't make you laugh all the way through it, but watch it with a bunch of friends and I guarantee you will not regret it.
The Fairytaler (2003)
Kids will love it
This series did the rounds on ABC Kids once about 2 months, before being relegated to a less popular Saturday Morning slot for repeats. Whilst it isn't as funny as other modern day adaptations such as 'Martin Morning' or 'Once Upon A Time', it should still prove popular for kids who love a good story and aren't too fussed about quality voice-work or believable plots. The animation and sound is simple yet effective, and the characters very clear-cut with good morals and values.
Overall, a clear return to Hans Christian Andersens traditional fairy tales, with the only bells and whistles being in the surprisingly good intro before each episode. This short section is actually quite meaningful (I should know I studied it for English) and should offer some parents a bit of insight into how their kids view the world, sometimes on a much deeper level than the parents, and always on a more fun one. Certainly not groundbreaking stuff, but worth a watch if you get the chance.
The Interview (1998)
some great Aussie talent on showcase
the Aussie film industry has had a rough run, with more s(t)inkers than swimmers and barely any recognition from overseas, so its great to see a truly good Australian film with local talent every now and then. the interview basically takes the traditional style of interrogation and 'stickin it to the man' and turns it on its head, providing us with a tense plot fully realised by excellent script writing and solid performances. there are no real standouts, and though some may say weaving (as suspected car-thief Fleming) is scarily good, we have come to expect this from him. the suspense is never overdone and the characters all believable, the storyline intriguing, and there are solid performances all round. the film techniques are also notably good, and the noir tone of the film very effectively realised. the final scene is especially powerful, and may challenge many viewers perception of the pants-wettingly pathetic Fleming. overall, see it for the story, see it for the acting, see it for the filming, or even just see it to support us Aussies giving it a go.
