Sputnik (2020)
FINALLY! An original sci-fi horror 😱
Sputnik is one of the most original sci-fi horror films I have seen in a very long time, where the story didn't just boil down to a human versus alien gun fight. This film showcased exceptional character development, realistic CGI (even better than some of the modern Hollywood films), and gave enough of a glimpse of Soviet ruled Russia for a foreign audience to both understand and enjoy.
This film wasn't half-assed in designing its extraterrestrial organism. It was well thought out and scientific, and its means of sustenance is very original. It's also refreshing to watch a film that doesn't rely on over-exposition. The characters are both convincing and relatable, their emotions carefully conveyed by the actors who did extraordinarily well.
One of the reviews unfairly criticized this film for borrowing ideas from popular Hollywood sci-fis, because at this point, most ideas from films are borrowed from another. There is only a number of possible angles that an alien sci-fi can take, and despite that, Sputnik still managed to show some originality.
8 stars and 8 thumbs up! (^_^)
Me Before You (2016)
Only OK
Movie was OK. There was nothing unexpected from this fairly standard plot. And although I didn't necessarily dislike Emilia Clarke in her role, her facial expressions were way too exaggerated. I mean, what's with the incessant eyebrow raising? It was actually distracting!
But good acting and casting in general. And beautiful scenery shots.
The Ones Below (2015)
Great build up to a great disappointment...
I'm a big fan of cult classics such as Rosemary's Baby so when I saw the trailer to this movie, I was intrigued.
The first third of the movie was quite well done; the mood was creepy and weird as intended, the actors were marvelous; the suspense really drew me in and I wanted to find out how this movie would pan out.
Then it got reeeeeally slow. It dragged on and the repetitiveness made it very hard to push through. Midway through, the mystery of the plot has already become quite obvious and predictable as it has been constantly spelled out to us over and over again. So by the end, the only way to save this movie is for an unexpected twist instead of the predictable ending. But no twist. Just a creepy, linear story with ok acting.
Bridget Jones's Baby (2016)
Absolutely HI-LA-RI-OUS
The only flaw in this movie... none. Superb writing - not a dull moment. Also a very smooth transition from the last Bridget Jones movie.
The story line is quite original in that it didn't feature the cliché, predictable plot of a good guy vs. bad guy. There doesn't always have to be a villain bad guy in every romcom so it's pretty refreshing.
There were certain moments in this movie that brought back memories from the earlier films, creating a pleasant sense of nostalgia.
I also appreciate the undertone in this movie in highlighting the many struggles and issues that modern women face. It is both relatable and relevant.
Brilliant performances from all actors, not just in comedic value but also romantically. The chemistry is convincing and the actors were able to deliver their emotions so perfectly that you'll be drawn to empathise with their characters.
Very pleased to see that they've still got the funnies up their sleeves for their third installment after such a long time gap!
