Population Zero (2016)
Hack Job on a Fake Documentary
A hipster doofus director/actor steals an original idea by the writer of a novel called "Free Fire."
When you lie to an audience you lose trust. This is wholly different than an unreliable narrator deployed by a master writer. If you're using the genres non-fiction, documentary, based on a true story, you stick to that or else label fiction-which would actually challenge an artist to try to play on audience expectations in a more genuine way.
No credit given to the essay by a legal expert who first posited the loophole thought experiment. What goes around, comes around and one day this premise might actually get picked up by much better talent.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Garbage with Lipstick
An aimless melodrama about a common grifter who likes pretty dresses, Inventing Anna never really convinces you the petty crimes of this high society wannabe is really worth retelling.
But-- it is okay if you're in the mood for a good hate-watch! Along, the way you can subject yourself to Garner's (as Anna) frigid affect and bizarre German/Russian accent misfire as well as Chlumski (as the journalist) making ugly faces and dead-set on making people believe journalism (especially her kind of drivel) is some kind of higher calling, above, even, her own baby and doting, dumb-faced husband.
The show's creator (Shonda or something) has no idea on what this story is supposed to be about beyond the 3-minute read the real story of this abhorrent woman actually was. An absurdly incoherent story that overreaches and even manages to, somehow, disparage Russian immigrants.
Hellier (2019)
A Laughable Put-on
Only thing going for this show is its excellent post-production, lighting, presentation, sound -this has to be recognized. However, hearing the strange dark-haired goth girl utter "weird" & "like... like... weird" will blunt your senses. The team is obsessed with coincidences (look up pareidolia!) and a dubious method (the so called Estes Method) involving putting a blindfold and spitting out whatever words come to mind. It's too bad, because I wanted so much to like them (they're in Colorado, but sound midwestern with that valley girl intonation so common among millennials).
It's a put-on -the whole show! Or they are incredibly gullible. Believe it or not there really are scientifically minded researchers of the paranormal out there (look up paranexus on podcasts or at paranexus.org or MUFON) -this really sets the perceptions of earnest researchers back!
Also, the only thing weird is these strange, disorganized group intruding upon good rural folks whom they find weird -hey, guys, you're the only alien and weird things in those areas not the other way around.
What they do could be called "Laughable Synchronicity-based Non-Research"
The group has such dubious methods to authenticate sources, information, leads that they might as well just present the lore and be done with it. They use people like a felon, at one point, whose lack of coherence and doubtful motives to share this information make everything she says completely without any credibility whatsoever.
Black Fly (2014)
Relentless
Masterful in concept, acting, execution. You cannot look away. This is a high caliber movie in every way, every shot, every nuance -far more than meets the eye. I am amazed by what I saw. Perfect delivery in every scene.
