2012 (2009)
Visual Effects 5, Science 0
As is expected with a Hollywood Production the science was absolutely awful, but the special effects were spectacular. The screenplay was so corny I feel like a goose that was force-fed corn to make Foie gras.
There were so many attempts to force drama it was annoying. I mean, how many close escapes can the heroes of a movie have before the law of averages catches up with them? It seemed like everything that Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) did, was almost too late. It seemed like he was late for the whole movie with fire, brimstone, water and other objects hot at his heels. A few close calls adds drama - but this was ridiculous!
It seemed unnecessary to kill off Tamara (Beatrice Rosen) - I guess the body count wasn't high enough already...What's a few billion without knocking off a cute blonde.
10.5: Apocalypse (2006)
Even the camera work was corny!!!!
This film was one of the most corny, clichéd and hackneyed films I have ever seen. Even the camera work was corny - for dramatic scenes they continuously zoomed in and out on faces like a parody. The problem was, they were serious. The director responsible for those corny zooms should be exiled somewhere far, far away.
The science was absolutely awful. The concept that anything man-made could influence a tectonic event was unbelievable. I won't even mention that fact that events usually taking millions of years could suddenly occur within days! To have a fault open from Hudson's Bay to the Gulf of Mexico not only displays a total ignorance of science but strains incredulity beyond the breaking point.
The dramatic scenes were actually embarrassing to watch. I have seen people witness real disasters who didn't react as badly as the actors in this film. Beau Bridges should be ashamed for appearing in this film. I could go on, but suffice to say that all those involved in this films should be drummed out of SAG, DGA, DGC, ACTRA and any other film related association! But that is just my humble opinion.
Thank you.
The Wicker Man (2006)
Not so bad....
First of all, to Murraydeschot of the Netherlands - the island was off of the coast of Washington State, which is also consistent with the cult's trek to the west! Try not to compare remakes with the original as they are inevitably panned as they are not exactly the same!
Overall, I found the film OK. I haven't seen the original British version, so I can't compare them. The plan (or plot) as it was stated, required quite a few coincidental events. If Edward had reacted differently, things wouldn't have worked out....
- He never left a message with anyone about where he was going. - He could have rented a boat to get to the island. - When he went to rescue (or so he thought) Rowan, he never checked his weapon and was surprised when it didn't fire! - There was fishing gear -- including lobster traps -- on the dock. There was probably a boat around somewhere. Once he realised how weird everything was, he should have looked for a boat to get off the island and find help.
It would have been interesting if they had explored the cult a bit more and it's connection to Salem to flesh out the story. The self-proclaimed pagans who commented on this film shouldn't fear as I do not believe anyone would seriously believe they are burning people in giant wicker structures.
I preferred the alternate ending where you get to see his legs broken. The way the mallet crunched those femurs was cringe worthy. Although, I'm pretty sure he would have lost consciousness from bleeding out in his thighs from the fractures!
