The Event (2010)
Brilliant plot
Since I started watching Lost, about 4 years ago or so (the first season was only available two years later on public Brazilian TV), I questioned myself about what would be the TV series' path after its end. When I first saw the TV series which would premiere last year, I found two of which would might replace Lost: V and Flashforward (I was also watching Fringe, by J.J. Abrams, that premiered in 2008). After watching some episodes of Flashforward, I loved it and thought it would be the perfect substitute for Lost. That was not what happened: Flashforward got cancelled some episodes later. V was disappointing for me at the first watch: I did not like the first episode, thus did not stick with it for too long. Having not checked the TV series that would premiere after Lost, I found myself on a Monday afternoon seeing a headline on a Brazilian news website: "Acclaimed as 'Lost' substitute, 'The Event' will premiere today on Universal Channel". This was last week. Although I could not watch the premiere of it that Monday, I watched their reprise the day before yesterday (friday), and became mesmerized. The plot is absolutely well-written, and even though you might struggle to catch up on the first episode, the second one will give a shed light on the plot. Now, most of "The Event" starts to become unpuzzled. Definitely it is worth watching, and I'm seriously going for it.
2012 (2009)
Plot's sucked. Effects hasn't.
Well, yes, this is a bit worth watching (because of the effects, I must say). Since the tickets aren't expensive, it's not a loss. When I came into the cinema, I had an expectation that the movie would talk more about the 2012 Maya prediction, than any other thing. This wasn't what happened. The movie barely talks about the prediction. You can't make a comparison between the Maya prophecy and the movie, except for the year it occurs. I was a bit disappointed, because I thought it was going to be a fiction movie, but based on true facts. For my sadness, it wasn't. They could call this movie "The Day After Tomorrow: 2 - the remake".
Despite of visual and good effects (that's why I gave 6 out of 10), the history is totally nonsense, is totally waste of time and has nothing to do with the Maya prediction, as I've said before. I was hoping this movie could be the best one, maybe for this decade. A shame it wasn't. Had everything to be a success, and failed, badly.
Now talking about the plot, totally disposable. In the first minutes, I really enjoyed in, specially in India, when they've discovered that the world would ruin. As of this moment, the writers got lost in the plot, trying to juggle a sci-fi and a family story, always having the American "dad superhero" that does everything in the right way, saving the world. Fortunately we still had a few nice things that make you think, such as in the end, when everybody move to Africa. When would someone move to Africa nowadays? It's shown that we may need them in the future, and this was well done. The rest of the plot sucked, unfortunately.
Even though that sucked, I can't say the same about the effects. This was the best part of the movie for sure. When the White House fell down, it was the beginning of a new era. When California was swallowed by the ocean, you could see the world changing. And at least, it had substance. That was happening because of San Andreas Fault; a shame they didn't mix everything they showed in the movie with Maya prediction, that was unused in the movie.
6/10. Not the best movie I've seen so far. Seems media is exaggerating again -- talking about the expectations about the movie.
O Que é Isso, Companheiro? (1997)
Probably the best Brazilian movie I've ever seen
"Four Days In September" is a brilliant and well-written movie. The year is 1969, and Brazilians are suffering with lack of democracy - that happens because of a dictatorship, which took place in 1964, when a militar junta overthrew João Goulart, the president of Brazil. In 1968, a Non-constitutional act was approved by the government, called Ato Incostitucional 5 (AI5), and by the day this was approved, the press started to be censored, and Brazilian people lost their freedom of speech. The movie starts showing three friends, and two of them decided to protest (and fight using weapons) against the dictatorship. When they've joined MR8 (Movimento Revolucionário 8 de outubro), a communist group against the government, Fernando Gabeira, currently a deputy in Brazil, had the idea to kidnap the American ambassador in Brazil, Charles Burke Elbrick, becoming one of the most famous points in the fight against the dictatorship. This is a must see movie if you really want to know more information about the Brazilian history. The acting is also good, also featuring Alan Arkin (brilliant performance), and Fisher Stevens (who acted as Chuck Fishman in "Early Edition", one of my favorite TV series of all times). Great and must see movie. A masterpiece from Brazilian cinema.
The Devil's Mercy (2008)
This movie is really boring and ridiculous
This movie really sucks. I do not know how a person could call it a thriller. The history is ridiculous. You can only find a little piece of thriller on the final parts. This movie has 1 hour and 30 minutes. At 1:10, I thought I was really watching the wrong movie. There was no fear. There was no thriller history. When I saw the last scene, I laughed a lot. It was really ridiculous how this movie ends -- starts... and you know, everything. I won't recommend this trash to anyone. It's a really trash-triller from Hollywood suburbs. I cannot believe a person who liked this movie. It's kinda boring. I've never seen those actors and actresses before. This movie is a big joke.
Captain Mike Across America (2007)
Great movie
Michael Moore is a genius. This movie's amazing. Unfortunately USA have had problems with Bush administration these 8 years, and I really like Americans like Michael, smart. He really woke up and he is trying to wake up all the Americans. Also, I don't know how this grade could be so bad, maybe because there's a lot of republicans here. Michael knows how to put together in a movie information and comedy. The part that he's praying with republicans, and your answers ("and I think that someone has stolen their sense of humor" - about the Republicans who tried to take him to the tribunals) to them are really amazing. Hope that Michael make more movies like it.
