Ad Astra (2019)
Spectacular- Brad Pitt at his BEST
I've seen a lot of hate for this in the reviews. I understand this is probably just not what people expected when they think of sci-fi, but that doesn't mean it can't be a great film. As I've said, Bard Pitt is in one of his best roles to date and delivers the best performance of the year SO FAR. The movie is slow, tense, emotional, and tragic. If you liked Ryan Gosling in First Man (2018) and Blade Runner 2049 then you will love this. Pitt's character is quiet and hesitant, but so, so alone. I don't know what it is about space films but they seem to handle loneliness better than most. My point is that it's not a blockbuster and it's not trying to be. Its just a story about a lonely man "looking forward to the day my solitude ends". It's beyond words, and I think that's its strength.
Leave No Trace (2018)
A beautiful work of art
I was skeptical when i read the plot summary as I had thought it could be just another oscar bait captain fantastic type of movie. I was VERY wrong. If you arent patient, this movie may move a bit too slowly for your liking, but it delivers. The film is only building up to its ending, one that left me heartbroken in tears. I haven't been moved this much by a film in a long time, probably not since "Garden of Words" or "Arrival". Ben Foster plays his character with such melancholy and stoicism, hardened by whatever war trauma he has suffered. The beauty in his performance as well as the film itself elevates it from a great movie to a masterpiece. This film is the best movie I have seen this year, and I'm confident it will stay that way.
Alex Strangelove (2018)
Really mediocre
Its got a nice premise and an honest attempt but its been done before. Everything about it was extremely predictable and the script was really boring. The direction itself was well done and it had a kind atmosphere but the whole thing was really unremarkable.
