Together (2021)
One-two year early
While the movie tries to unveil some stupidity that was going on since 2020, still it can't deliver some strong message other than crash course into "exponential". The wound is still fresh, and making controversial statements would easily get people cancelled in this crazy world we happened to live in now.
But how great it would be if one of them turned out to be a so called "conspiracy theorists", you know, those people who dare to remind everyone about 98% survival rate or those who were spreading "theories" about vaccines becoming mandatory even before they became mandatory?
However, the wound is still fresh. Such a movie would only be possible a year or two from now. Later, when we leave all the masks, lockdowns and vaccine passports behind (hopefully), or maybe when they become "the new normal", just like shoes removal at the airports.
As for the movie itself and its two main characters, the development is antsy and sometimes it's hard to understand their actions. But I guess that's the way of demonstrating us so called lockdown fatigue. The actors do well and emotions are felt real, it's just that the whole premise is rather silly and the way of introducing spectators into this stage is awkward as well. Most of the time you have this strange feeling of when it's time to go from a family or friends dinner since they start to talk to each other about own problems, but still they address you from time to time to ask your opinion so you just sit and listen to all this nonsense.
Babylon A.D. (2008)
Babylol
I didn't know what to say after "Babylon" ended. Hysterical female world-saviour was more eatable in "Fifth Element", and those idea of saving mankind with child-bearing was developed in more interesting way if "Children of Men" (Holy Bible is even more interesting lol). But now we have just full-length trash, it's some incredible mix of absurdity. Now let's check out the menu. Girlie-cyborg with fireproof hairs, lady-Jedi (without lightsaber however, though she does know kung-fu), parkour in some dirty backgrounds of Vladivostok (town I live in, BTW), fascist submarine in Zolotoy Rog harbor, bunnies for 5 roubles, crying Vin Diesel, Depardieu as some indistinct freak, and even more indistinct main Good and Evil factions.
In red corner we have some strange corporation - its leader does some cosmetic procedures and reeeally want something, but you can't figure out what it is. And in blue corner there's genius inventor - he wants something other than that corporation (but you can't figure out that exact either), that's why he's wearing all that stuff around his neck. Well, the plot gives us some closest steps of bad guys - they really need that new-born Leeloo with all her offspring to force people to buy more coca-cola zero (if you see Logic somewhere, just say her to come see the script-writer). There could be some other stuff to buy of course, but I noticed only one brand repeating through the film. And as for the good guys - their way is that simple - they're just set up to gum up, not to allow those people buy some cola! Oh, there's Vin Diesel by the way. I'm used to his heroes already - you know, those bad guys who develop then to good guys in the end. All those muscles are just hiding something what will make you cry in tender. I haven't seen all his films, but "Pitch Black" and "Chronicles of Riddick" were built upon that idea for sure. And I believe that he should keep on playing such kind of guys - he found his gold mine. But that softness of his hero should be risen up, it should be warmed up with love or watered with tears. It should have some billions on the account if there's no other way to stimulate. But if that softness comes out of nothing, you just stunned: "E-e-e, so what?" I saw this line completed in "Pitch Black", I was disappointed with blurred ending of "Chronicles", but now I saw just nothing. Complete zero. I saw endless and hopeless vacuum around Toorop, so I wasn't able to get his motivations.
Main girl doesn't worth a word. Just some furniture. But every time I winked, I opened my eyes and saw shining spirit of Milla Jovovich.
And you'll have to wink very often lol. I believe that "Babylon" has some great fighting scenes ('hot action' is one of 2* reasons for me to put 6/10), but most of times I couldn't understand who is punching, who is kicking, who is winning at last. Cameraman gets complete Fail for that shivering crap, his parents are to be at school tomorrow, and somebody please present him "Cloverfield" for Christmas - boy really needs some lessons of "handy-cam".
* Another reason is my private obsession - I just love those post-nuke atmosphere)
