Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter One - The Halloween Apocalypse (2021)
Absolute bilge
Too many threads, no story, no cohesion, no emotion. Just keep throwing new bits at a wall, to see what sticks. With no central narrative it just became very dull. John Bishop is not an actor and was poor. Yes it will all cohere later but it was just too much.
Landscapers (2021)
Atrocious, inappropriate and dumb
The tone of this is all wrong, the structure overly complex and the acting over the top. Olivia Coleman does her usual thing with no attempt at a local accent. The added comedy and surreal elements are misplaced and misfire. The Nottinghamshire people are portrayed as wacky or dim. This does an injustice to those killed, to Nottinghamshire and to an interesting story worth telling well.
Tenet (2020)
Unenjoyable bilge
Terrible sound, awful plot, clichés everywhere, self-indulgent. No emotional connection at all. Time loop plot done far better and simpler in such as Arrival. Don't fall for the hype, this is just a bad film all round. Let's stop with these empty blockbusters, overly complex structures and tell some stories.
Inside No. 9: How Do You Plead? (2021)
Enjoyable enough
This episode is okay and is made well, but the set-up is revealed early rather than hinted at and the payoff overbaked. Another that in the moment is okay, if underwhelming but feels a bit daft afterwards.
Inside No. 9: Hurry Up and Wait (2021)
Lots of build for not much payoff
An okay episode with a great performance by Steve Pemberton. Overall though far less than the sum of its parts. The build up is good but the twist felt a bit forced, prompting a shrug as it had little setup. Adrian Dunbar's inclusion was fun but ultimately unnecessary to the story.
I was also uncomfortable in the treatment of mental illness and the child's disappearance in this episode too. These aspects merit some care but the treatment lacked compassion, the people in the episode lacking context and were just plot devices. It left a lingering sour taste especially with the contrasting humour alongside it.
The ending too if you consider it works in the moment but does not make sense after that.
Inside No. 9: Simon Says (2021)
Okay, a bit obvious
Better than episode 1 but just okay. Obvious twists and highly implausible scenario. Also lacked anyone at all to empathise with by the end, so hard to care. Could do with the new contemporary references calming down.
Inside No. 9: Wuthering Heist (2021)
Self referential, meta tripe
Instead of what works best in IN9 this is all the cleverness, film, TV and drama references overloaded into one episode. I've been with the team since start of LoG and like later Gattis works, this is just too many ideas all at once instead of a coherent story. I just didn't find it entertaining or ultimately that memorable.
