Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Useless and UNNECESSARY 3+ hour movie...
This movie keeps getting prolonged because these creatures keep putting themselves in danger... like every few minutes. After being put in danger, the next few minutes shows them putting themselves right back into more danger. WTF?!?!! That's what I kept noticing and then getting annoyed about this movie.
Not only that, but the protagonist that supposedly is all big and bad is actually weak and a chump! He had so many chances to get Jake Sully, but he chickened out.
I gave this movie some stars because of the details and clarity that made the movie look good, but the story is just bad. They're just trying to make multiple series of this movie, and I get how they needed to make something for part 2, but the time it took to finally make one after all these years and then have it turn out like this was bad on the writers.
Stranger Things (2016)
Closure is what I expected, but annoyance is what I kept feeling
The first time I saw ST was after season 3 came out, and I saw seasons 1-3 three times in a row in two weeks. That's how much I enjoyed the show. Maybe it's because it's been so long and I expected so much out of this since the Duffer brothers had so much more time to make it worthwhile that season 4 ended up disappointing me the first time around (watched it twice). I hope that part 2 will save it and change my opinions because there's not enough really connecting the show (spoiler - I'm referring to how Hopper and Joyce weren't even a part of what's going on in Hawkins). It felt like the story was just dragged out with the attempt of making it more of a horror movie and over-the-line gory scenes.
If you're a fan of this show, you must have already watched it and are looking for opinions that match what you just saw. Closure is what I expected since the main characters are getting old at this point, but I kept getting annoyed. Watching it the 2nd time wasn't as bad, though...
Ready for my complaints? Ready to dislike my review? Here it comes...
Hopper - practically the main person who everyone wanted to see after the big explosion at the end of season 3. We saw from the trailers he's alive, but OMFG, all 7 of the episodes showed him still effing with the damn russians. I'm hoping that part 2 will explain the purpose of wasting our time watching him hit the same damn nail on the railroad for every episode.
Joyce/Murray - perhaps a great female actor in other movies but has been annoying since season 1 and COMPLETELY useless in season 4 until those 5 seconds in the 7th episode when she helped open the door for Hopper to escape. I'm glad Murray brought in some comic relief on this rescue mission, but other than that, Joyce was useless for 7 episodes.
Eddie - he did such a good job playing his role. He's my favorite character in this season.
Jason - typical tool/dbag in the show, and I thought he also did a good job of playing this character, attempting to avenge his girlfriend's death, while becoming the typical hypocritical christian who spits out bible verses to justify his cause to harm and take down kids in his way.
Finn - I rooted for him and El in season 1 and 2. I don't know if Finn was told to act that way of a typical teenager, but he sucked at his little fight with El in the house before she was arrested. His way of explaining that he still 'loves' her left me questioning why Will didn't just get with her that entire time they lived together. Finn's screen time doesn't show that he deserves her.
El - I literally CHEERED and APPLAUDED for that dumb blonde to get busted in the face because I felt bad for what she did to El (and maybe because I find satisfaction in paybacks...), but they dragged out her time getting back her powers. I get that it was to introduce the villain, but they shouldn't have taken 3 entire episodes do it. Her time with the other weirdos in the room was a bit too much.
Max - I liked how she was used as one of the damsels in distress, and I was relieved to see how her friends saved her. I almost thought the show was going to be just about her (you know how like season 2 was about Will constantly touching the back of his neck because of his experience in the upside down? I thought it would be similar for Max because of what happened to her brother.)
Steve and Nancy (and Jonathan) - I was fine with Nancy falling for Steve (maybe because Jonathan looks older and much more of a slob with every subsequent season and maybe because the show made me like Steve more), but it was just bad storytelling of not showing enough why Nancy and Jonathan's relationship fell apart except from the fact there were far apart from each other. That's pretty much it was... I guess we, the fans, are supposed to just accept that...?
Robin - she played her role well
Dustin/Lucas - they played their typical roles and helped out
Will - I guess they just had to keep him in the show?
Argyle - somewhat comedic, but I found him overly loud and annoying. He and Steve are also slow when it comes people yelling them to drive or get of the road. That seems to be a theme with drivers this season.
Brenner - did they even explain how he survived season 1? We saw how quickly and ferociously the demogorgon moved this season, so hopefully this will be answered soon -- I just don't want them to take several episodes to explain this... please!
Bel-Air (2022)
I wanna like this show...
You'll start out disliking Will's character, but then you start to feel for him. However, they make Carlton such a tool, and I can't but just get annoyed by this short git every time I see his face. It's fine to change up the characters, but this guy alone just makes you hate the show.
Ni wei xiao shi hen mei (2021)
I thought they were playing of League of Legends!!
Preface:
Before I begin, I'll preface this with some background information I had going into the show. I started playing Dota 1, which is a multiplayer online battle arena (moba) game similar to the game played in this show, back in 2002, and then I moved onto Dota 2 when it was first released. There were some other moba games in between, such as League of Legends (LoL) and Heroes of Newerth (HoN), but the first tournament I saw was Dota 2 around 2011, so watching this show was very nostalgic to me. In the first episode, I thought the Tong Yao (main actress) was playing League of Legends. Apparently, the game in this show is a copy of it. I thought it was for legal reasons, but this is actually a real game (that started out as a mobile game). Other than that, this show focuses more on how a team's relationship grows while relating it to moba gaming, and that's what got me hooked.
My review:
This show portrays a group of gamers coming together and building relationships that could typically happen in real life. For those who don't know what the gaming world has evolved into nowadays, people who take games seriously will join others and live in the same house to practice their skills as a team (of course, there are some other teams/clans/friends/etc. That just move in together for pure entertainment). You get to see what it's like for players to come together, practice and fight for a championship, have their quarrels, sympathize with the characters' past and current dilemmas, and all the other typical occurrences in a drama.
You also will see how the beginning journey for e-sport players isn't easy. Society, such as China in this case, shows us how parents expect their children to study and be obedient to what they think is best for them or what is the norm, and you get to see what several of the characters had to go through to get to where they are.
I personally thought there was a lot humor in each episode, much of them were the cute-type of jokes. Tong Yao and Lu Sicheng (main characters) have a nice chemistry with each other that didn't make me dislike them at any point of the show. Usually with dramas, there's always someone who comes in the picture and makes me hate them and then like them back again, but I'm soooo glad that this show kept me enjoying every episode. I liked how sometimes they always had this expression of either being mad or worried, but I really liked it when you see them smile. I also was definitely pleased how they both handled people of the opposite sex.
The other team members in the house were also great. You'll really enjoy how well they push along the show. One member is introverted and cold but becomes welcoming, another is funny and likeable from the start, another is oblivious and innocent, another is childish but supportive. The coach is mature and helpful. The manager is very nice and funny in his own way. They were all great, and I didn't see them doing anything that made me hate them at all.
After getting halfway through the series, I was motivated to hop back onto Dota 2, and I realized that they could have talked more about skills, items, detailed strategies, etc. To let the viewers understand what was going on. However, I think the route they chose was good and easy enough for nongamers to understand and follow along. There was enough nostalgia for me to recall the call-outs and game jargon, such as 'adc', 'ganking', 'jungling', 'ultimate', 'skills need to be refreshed', etc. That made me appreciate the incorporation, while not getting too technical for people who've never played moba games to still enjoy this show.
Nit-Picks (just in case you thought I was just biased towards this movie, I did wish there was some changes, but the series overall was so good that this list doesn't even make me want to bring down my rating):
- Some of the dialogues were so quick, and some of the subtitles give you one second to read long sentences.
- The audio recording was not done professionally (or the producers simply did not like the actors'/actresses' voices). About half of the scripts seem like they had to be rerecorded, so it looked like they were dubbing themselves, lol.
- I dislike how they showed the first kiss scene. I also don't like how just about every kissing scene seemed quite uncomfortable for the girl.
- They only show how the ZDGX team always starts in the bottom left corner (except for the first episode), but in moba games, you could start from the upper right side as well. I guess the writers/directors thought that it would be easier for regular reviews to follow. However, they keep switching the colors of the teams during the fight scenes, so you really have to look closely who is on the green team or the red team.
- They always show how the team(s) win by going through the middle lane, even though there is a top and bottom lane that you can push.
- It's pretty difficult for someone who's never played or watched any moba games to know everything that's going on when they're playing. For most of the gameplays, I had to keep pausing and watch frame by frame because to know what was happening.
- They could have done a better job by identifying the players of the animations. Since I never played this game, I had no clue who was playing who in the beginning, but by the 3rd animation, I was able to follow along. Even then, it's not easy to follow along.
- I'm not sure if it's common occurrence in China, but I thought it was annoying to see that when players/managers get in trouble for petty things, they can lose 1-3 months of salary!!!
