Explained (2018)
Insightful and encourages me to learn more about things I didn't even know I cared about
I stumbled across this docuseries in Netlifx trying to find something interesting to watch. I didn't really feel like I was in the mood for watching documentaries, I was really hoping to stumble across a new comedy series that was actually funny. But nevertheless I decided that it was worth watching this over something I've already seen a million times. I found myself watching episode after episode. I found myself being interested in topic after topic that I never thought it possible for me to be interested in, such as biology and economics. Each episode contained enough information to inform me of the basics around the topic and the conversations that experts were having in that field, but didn't drone on about the same point or the same piece of information. Many crime documentaries that I've watched often go over one small piece of information over and over again that I just become bored so easily, even though criminology (the study of crime) is a big passion of mine, and one of the university degrees that I'm studying. But this series doesn't drone on about the same piece of information and only elaborates on a point if it's super important to the overall topic.
Many people who have written reviews for this series complain that it forms an agenda, or that it takes on leftist arguments as fact, basically that it's quite subjective and biased. If you are looking through these reviews and deciding whether or not to watch this series, please don't listen to those who say that it is biased. Please watch it yourself an form your own opinion about whether the show is biased, whether you agree with certain subjects raised in the series and whether you think each topic is interesting or important enough to be discussed.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Nothing beats a good marvel movie, and this is definitely a good marvel movie
From the beginning of the movie I was excited. There has never been an independent marvel film featuring a single heroine, especially with the abilities that Carol has. So you can tell I was excited from the get go.
The entire movie felt just as empowering as the trailer was. There were plenty of moments featuring blatant sexism in the Air Force towards Carol and her friend but they just fought through it and tried to defy expectations. Made me smile.
Not only was this movie empowering but it was also super awesome. The CGI was amazing and the dialogue was hilarious when it could be and serious when it needed to be. Anyone who says that the movie wasn't funny obviously has no sense of humour. (I mean when that cat turned out to be some alien thing and Fury freaked out, that absolutely hilarious).
The sheer power of Captain Marvel is truly expressed in the last 30 minutes. At first you're thinking that it's pretty overplayed in the trailer but then you see this scene and you see just how much they downplayed it. It was honestly amazing watching her fight.
This movie was criticised so much before it actually came out because it was feminist propaganda and created for SJWs but these people honestly don't understand how much of an impact this kind of movie has on someone like me who feels unimportant and useless as a woman and a person. It was honestly inspiring, because even though it's fictional, it still shows that girls can be the heroes to. Which is honestly so important.
I gave this movie a 10/10 not only because of how it made me feel and how amazing the CGI and acting was, but also because I know it had the same impact on others watching me. As soon as the credits started rolling, basically everyone in the cinema started clapping which I have never seen happen, ever. There were whistles and claps from everywhere because people genuinely enjoyed this movie. No matter how much people tried to sabotage it because it was supposed to be feminist propaganda, it was still an amazing film.
