Gojira vs. Supesugojira (1994)
My least favourit movie of the heisei era
I'll cut right to the chase I don't like space Godzilla considering the monster of a monster movie is rather important it's a rather big blow against it. I kind of like the way he looks kind of like if Godzilla had a mega evolution. But he's also one of the least original monsters in the series, Godzilla from spaaaaccccee. His name is a bit too stupid to take seriously and this is coming from someone who watched the entire showa era. His backstory is just so dumb, it's and I paraphrase, "either Mothra or Biolante, left a G-cell in space, which fell into a black hole came out a white hole, landed on alien crystalline life forms and then grew hyper fast by absorbing the power of exploding stars." What the sig hell? Again I watched the showa movies so don't say well it's a "Godzilla movie what were you expecting?" I can deal with silly it's when you say something like that and then expect me to take you seriously. It's kind of a problem with Heisei era in general Showa had the good sense too leave their monsters origins vague most of the time well Heisei felt the need to explain things with bizarre pseudo science. The other major problem with space Godzilla is how little is done with the concept he is a mixture of Godzilla, his brother so to speak and the fist and only alien life forms of the Heisei era. Nothing is done with either, he's neither a reflection or foil to Godzilla and nothing is done with their connection. In the final battle between the Godzilla's more focus is put on freaking Mogera, then them. He could easily be a totally different monster perhaps named Crystilax, and nothing would change, hell he could be freaking Gigan working for a group of crystalline life forms and nothing would change, which raises the question of why even make him an evil(or maybe eviler), Godzilla? His motives are also vague which is usually fine as monsters can usually be assumed to be territorial and vicious but he seems specifically spiteful and malicious and I have basically no idea why he's any more malicous then Godzilla. I guess alien equals evil. Then you have the throw away line about how he's a sign of the evils of polluting space even though humans had next to nothing to do with his creation and it was a total fluke.
Okay enough ranting about space Godzilla the truth is everything else is pretty good, well okay the human characters Yuki a crazy yet strangely likable G-force member obsessed with killing Godzilla by shooting him in the armpit, naturally he's fun to watch, and Miki is good I guess even if she went straight from being willing to kill Godzilla albeit reluctantly to being pissed at everyone who wants to do the same, she's also sort of on board with turning him into a puppet in this movie which is kind of worse, so I'm not really sure what moral high horse she thinks she's riding on. Theirs's definitely a push to make Godzilla more sympathetic but he's killed so many freaking people at this point, and even destroys a few building for the crime of being inconviant for him to walk around in this movie so it doesn't really land for me. There's a plot about Yakuza trying to control Godzilla that goes freaking no were. Mogera the next era of anti Kaiju mecha is pretty cool however. All in all it's not a terrible movie but it's not up to the standards of the other Heisei films,
The Breakfast Club (1985)
Overall the breakfast club is a classical movie for a reason and sill holds up well.
One of the greatest ironies of the breakfast club is that well one of the messages is people are so much more then their stereotype, everyone who watches the movie promptly forgets their name and only remember them by their name. They are however timeless stereotypes that are still largely the ones used to day, although if the movie was made today it might include a emo, and maybe hippy stereotypes and they would probably have more ethnic diversity. My favorite part of the movie is when the teacher is having a conversation with the janitor, I like the scene because the man who had spent the entirely of the movie being a huge dictator without the tator to all of the teens chastising them endlessly even going so far as threaten Bender, but in this scene he is humiliated and his ceaseless hate is broken down by the janitor of all people. The scene also ends with a great quote "do you know what bothers me these are the people who are going to look after me when I get old" "I wouldn't count on it". In the end almost all of the elements in this movie are timeless, with all of their themes still existing in high school society. However I don't think that high school society is quite as judgmental or clique-ish in my experience people at high schools are quite welcoming but falling under the basket case stereotype myself I am not really too experienced in high school society. In end well the breakfast club is a great movie but some of the friendships they form are a little quick to happen considering how much they fight at the start.
Brick (2005)
A difrent and refreshing take on a noir film
The Brick is quite like many film noirs as it includes a very cynical protagonist who has some shady dealings, he is also trying to solve a crime in a dark and mysterious setting, finally there is definitely a femfatal or two. However, unlike other more classic film noirs it takes place in or close to the present and as opposed to fallowing a hardened criminal or a private detective, it fallows an angry albeit intelligent high school student, with most of the other characters being teenagers too. As such the film is classified as a neo noir film. This style gives it all the charm of most noir films with a new back drop. This is a large part of the reason why I found the movie so enjoyable. The movie like many great noir films leaves you jumping at shadow and confused Intel the end. Although the film can often be a little confusing do to the unusual dialog and terminology of the film but this does add something to the mystery and some thing to the atmosphere of the film so in the end it can be forgiven for them. So if your looking for a good noir film that has something new then this is the film for you.
The Great Gatsby (2013)
A Elegent and deap movie.
The great Gatsby is a visually stunning and colorful film with a touch of many different themes. The theme of eyes through out the movie represents the eyes of god, ever judging the actions of the world and ignored by the world forgetting their god-fearing responsibility and their commandments that once bound society. With their illegal drinking, immoral affairs and back handed dealing. The eyes also represent how much is left unseen by people at the surface level. This theme relates to the opening line of the film were nick says that he has began to only see people's evils no longer fooled by the outer image that people project. The characters Daisy and tom Buchannan as representatives of the old wealth. Well there are many themes in the movie I don't believe their to be any set moral to the story. There are several locations through out the movie such as the desolate valley of ash often associated with Tom Buchanan's mistress in the form of a dirty almost revolting slum, other sets include the buccans and Gatsby's mansions that serve as signs of their extravagance Gatsby's represents this as well as his desire to be with daisy, another set is the humble abode of Nick Caraway which serves as contrast to the other locations. The great Gatsby in question is a man that brings a flourish and flavour to the movie with his elegant and cool swagger although he is also shown to be flawed and looses the love of his life because he is to forceful and in his attempts to woo her he drives her away. All in all, the movie contains a lot of depth colour and their just some thing cool about it its worth a look at.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
good for film students but bad for almost every one else.
I understand that their is supposedly a lot of brilliance to this movie, but most of it is about as exiting as watching paint dry. I will admit that their are some parts of that are very good, but by the time I got to them I was so bored out of my mind by hours absolutely nothing. It has little to no characters or continuity of any kind so it is very hard to get invested in it. in the end the movie fails the most basic principle of movies actually being entertaining or leaving any sort of positive impact. Even without the tiny pieces of actually riveting scenes their are tones of books, movies, single episodes of a show and even video games witch address their unfocused points much better well actually containing plot and thing that might make you even some what invested. I get their is something to this movie I just don't get, but a boring movie is a boring movie.
Chaplin (1992)
a great bibliography
This film was very informative about Charlie Chaplin's life prior to seeing this movie the only things I knew about Chaplin was that he was involved in old films that may have been comedies (I wasn't sure). As for enjoyment, I think it makes a good drama albeit far from amazing. through the film I learned almost the entirely of his life and as enjoy learning about someone's life I did quite enjoy it. Although if you aren't interested in his life I wouldn't suggest it. The film is however a riveting tale of love, progress and social injustice. All around it is an excellent bibliography that taught me not only about the life of an amazing actor but also about the film industry and the times as a whole. if you are interested in film it is a must see if not than its pretty hit or miss.
Le voyage dans la lune (1902)
a classic but to dated for enjoyment
Voyage to the moon for the time that it was made was considered amazing as it was far a head of other films of the age, with colors and an actual semblance of a story, not to mention other special effects. Due to the fact that it can be considered one of the first true films it is almost required for film classes to see it as it is a historical creation for film, but in all honestly if you are looking for a film for the sake of watching and enjoying it, this film is far to old to hold up to to days standards and I personally didn't enjoy it, its not truly a timeless film as very few people would actually get a kick out of watching it today, but it will be forever remembered and watched for academic purposes. Thought these things are to be expected from the times.
