The In-Laws (2003)
Better than some remakes
Hollywood is littered with bad remakes of great films. One wonders why studios even bother. The original with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin is one of the funniest films ever made. On the other hand this updated version lacks in so many ways. Albert brooks and Michael Douglas do have good chemistry but he script is not up to the challenge of reviving this classic. The first half of the movie is pretty good, slowly but surely goes downhill. There are some good moments but they are few and far between during the last half of the movie. The ending is just plain stupid. Too bad, it could have been a contender. Im glad I saw this on television instead of spending money at a movie theater. Otherwise I would be writing a more negative review.
Vers le sud (2005)
Very Real Characters
I really don't understand those who find this movie boring or disappointing. The main characters come across as very real. All had needs to be met. The three were able to meet those needs because they had the money to do it. They journey to Haiti as sex tourist seeking out young men to fulfill their desires for orgasms, love and affection. It's really no different than men who go places like Thailand and other such places where sex can be had for a few dollars by those who live in unimaginable poverty. The film also deals with the disdain that the people who live in Haiti have for the sex tourist.
The film is well cast. Charlotte Rampling, Karen Young, and Louise Portal well portray the desperation for affection sought by them. Louise Portal as Legba and Lys Ambroise as Albert are excellent as the other side of this perverted fantasy.
Highly recommended.
Les belles Américaines (1990)
Annoying say's it all
I guess this was supposed to be a romantic comedy or perhaps a bedroom farce. But what it's just is a cast of the most annoying characters I can ever recall. Top of the list is Lara Flynn Boyle. She is simply a screeching and spoiled brat. She whines and screeches through the first 15 minutes of the movie about going to Paris with her mother on fashion buying trip. As it turns out both mom and daughter are looking to have affairs on their respective significant others. But my oh my their luggage is lost at the airport that contain their birth control. Unbeknownst to each other they both end up having an affair with the smarmy French doctor who gives them fresh birth control prescriptions. What a hoot, huh? There is never an explanation as to why they want to have affairs. The script makes out that they are happy with their partners. So it goes with other events in the movie. In one scene Laura Flynn Boyles boyfriend swims nude and parades himself in front of Joanna Cassidy. She doesn't seem to mind but to be honest the boyfriend has a serious case of George Constanza "shrinkage" after getting out of the pool.
There are more lame cliché's in this movie than you can shake a stick at. There is a lot of bedroom farce. You know; mother and daughter just missing each other and bad times. Then there is the all-knowing concierge and whimsical bellhop at the hotel.
Really just a movie about self-indulgent people and it isn't pretty.
U-571 (2000)
Repeat to yourself: It's only a movie, It's only...
Oh sure the movie is full of made up history. But then again most war movies are like that, even ones that purport to be factual. I think a little tweaking with the title and script would make a difference in the way this movie is viewed. I do understand that some people are sensitive to the historical inaccuracy of how the Enigma machine was obtained. Perhaps if the script centered on something else it wouldn't disturb so many people. It really is a great action/war movie. The movie is somewhat predictable but has enough twist and turns in it to be entertaining. Das Boot its not but it is a good submarine tale. Like Das Boot you get that claustrophobic feel of a submarines and the shear terror of being depth charged. The character development was also pretty good. It was interesting to see the sailor's carry out orders that they felt would probably kill them. The characters were all very human. I just think this is a better movie than the many here who have given it such a poor review.
King Kong (2005)
A Mighty Kong...But A Too Long Kong
Like many, I counted the days until King Kong's opening. I was certain Peter Jackson would do justice to this great classic. Jack Black and Naomi Watts are perfectly cast. What could go wrong? Well almost nothing. Almost. The three-hour runtime almost destroyed the beast.
It is a shame that this otherwise stellar production should be weighed down by poor judgment in the editing room. Reviews from preview showings made mention of the excessive length of the movie. Some thought it was the ego of Peter Jackson that made the movie so long. It's a rare movie that deserves to be three hours long. King Kong was not one of them. King Kong could of easily done away with 45 minutes and in no way affect the story.
1. The ponderous relationship between the first mate and the cabin boy. While they were interesting characters, the 15 to 20 minutes dealing with their story added nothing to the movie. It really slowed down the pace of the movie.
2. One of my favorite scenes in both King Kong's is when Kong shakes everyone off of the log bridge. They did it up right in this one. Except that it just NEVER quits. I thought it was cool the way the people fell through the maze of vines and landed in a pit of various insects. But it was really overdone. 10 minutes could have been cut out of that scene. Yeah, I get it
there's a bunch of large insects down here.
3. I really liked the way Ann was introduced. But once again, the segment was a bit too long. Though it did give a better picture of her situation than the original.
But all in all King Kong is a great movie. This King Kong really benefits from excellent special effects. Peter Jackson has remained faithful to the original King Kong. I just wish he had used better judgment in the editing room.
