Hollow (I) (2011)

5.5? In a scale of 1 to 100 maybe
2 February 2022
This was bad. Not a poor man's Blair Witch, more likely a destitute homeless living in a soggy cardboard box man's Blair Witch Part 2. Let's see, poor acting, awful plot, annoying as hell jumping around camera work (yes, I know all Found Footage movies are like this but this one's worse), almost all filming is in the dark si you can't see jack and finally, so much aimless screaming and running around. Did I say this was bad? I lied, it's much worse than bad. Don't watch it. You'll thank me! Oh, lastly, it's far from scary, just very annoying.

The Mule (2018)
9/10
Entertaining emotional drama.
2 January 2019
Many reviews on here compare The Mule to El Camino (an understandable comparison in some ways), others complain about Clint's politics (which I also disagree with) & some say that it was boring & little happened. I say that I could care less about Clint's politics & if I were looking for an exciting, action packed movie, I would not have chosen to see this movie as it was clearly not going to be thrilling & nonstop action. The Mule is a slow paced entertaining drama about a man who has made choices in his life that put his family second & his regrets as he has aged. The drug cartel aspect of this movie was, to me, more of a sidebar of the real story; a man's search for personal redemption & a second chance. I was moved by The Mule, felt the acting was very good & it is well worth your 2 hours. Well done, Clint!

A Quiet Place (2018)

A Quiet Horror Masterpiece
14 April 2018
A Quiet Place hooked me from the beginning & kept me there through the ending. The best word to describe this movie is: tense. The quietness of the whole movie made you focus on what you were watching, the characters were well developed, acting was great, music was perfect, directing & editing concise, script was too the point without any needless filler. The creatures were pretty cool & original. We saw enough of them to see how they functioned but not so much they became silly. Complaints? Sure, too many unanswered questions since we never saw where the creatures came from & how the onslaught first started but...that's ok. Don't ask too many questions & you'll be hooked all the way through. I loved it!

Peter Rabbit (2018)
7/10
a good mixed bag of movie fun
25 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
OK, let's get this clear, first & foremost, this is a kids movie & most kids, especially 10 & under, will like it. My 5 year old girl loved it as did most kids at the theater today. Most adults there seemed to enjoy it enough as well as most people were laughing throughout. Myself? I was a tad surprised at some of the humor...the old man dying during his fight w/Peter, (mush to Peter's delight), the other man having a potentially serious medical issue while the rabbits loved it. It was also very predictable but still, I had to mostly like it. Younger kids will not get much of the humor, older kids & many adults may be bored but it was still overall, a likable movie, fun & somewhat humorous. It's a kids movie people, lighten up...it is what it is.

The Wailing (2016)
2/10
The title says it all
16 March 2017
Yes, the title does say it all...endless wailing, wailing & more wailing! Like many posters on here, I also read the mostly positive reviews & had high hopes for The Wailing but I really didn't like it. I thought the acting was very poor (including the child. I honestly do not see why so many people thought she was a good actor, all she did was scream, wail, cry & wail some more...& I don't think she did any of those particularly well.) The main character was a terrible actor. I thought it was hilarious how inept & pathetic all the cops were. Someone is attacking one of their friends, what do they do? Basically nothing, of course, except wail, fall down & run away.

I didn't like any of the characters, not a one. I guess most of all, I wasn't even remotely scared at any time in this movie. In my mind, the #1 reason for watching a horror movie is to be scared. Based on that alone, I give this a 2. I would've given it a 1 but I did like the cinematography. Oh, did I mention, there was lots of wailing??

An OK horror flick for horror lovers
23 January 2017
If you like horror flicks in general & do not have huge aspirations of seeing a Silence of the Lambs or Halloween or even The Ring or Strangers, you will probably enjoy The Bye Bye Man. It's worth watching though not very memorable as nothing really makes it stand out from the run of the mill horror flicks.

The story: 3 college kids move into an off campus house & quickly discover a night stand with a cryptic verse written over & over, "Don't think it, don't say it". Yes, of course, we all know right away what it is they can't think or say, it's "The Bye Bye Man". Say that & you're history! Sounds like The Candy Man, right?? Or kinda like The Ring (if you watch it you will die). Not only will you die if you say it but anyone who heard you say it is also a dead man or lady. Nothing new here. I must say the acting cold have been better but overall, I still liked it. Then again, I like most horror flicks more than most do so take my opinion for what it is.

Split (IX) (2016)

Great thriller
23 January 2017
M. Night is alive & kicking & has come out with a tense thriller with just a tad of horror added for good measure. James McAvoy was amazing playing a man, Kevin with 23 different personalities who kidnaps 3 young ladies & keeps them locked up. Most of his personalities appear to be harmless. One personality, Hedwig, is funny as hell & I was amazed at how effortlessly McAvoy transitioned from a funny 9 year old to a gay designed to a menacing control freak & was totally believable as every personality he portrayed.

Hayley Lu Richardson was great as one of the kidnapped girls & I especially loved the flashbacks showing her character as a small girl. Betty Buckley was terrific as Kevin's psychiatrist & her interactions with several of Kevin's personalities were well written & helped to clarify who was who in Kevin's mind.

Without giving too much away, the tension builds to a crescendo when we find out that there is a possible 24th personality emerging in Kevin which brings the horror aspect of this film up front & center.

The ending is satisfying with a cool final scene with a totally different but very well known actor showing up. I loved it! M. Night comes back with a very satisfying thriller which I highly recommend. James McAvoy was 100% amazing!

Moana (I) (2016)
9/10
Great movie for kids!
26 November 2016
Saw this with my wife, 3 year-old daughter & mother-in-law & we all loved it. The packed theater of mostly kids & parents seemed to love it & gave it a good round of applause at the end! It is what it is people...a Disney Princess movie with some good laughs, great songs & an overall good family time. For those who didn't like it, I'm not sure what you were expecting with an animated Disney Princess flick. My wife & I were singing the music the rest of the day. Moana had (for what its worth)likely the best song ever sung by The Rock, and he didn't sound half bad. Ms. Cravalho, as Moana, was excellent & has a beautiful voice...move over Elsa & Anna, make room for Moana! The animation was gorgeous, the writing was cute & amusing, the plot was entertaining enough, it's hard to find much to complain about. I'd give it a 10 except it wasn't scary enough for me as I love scares but hey, it was a Disney Princess movie for gosh sake! :)

Run, Joe, Run (1974–1975)
8/10
Loved RJR!
5 July 2009
I loved Run Joe Run! It's a little hard to remember all the details but I remember always rooting for Joe's owner to catch Joe so he could clear Joe's name & be reunified again. Alas, it never happened & we never even got a closing final episode to tie up the loose ends and...no spin off or movies were ever made. Poor Joe is still running wild out there, with many villains out to get him with his only real friend searching in vain! Come Home Joe, Come Home! :)

OK, I need to write more lines before I can submit so...I think Joe was written during the sad story line days of the mid 70's. There were so many tearjerking songs written then...remember "Wild Fire" (horse), "Shannon" (dog), "Seasons in the Sun" (guy dying), "Rocky" (girl dying), "Judy Mae" (boy's dad dying after finding his new wife & son in bed!)...I know there were many more songs about dying during that time. I wonder why? Musta been all the drugs from the 60's!

Seven Pounds (2008)

A marvelous & haunting trip!
12 April 2009
I've read many very negative reviews about this movie and don't understand what's to dislike. Too many people dissect & scrutinize movies and expect them to make complete sense all the time. Well, life isn't that simple!

I thought the story line was interesting, touching & kept me wanting more. The acting was terrific & Will was very sensitive & mysterious. Overall it was a very sweet, sad yet uplifting drama about how we deal with the mistakes we make in life & can we make a difference. I also loved the soundtrack which featured many great songs I'd never heard before. I downloaded them right away!

The Strangers (2008)
8/10
Simple and scary
26 July 2008
OK...I admit, I love horror flicks, even bad ones. The Strangers is not a bad one, actually I thought it was very good. Very little blood & guts but who needs it? It scared the bejeebers outta my daughter (she's 16) and it made me jump a few times. Movies with fairly simple plots usually make the best scary ones and The Strangers was that...simple and scary. I've read some criticisms of this movie on here and didn't think they were totally justified, afterall, who expects the actors in horror films to behave rationally and sensibly?? Who cares if there are too many holes in the script?? It's a horror flick for goodness sake, not "War and Peace"!

The Strangers is definitely worth watching for everyone who loves suspense and a few honest scares! It's up there with the original "Halloween". I could've done without the somewhat clichéd ending but it was still, over all, a fun & creepy ride!

Oscars? I hope not!
15 January 2007
Good movie, excellent singing, decent acting (for the most part) but Oscar winning? I doubt that, except for the music/score/etc, which are all very worthy of Oscars. If this wins many other Oscars, particularly for any of the major acting awards, I'd be quite surprised and would say it was a pretty poor year for acting! OK, I need 10 lines on here so what else can I say? Eddie was great! Jennifer sang wonderfully and her acting was much better than could have been expected!

I'm sure it was discussed on here already but why did a movie about a certain era and aspect of the music industry (containing several songs in the 1st 1/3 of the film but not REALLY a "musical") suddenly turn into a "musical" about 1/3 of the way into the movie? I thought that was unusual.

The Fountain (2006)
3/10
"The Fountain" is too confusing!
28 November 2006
Everyone has a right to their opinions of course but for the life of me, I can't understand all the enthusiastic reviews this movie has received on here. I love sci-fi adventures, enjoy a good romance and don't mind having to actually use my brain to help figure out the twists and turns of a good movie but...."The Fountain" was way "too far out there" for me!

First the good news: "The Fountain" is a romance, sci-fi and action/adventure movie all rolled into one! Now the bad news: "The Fountain" doesn't do any of these very well. More good news: the cinematography (A+), costumes (B+) and acting (B) are all pretty good and deserve high grades. Unfortunately, I thought the biggest drawback of this movie was, very simply, the screenplay (D). It was way too confusing for me, my date (and we are actually rather intelligent people!) and it seemed, most of the viewing audience. When the movie ended, we all seemed to look at each other with a confused look on our face, shrug our shoulders and say "What the heck was that about?"

I followed the general gist of the plot...(without giving away too much info)... Man searches for The Fountain of Youth throughout time and space to try to preserve his and his love's life. OK, easy enough but was the whole story really happening or was it only his reading of his wife's novel? And as I was debating this in my mind I realized one important thing...that I didn't really care. The story never grabbed me, sucked me into its characters and into its life. It never made me care.

And the final straw for me and my sweety was this...what the heck was with "Hugh-Jackman-in-the-future" floating in that stupid bubble?? I kept hoping it would burst and put an end to this weird movie that in the initial 15 minutes had burst for me. Ugh...stay home, rent "Somewhere in Time" and make some popcorn!
