Cats (2019)
I prefer to watch my cats puke
It's a bit like watching a trailer of a video game, made in the old Unreal engine and played back on an old computer. I can't believe that someone could get absolutely everything wrong in a single movie. Messy and chaotic camera movement, really bad CGI, editing, colour correction, lighting. Terrible story that doesn't really go anywhere. A musical but with absolutely terrible music. Not funny slapstick jokes.
And what is with these characters, awkward people with no genitals in spandex. Can't stop thinking about those guys who get on a cheap flight to Majorca wearing a penis costume.
Is this movie meant for children (why would anyone else even want to watch it)? So then why everyone is so ugly, angry and unpleasant? The general feeling this movie leaves behind is frustration and confusion. Whoever is responsible for making it so awful should seek professional help and stop making movies.
The Andromeda Strain (1971)
If Kraftwerk made sci-fi movies...
I'm absolutely blown away by how good this movie is, being over 50 years old. The atmosphere of suspense, mystery and a cold war conspiracy plus 70's acting resembles the Space Odyssey but is set in a secret lab environment. Even though it's not modern acting, it manages to create credible characters. The book the movie is based on is also a really good scientific story. The flow of the movie is well balanced and very precisely executed. Amazing futuristic interiors look like properly built with stainless steel, not cardboard like in some other movies. Decent effects, considering the time. Super cool opening sequence and soundtrack. If Kraftwerk made movies, it would probably be the one.
Blame! (2017)
Solid sci-fi, visually stunning and good story.
I suppose after the gigantic Netflix logo spins around on the screen, announcing yet another copycat production, the expectations drop considerably. Fortunately but it seems (I didn't bother to check) like Netflix just signed the cheque to purchase the title, I doubt they could have much to do with this movie. Firstly, it's anime made by the Japanese in Japanese language and everything about it is Japanese, it feels way more genuine than Appleseed. The story was excellent and the visuals were absolutely stunning, I think that's why I'm giving it 7 stars. Otherwise it wasn't a masterpiece but still very solid and enjoyable. The characters were a little bit flat, for example they don't seem to be bothered much when dozens of men and children get ripped to shreds or lose limbs, they all mostly stare at the camera with their fakely large eyes. But well, it's mostly an action anime, so there isn't much time to develop any depth. So yes, there is a lot of shooting, running, action but the balance is right - there is also a lot of suspense, story, sci-fi, dreamy cityscapes, exoskeletons, cyborgs, monsters and heroes. However, it's far away from the American superhero movies with happy ending, the overall mood is gloomy, post apocalyptic and the ending is more of a "walk into the mist" rather than "drive into the sunset" which I personally like.
Nocturnal Animals (2016)
Stabbing you in the heart and twisting the knife until the last scene
A very beautiful and a very evil movie at the same time. Gripping and disturbing from the first moment, until the last scene. It's beautifully shot, stylish and well acted which is not so common these days. It's a very violent movie but despite the fact it's quite realistic and gritty at times, it still makes the viewer feel slightly detached, it has this melancholic feel of Lynch movies. Beautifully sarcastic and exposing the lowest human instincts in a very cinematic manner. The last scene just wins the movie for me. Just watch it!
The Neon Demon (2016)
The majority is wrong.
It's mostly the bad reviews that encouraged me to express my opinion. It's very common that good movies get 1/10 ratings mixed with 10/10 ratings and it was exactly the case this time. I'm actually quite baffled by the low ratings, but then all it means it's not a movie for everyone and some people should just rent Spiderman 6 and enjoy it with their popcorn. This is by far one of the best movies I've ever seen, and on many levels. First of all, it looks really good, photography is absolutely breathtaking. The story line is twisted, sexy and surreal, not patronising and moralising like many people would like it to be. I would call it a modern take on what David Lynch was doing many years ago, a refreshed Jim Jarmush, with a touch of minimalist Korean photography. Enough said, just watch it. You won't be wasting your time.
